Driving your state's perimeter

I see plenty of posts about clinching certain highways or roads, but I haven't yet seen anything about clinching a state's perimeter. To me, this would mean driving all of a state's highways that are closest to, and parallel to each of the state's borders. I would only include state, US, and Interstate highways, as I think trying to drive the closest back road would be far too complicated. I would also keep from crossing state lines. In some instances, certain stretches of highways would be missed, as there is no way to get to them without crossing a state line.

Now I wanted to trace my home state of Wisconsin's route on Google Maps to get a distance of what this drive would be, but I couldn't get it to cooperate without wanting to constantly take me over a shorter route or skipping some sections, or even doubling back on an interstate when I tried typing in intersection to intersection directions. If anyone has tips on how to do that, it would be appreciated. Anyway, here is the route that would be the perimeter drive of Wisconsin:

Starting in the southwest corner of the state at the WI 11 and US 61/151 interchange,
WI 11 East to WI 81 near Brodhead,
WI 81 East to I-43 in Beloit,
I-43 North to WI 140 near Clinton,
WI 140 South to WI 67,
WI 67 East/North to WI 50,
WI 50 East to I-41/94 in Kenosha,
I-41/94 South to WI 165 in Kenosha,
WI 165 East to WI 32 in Kenosha,
WI 32 North to WI 794/I-794 in St. Francis,
WI 794/I-794 North to WI 32 in Milwaukee,
WI 32 North to I-43/WI 32/57 in Bayside,
I-43/WI 32/57 North to WI 32 in Port Washington,
WI 32 N to I-43,
I-43 North to WI 28 in Sheboygan,
WI 28 East to WI 42,
WI 42 North to I-43,
I-43 North to US 151 in Manitowoc,
US 151 North to US 10,
US 10 West to WI 42,
WI 42 North to WI 57,
WI 42/57 North to WI 57,
WI 57 North to WI 42 North,
turning around at the end of WI 42 in Door County back south,
WI 42 South to WI 42/57,
WI 42/57 South to WI 57,
WI 57 South to I-43 in Green Bay,
I-43 North to US 41/141 in Green Bay,

This is the best I could come up with for Oregon. I took a few liberties ragarding the state route rules, but not many. For example, the connection between OR-86 and ID-71 is not entirely a state route, and there's a few county routes near Walla Walla, though you could just as easily stick to OR-11 and US-12 or avoid the crossing and use OR-37. The routing is not entirely perfect, as Google wouldn't let me continue changing the route anymore (I guess there's a limit to that :D). But it's a good general idea of what it would look like.

And yeah, it crosses into California twice (once just at the state line though), Nevada once, Idaho twice, and Washington once. US-199, NV-140, and the Jordan Valley to Homedale part of US-95 are practically unavoidable, though the other crossings you could work around I would say. In my opinion it's better to cross a line to make a better perimeter. Otherwise you'd have to use stuff like OR-42 and route from Lakeview to Burns to Ontario, which is nowhere remotely near the border.

(Sorry for the large image, hopefully that's okay.  Mods if you need to change it to a link or something go ahead.)

Google Maps Link (can't promise you it will open correctly)

I can't even imagine how you could do Idaho, though maybe I'll give it a shot sometime.

To get Google to route right, you'll have to drag the route to set points to modify the directions.  There are only so many allowed, so they have to be broken up.  And sometimes, there just isn't a way to get it right, since Google can be stubborn sometimes.

Fprget about Alaska. Almost all of the perimeter is roadless, and some of it is glaciated.  Best you can do is AK 1 from Homer to the east end of Knik Arm near Palmer.

Hawaii is kind of possible, except for two major islands not open to the public (Niihau and Kahoolawe) and one where the only state highway starts at one coast and ends at another but otherwise doesn't follow the coast (Lanai). Plus, you'd have to do some island-hopping among the five others, with only slow barges to take your car (but not you) between islands so you'd be best off with multiple car rentals.

Kauai:  for a three-quarter loop, HI 560 to HI 56, then HI 51 and HI 58 to Lihue's harbor, then HI 50 to HI 540 and back on HI 50 to its end. Also take HI 550 to come as close as possible to filling the long gap between HI 50 and HI 560, created by the steep and rugged cliffs of the Na Pali coast .

Oahu:  HI 93 (start at a permanently-closed old road around Kaena Point) to HI 95, then local roads to and from unsigned HI 8940 (Frankin D, Roosevelt Ave.) on the old Barbers Point air station, then over to HI 76, south on HI 76 to its end to hug part of the coast, then back north to HI 7101 and over to HI 99 to get around Pearl Harbor, then HI 92 to its end, then work your way through local streets in Waikiki to Interstate H-1, then east to HI 72, then HI 61 to connect to the long HI 83 loop around the north coast, then HI 930 to get as close as you can to Kaena Point.

Molokai:  HI 450 hugs the southeast coast. The other state highways are too far inland, except the north end of HI 470.

