After reading this wikipedia article on Extradosed bridges (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extradosed_bridge) I decided to create a thread about it.

One new extradosed bridge being built

What bridges do you think should be replaced with an extradosed spans?
I would love to see the Sherran Minton bridge replaced with that but that type of bridge probably isn't neccasarry for the Ohio River on I-64/US 150.
Only two things are infinite in this world, stupidity, and I-75 construction

The Sherman Minton bridge is beautiful as is.

I would like to see the Poplar Street Bridge in St Louis replaced with one.

The only reason I wanted the Sherman Minton Bridge to be replaced with an Extradosed bridge was because the bridge is in poor structural condition (60% I believe. Also the bridge might be in need of a redeck) and also the bridge has no shoulders but I don't think it is underbuilt. It just needs shoulders.

The Poplar Street Bridge would reap a huge benefit if it is replaced with one. The current bridge is absolutely ugly. It has zero shoulder space. And it also probably suffers from congestion and could have its structural condition degrade over time if it isn't replaced.
A new bridge could have much better aesthetics as well as have full shoulder space and expirence less congestion. It could be built with a Local-Express lane configuration similar to the modern Woodrow Wilson bridge so that thru traffic could avoid congestion right off the east side of the bridge in East Saint Louis. The thru traffic on express lanes could also bypass congestion on the west side of the bridge at downtown. The bridge could be financed with either tolls on the express lanes if those lanes are implemented (Highly unlikely) or have a toll on the bridge itself AT LEAST on the westbound lanes. The tolling if used would be AET. Also there is the Design-Build-Finance method if IDOT wants to try it out.

bugo

There's so little difference between these bridges and cable stayed bridges that only an engineer would care. Yawn.

47/100 in 2012 for the Sherman Minton. Functionally obsolete but in otherwise decent shape. In the ballpark for a bridge of its age.

The nearby JFK bridge is 66/100

The I24 bridge is 71.7/100

Poplar Street is 73.3/100 despite the crappy layout.

I expect that bridge to last a long time, since it "works" and a new span would require major changes to the area around it.
