Hwy 290/I-610 interchange make over

Is the new bridge built for the HOV through the 290/610 interchange only temporary? A lot of money for a temporary solution.

The location of the bridge in the pic does not line up with the animation. The new bridge architecture is different from the bridges around it.

Temporary bridges are not uncommon during construction. This bridge retains the connection of the 290 HOV lane to to NW Transit Center. It's not a connection you want closed for years while construction is going on.

Temporary bridges are not uncommon during construction. This bridge retains the connection of the 290 HOV lane to to NW Transit Center. It's not a connection you want closed for years while construction is going on.

Temporary in nature but not construction. Look at the pics again, that's a regular concrete bridge built to only have a shelf life of two years. I believe the north bound 610 to 290 off ramp bridge is temporary too.

That bridge may appear to be permanent, but if you'll look closer, you'll see that it's different than the other bridges. The permanent bridges at the interchange are being built to the horizontal scheme specs of the TxDOT Green Ribbon Project. That means those horizontal lines you see on the bridge columns and retaining walls and landscaping features. The temporary bridges are of a plain design without any aesthetic embellishments and probably aren't built for a 50 plus year lifespan (despite their appearance) like the permanent structures are. They're just there to get the job done until permanent connections are constructed. I passed by the 610NB to 290 exit that you mentioned on Saturday. The larger structure is permanent, but the connection from the 610 mainlanes is temporary as evidenced by the lack of aesthetics on the columns. Here's some more info on the Green Ribbon Project. They've been using in on most Houston District Highways since 2002-03.

Thank you for the detailed post, it is what I noticed about the esthetics of the temporary bridges.

And thank you for the link to the design esthetics TxDot is using. The same design can be found on new interchanges in Austin It is interesting TxDot did not use the same design in the Dallas on the mixmaster rebuild but used it on the High Five.

Google Earth has gotten brand new imagery of Houston, dated 8/31/2017, after Hurricane Harvey. It shows some flooding on the west side of Houston but it also provides a good satellite update of highway projects in Houston.

This is I-610 between US 290 (upper) and I-10 (lower).