Maui:  HI 32 to HI 36 then HI 360 to Hana to cover most of the north coast (beyond there, only CR 31 more or less follows the east and southeast coasts), then back to Kahului to pick up HI 3400 and HI 340 to the latter's end at CR 340, then back to take HI 30 between Wailuku and the southwest and west coasts, to the other end of CR 340; then back on HI 30 to HI 310 and HI 31 to follow the beaches and resorts on the south Maui coast. That leaves a long gap covered more or less by CR 31, and a shorter one by CR 340.

Big Island:  A lot simpler. HI 11 from Hilo, with an out-and-back on HI 130 (truncated by lava flows), then HI 11 all the way over to Kailua-Kona (with short jogs to the coast on HI 160 and the west stub of HI 190), then HI 19 to HI 270, then back to HI 19 via HI 250 and an out-and-back on HI 240 to return to Hilo. The major gap is along the Puna coast east and southeast of Hilo, some of it covered by the part of CR 137 that hasn't yet been destroyed by lava flows, as well as most of the southern Kau coast, and the Waipio Valley between HI 270 and HI 240.

If you were to stay on state highways, Illinois would look like this (running clockwise):

Eastern border:  IL-1 and US41 (joined by a short jaunt on I-57 and 94)
Southern border:  IL-146, to keep it simple.*
Western border: IL-3, IL-100, IL-96, IL-94, and IL-84.  (Or just follow The Great River Road)
Northern border:  US20, IL-75 and IL-173. (joined by a short jaunt on IL-251)

If you want to complicate it, use IL-145, US45, IL-169, and IL-37 to Cairo before hitting up IL-3

IL 1 is only closest to the IN border south of Beecher.  You could take US 41 to US 12/20 and go west.  You could cheat a little by either using a few blocks of Halsted between 95th/US 12/US 20 and I-57 that isn't technically IL-1, use 87th Street for a U-turn at the I-94 diamond, or cut down Stony Island to I-94.  Otherwise, you'll have to jump over to I-90/94 at I-55, take I-94 east to Sibley/IL 83.  You would then take IL 83 south to its terminus at US 30, then take US 30 west to IL 394.  That will take you directly to IL 1, which would work until US 52.  Take US 52 to Sheldon, then US 24 back to IL 1.

To "simplify":
I-55 south to I-90/94
I-94 east to IL 83
IL 83 south to US 30
US 30 west to IL 394
IL 394 south to IL 1
IL 1 south to US 52
US 52 east to US 24
US 24 west to IL 1

That covers the northern half of the IL/IN border on the IL side.  And yes, that's confusing.  :-D

Revive 755

A more complicated version for Illinois mostly using signed routes (since I spent a while typing this and don't feel like modifying based on recent posts of a similar nature)

* IL 173 from IL 131 to I-39/I-90
* I-39/I-90 from IL 173 to IL 75
* IL 75 from I-39/I-90 to US 20

* IL 92 from IL 84 to IL 192
* IL 192 from IL 92 to IL 94
* IL 94 from IL 192 to IL 164
* IL 164 from IL 94 to US 34
* US 34 from IL 164 to IL 94
(IIRC there is a secret four digit route closer to the river that could be used instead here south of US 34)
* IL 94 to IL 96
* IL 96 to US 24
* US 24 from IL 96 to IL 57
* IL 57 from US 24 to I-172
* I-172 from IL 57 to I-72
* I-72 from I-172 west to IL 106
* IL 106 from I-72 to IL 96

* US 52 from US 24 to IL 1
* IL 1 from US 52 to IL 394
* IL 394 from IL 1 to US 30
* US 30 from IL 394 to IL 83
* IL 83 from US 30 to I-94 at Exit 71
* I-94 from IL 83 to the Stony Island Connector
* Stony Island Connector from I-94 to US 12 - US 20  - the alternatives that would stick with signed routes appear to be a U-turn via I-94 back to US 12-US 20, going all the way back on I-57 to IL 83, then north on I-294 to IL 50, then east on US 12 - US 20; or going up I-94 to I-55 and missing Lake Shore Drive)
* US 12 - US 20 from the Stony Island Connector to US 41
* US 41 from US 12 - US 20 to US 14
(Alternatively one could continue north on Lakeshore Drive and Hollywood Avenue to US 14 instead)
* US 14 from US 41 west to US 41
* US 41 from US 14 to IL 176
* IL 176 from US 41 to IL 131
* IL 131 from IL 176 to IL 137
* IL 137 from IL 176 to end at IL 173

Montana is very difficult due to terrain and the extreme rural nature of the state. I've chosen the routes that stick the closest to the state lines, even though that includes entering into North Dakota, Wyoming, and very briefly into Idaho. I've also stretched a couple US highways by using the unofficial routes through Yellowstone National Park. Finally, there are numerous backroads that would allow for getting closer to the Canadian border, but are not included as they are not designated highways.

