Quote from: Evan_Th on April 17, 2024, 12:56:06 PMThe old Business 40 (current US 421) in Winston-Salem, NC, is called Salem Parkway.

And this street name is most unusual, having been selected in a 2016 contest by NCDOT District 9 requesting suggestions for renaming the freeway.  Thirteen (13) supposedly independent individuals suggested the name "Salem Parkway", and the runner-up name was "Piedmont Corridor".  The section of the former "Green 40" was closed down for reconstruction starting in late 2018, and the  name change wasn't official until after the freeway reopened on February 2, 2020.

When the eastern-most segment of the Greenville Bypass is completed, what will become of existing US 82/278 from Old Hwy. 61 to just east of the Chruch St. intersection? Will the new roadways shown here: https://www.google.com/maps/@33.3980922,-90.897779,284m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu, become the eastern terminus of the old route, or will the old route be converted into a 2-lane cul-de-sac?

Yesterday, I made a quick trip to snap a few pictures of paving, now underway, on I-465. Photos were taken Wednesday, April 17, 2024.

As many of you already know, the final section of the I-69 corridor project, Section 6, includes the widening of I-465 between I-65 and I-70 on the south and southwest sides of Indianapolis from three lanes in each direction to four. The I-69/I-465 interchange design has been baked into the added lanes of I-465. That means the added lanes of I-465 are integral to the new I-69 interchange; without them the interchange would not be functional.

Let's go the pictures:

Zoomed in shot looking east from the Mann Road overpass toward I-465. Subcontractor E & B Paving is at work paving a wide strip for the future eastbound lanes.

Mid-range view, again from Mann Road.

Closer look. The paving operation involved three pieces of equipment—a spreader, the slipform paver, and a texture/cure machine, which tines the plastic concrete and applies a curing compound. The spreader and slipform paver, while separate, work closely together, while the texture/cure machine typically follows 20 to 30 yards behind.

Measuring off for the vertical joint cut. This concrete has probably cured for six to 10 hours, hard enough to walk on, but not yet for vehicles.

Cropped, zoomed in shot of the paving crew. With the afternoon waning, work was wrapping up for day. Adjacent to the slipform paver appears to be a fuel truck. On the left are repair/maintenance vehicles in case any work or adjustments need to made to the equipment. Not sure why the dump truck was there, as the paving operation had ended for the day.

Another mid-range view. It will take the paving crew two or three more days to reach the Harmon Ditch bridge. After that, they'll cross over and pave the section up to near the White River bridge. As mentioned earlier, this is a wide slab. Paving progress is relatively slow, perhaps around 25–30 feet per hour. The slipform paver can, of course, go faster, but the pace depends on how much fresh concrete can be regularly delivered to the operation.

Another long range view. After this strip of concrete has cured, rebar will be put down on the asphalt base to the left in preparation to paving.

One more. Note the vertical grooves put down by the texture/cure machine.

Here's a snap of the Harding Street/I-465 interchange:

Looking northeast toward the new eastbound I-465 bridge over Harding Street and the eastbound exit ramp (foreground). This whole area is very unpedestrian friendly. There are no sidewalks to speak of and traffic is typically heavy. Northbound traffic is backed up because of the pesky light to turn left from Harding to I-465 west.

And here's a couple of a new housing development in Martinsville:

On the eastside of Martisville, east of I-69, major home builder D. R. Horton is building 280 new houses. The development is on Artesian Avenue just a little south of the Walmart. The view is looking northeast. This is a big deal for Martinsville, as the new homes will likely boost the city's population by 10 percent. In the background left is a small strip shopping center; the Walmart is further to the left, out of view.

The view looking southeast. The development's new 3 and 4-bedroom workforce homes will be market rate, priced from about $225,000 to $280,000. The people who will live here will likely work in either the Indianapolis area or in Bloomington. It's difficult to say whether I-69 was the deciding factor in moving this project forward, but, at a minimum, I imagine, it was given serious weight.

Quote from: mrose on April 17, 2024, 09:19:54 AMCould WI-57 count? No freeway segment exists, but its huge interchange with I-43 is an artifact of the plan to once route I-57 (43) over it.

The Stadium North freeway from Milwaukee was to end there with a planned bridge to go under the I-43 bridge over WI 57, thus the height of the bridge. Of course, that project was long cancelled.

The WI 57 portion was never signed as an Interstate.

IIRC, present-day I-43 south of that interchange was originally intended to be 'I-57' and the stadium freeway south of there and present-day I-43 to the north were never intended to be interstates (a reroute of US 141 to the south?).

I-35W, though I don't think I had been on it at a time close to the collapse since it wasn't on the family's normal travel patterns.

I've seen it but I didn't bother to get a picture.  I was much more interested in the uni-sign in Upland that day:

Southeast / Alabama to Buy Foley Beach Exp...
Last post by HemiCRZ - Today at 01:33:54 PM
Gov. Ivey has announced today that the State of Alabama is purchasing the Foley Beach Express toll bridge in Baldwin County for around $60 million. The entire beach express route from I-10 is now slated to become SR 161.

The state will drop the toll fee at noon on the closing date of the transation, sometime in May. The current owner and manager of the bridge will cease opening new toll accounts on April 30th.

Looks like ALDOT wants to keep the new Intracoastal Waterway Bridge and the Beach Express bridge and reconfigure the spans to carry northbound traffic on the existing bridge, with southbound traffic using the new bridge.
