Longest Distance On A Mileage Sign?
« on: April 10, 2011, 02:16:49 AM »

This is probably the farthest distance on a mileage sign that I've seen personally.

Is not there one for Cove Fort, UT on I-70 in Maryland at its begining?
Does not US 50 have one for Scaramento in Ocean City, MD and one for Ocean City in Sacramento.  See US Ends.com for photos.

But those are novelty signs, whereas this one is legitimate.

There was one on westbound I-80 between Park City and Salt Lake that listed Reno, 551 miles away. I don't think that mileage sign still stands though...

I have probably driven by that sign a million times.  I always wondered why they sign Salt Lake City in the California desert.  Especially in Baker.

I heard there was one for Los Angeles in New Mexico on I-40 westbound that was for over 1,000 miles.

I think it is gone.  The distance was 1034 miles, if I recall correctly.

Actually this is the longest distance I've seen on a mileage sign now that I think about it. But, its not an "official" mileage sign though.

I know I've posted this one in a similar thread before.  The largest "legitimate" number I've seen is along the Alaska Highway south/east of Whitehorse:

Of course, this is in kilometers, so it figures to around 660 miles.

I just happen to have one right here. The number is 1,007 miles. This is, I believe, from spring 1983. Apologies for the crappy quality -- it's from a Polaroid SX70 print; I played with the sharpening a bit to make the sign more readable.

very nice!  I wish I had grabbed a photo of that sign in Jan '05 when it was still there.  I looked for it in Sept '06 and by then it was gone.

even the distance to Flagstaff is impressive!  :-D

Longest on any freeway in Canada is Kilometre 828 on Highway 401 at the Ontario/Quebec border. In Quebec Highway 401 becomes Autoroute 20.

The last exit number is 825.

I think the highest exit number on an Interstate is 880 in Texas on I-10. Could there be a US Hwy higher?

What does the top line say? I can tell it's Albuquerque but I can't read the mileage. I remember seeing the sign too but I couldn't remember exactly where it was.

216 miles.  the sign was near San Jon.

that sign looks like it is button copy.  In any case, it seems to have a non-reflective background.  I remember one with a reflective background in 2005; looks to have been a direct replacement.

If it was button copy, then it must have been a one-off because NM swore off button copy in the mid-1950's.  The first Interstate signs in NM used Scotchlite for foreground elements.

I-70 used to have, and may still have, a sign near Topeka giving the distance to Denver as 560 miles.

this being New Mexico, just because they swore off something doesn't mean they don't use it on occasion!  :-D

This is the longest I can remember seeing in QC that isn't in a ridiculously remote area: Toronto, 510.

http://maps.google.ca/?ie=UTF8&ll=45.389152,-73.978317&spn=0,0.016544&z=16&layer=c&cbll=45.389294,-73.977867&panoid=onjFejvYmBuk17D3mffxBA&cbp=12,264.26,,2,3.21

If you do want a ridiculously remote one, there's this sign at the entrance of the James Bay Road. I think it's interesting as there's almost strictly nothing along this road, except those destinations. Those are NOT major/touristic destinations, strictly speaking.

on that road there is a stretch of 381km without services.  Basically, there's a gas station partway through (the other stretch is only 240km), but I don't remember if it's 1/3 of the way, or 2/3.

there is a sign that says "next services 381km".