Starting at Wibaux (I-94 just west of ND border):

MT 7 south to MT Secondary 323 at Ekalaka
MT Secondary 323 south to US 212 at Alzada
US 212 west to I-90 at Crow Agency

Arizona really can't be done by car since you have the obstruction of Lake Mead, the Colorado River, and the Grand Canyon.  California is essentially also impossible also given the lack of roadways on the Oregon State Line in the Trinity Mountains that would require crossing the state line.  In fact I can't even find a Forest Road that would connect US 199 to Greyback Road which make a full circuit perimeter much more obtainable.  There are some other examples where there is no true road building along the state perimeter but oddly there is usually a 4WD trail or at minimum something that could theory be used be a skilled enough driver.

I take this as doing a circle as close to a state's limit as possible. So in Alaska it would be AK 1 from Palmer to Tok, AK 2 to Fairbanks and AK 3 back to Palmer :bigass:.

BTW, I forgot this specifically asks for a state. Since I don't have a state, I cannot answer, and my previous post that encircled an autonomous community isn't valid. But since I had it done in another forum...
Supporter of the construction of several running gags, including I-366 with a speed limit of 85 mph (137 km/h) and the Hypotenuse.

Please note that I may mention "invalid" FM channels, i.e. ending in an even number or down to 87.5. These are valid in Europe.

You missed using MN-316 from east of Miesville to Hastings instead of US-61. ;-)

Edit: Also, if we want to get really nitty-gritty, MN-123 from Sandstone to Askov is technically closer to the border than MN-23 is through that stretch. :bigass:

Actually yeah, what was I thinking?  I should have included IL394. lol

For forum purposes I generally consider a "state" to be any US state, territory, or DC; Canadian province or territory, or any other first-level national subdivision (ex: Mexican states, the oblasts of Russia and Alanland, etc.).  I guess some people like to get anal about it (such as in the "hello neighbor" state route game), but IMO it fits the spirit of what a "state" is for roadgeek purposes.

Supporter of the construction of several running gags, including I-366 with a speed limit of 85 mph (137 km/h) and the Hypotenuse.

Please note that I may mention "invalid" FM channels, i.e. ending in an even number or down to 87.5. These are valid in Europe.

West Virginia is esentually impossible due to its irregular shape.  Best I could do is:

US 30 W to WV 2
WV 2 S to WV 31 N
WV 31 N to I-77 N
I-77 N to WV 14 S which eventually multiplexes with WV 68
WV 68 S which eventually multiplexes with US 50
US 50 W to WV 892 S
WV 892 S to WV 68 S to WV 2
WV 2 S to US 60
US 60 W to I-64
I-64 W to US 52
US 52 S to WV 49 (US 52, multiplexed with US 119, Corridor G, enters Kentucky twice for less than 100 yards each)
WV 49 to WV 65
WV 65 N to US 52
US 52 S to WV 80
WV 80 S to WV 83
WV 83 E to WV 16
WV 16  S to WV 161
WV 161 N to US 52
US 52 S to US 460

(all this is highly technical.  US 30 - WV 2 - US 60 - US 52 is probably good enough)

US 460 E to WV 112
WV 112 E to US 219  (enters Virginia for one and one half mile alternate is 50 miles out of the way)
US 219 N to WV 3
WV 3 E to WV 311 (enters Virginia for about 7 mile, alternative would be US 219 to I-64 E)
WV 311 to I-64
I-64 W to WV 92
WV 92 N eventually multiplexes with WV 28  and then with US 250  to US 33
US 33 E  to US 220
US 220 N to US 50
US 50 W to WV 29
WV 29 to WV 9
WV 9 (WV 9 is the only state numbered road that enters the eastern panhandle and no other road is dirveable without leaving the state, so WV 9 to US 340, US 340 N to a parking lot in Harpers Ferry, turn around on US 340 S to WV 230)
WV 230 N to WV 45
WV 45 W to WV 9
WV 9 W (backtracking)  to WV 29 (backtracking)
WV 29 to US 50 W
US 50 W to US 220
US 220 N to WV 46
WV 46  W enters Maryland as MD 135 and 36, alternative is US50 to WV 42 to 48)
WV 46 to WV 42
WV 42  S to US 48
US 48 W to US 219
US 219 to WV 24
WV 24 N to US 50
US 50 W to WV 72
WV 72 N to WV 26
WV 26 to I-68
I-68 W to US 119
US 119 N to US 19
US 19 N to WV 7
WV 7 W to US 250
US 250 N to WV 88
WV 88 to US 250
US 250 N to WV 88
WV 88 N to WV 27
WV 27 W to WV 2
WV 2 N (backtracking) to US 22
US22 E to WV 105
WV 105 to WV 2
WV 2 (backtracking} to WV 8
WV 8 N to US 30
US 30 W to WV 2
