I-80/215 sign replacement in Salt Lake City

Looks like all of the old "Utah-standard" BGSs along I-80 and the east side of I-215 are being replaced with the newer, MUTCD-friendly signs. Some have already gone up, but I found a bunch of them sitting by the side of I-215 near Exit 4 this morning, so I of course stopped and took a short walk through the Signgeek Maternity Ward.

I presume those are the new replacement signs? In any case, the font on that SLC Airport sign looks hideous. It almost looks like they used a bold version of the font for the top line.

Yes, these are the new signs. They're mostly quite good (compared to the old ones, at least), but yes, I also noticed the strangeness on the airport sign. Baby steps, Utah, baby steps. :)

Dammit, you beat me to it. I got pictures of the new BGSs going westbound on I-80 and southbound on I-215 from 23rd East to 33rd South plus the yard by that Olympus mini-mall that I will post tomorrow!

My fave signs so far (the ones that I couldn't take pictures of this afternoon) are the Parleys Way signs going northbound on Foothill, but there has been a subtle exit number change on the Foothill Drive sign from Exit 1 on I-215 to Exit 129 (the I-80 number) even though that ramp obviously stems off WAY before the 0 mile point of I-215.

However, the APLs for Foothill, the I-80 eastbound split with I-215 southbound, and the 33rd South signs all look crispy.

Any, ahem, sign of US 189 here?

Here are the images y'all! As I'm pretty unexperienced with using the "[img]" tags, I'll just leave the link to my Flicker photostream: https://www.flickr.com/photos/154036146@N05/.

I didn't see any ... although, of course, not every panel was visible. (And I was hurrying so that the Sign Police didn't come try to handcuff me or something. :) )

State-name interstate shields on BGS's!

Colorado says, "yeah, so what's your point???".   :bigass:

As much as I like seeing the state name interstate shields, I feel like all these resigning projects are wasteful. All the BGSs on I-80 west between 13th East and I-15 were replaced, and the old ones weren't even 10 years old. And the exit sign for the airport from 80 west appears to have changed at least 3 times in the past 5 years.

EDIT: Also several of the BGSs on 80 eastbound near the north I-15 interchange have been replaced. The old ones weren't even five years old.

Another thing I've noticed about the new BGSs: there is no longer any outline at all on the US highway shields. The new signs remind me of the BGSs in Texas, such as this one: https://goo.gl/maps/9XkYGFRAmo62.

Some of the fonts look like Clearview instead of Hwy Gothic.  Clearview banned now, right?

https://www.citylab.com/transportation/2016/01/official-united-states-highway-sign-font-clearview/427068/

Yes, Clearview is banned. The sign in Texas is indeed Clearview, but none of the new Utah signs are (the only Clearview in Utah is on the Legacy Parkway). I only put a link to that Texas sign to show how US Highway shields are now used on BGSs, in that there is no longer an outline around the shield.

I spent the day in SLC today (first time in 30+ years).  My Take:

Most, if not all of those signs are now up. The ones within the 15/80 multiplex downtown were the nicest of the bunch.

I-80 west of town by SLC airport were the worst -- matches the bad mismatch of signage and sign eras all the way out to at least Saltair.   One exit BGS just says Wright Brothers with no suffix for the road.

Amazing how most of the signage down to Provo on I-15 looks great and uniform while I-80 heading west out of town looks like bear scat.

I assume you are referring to the signs on the C/D road, because the signs on mainline I-15 there are from the Olympic reconstruction project in 2001.

The reason the SLC to Provo signage is consistent is that almost all of 15 between 10600 S and US-6 has been reconstructed within the last 5 years. I-80 has not been similarly reconstructed.

Since I spent a little bit of time in Park City/Heber the past weekend, I can confirm that NO, there is no overhead signage of US 189 on either direction of US 40 outside PC, but YES, there are new two-shield smaller reassurances in both directions with the exception of within Heber's proper downtown. Sorry for not snapping pictures though!

I can add that the 40/189 concurrency is also fully signed at the SR-32 intersection.  :sombrero:

Went through there last week and can also confirm same. I do have pictures but will need some time to post them. Traveling north (west) bound, I saw the US 189 end sign gone, US 40 signed alone in Heber city limits as noted above, and a couple or three joint US 40-189 signs until the Utah 248 junction, where US 189 disappears. No US 189 signs are posted north of there, and nothing indicates US 189 traffic should transition onto I-80 eastbound.

Andy

UDOT's probably working on it; it will probably show up in a few months. UDOT's Region 3 and Region 2 cover the 40/189 concurrency, though I'm not sure why 189 isn't shown in Heber City limits. All that said, this is a good start.

A 189 shield has been put up next to the first US 40 eastbound reassurance marker! I was unable to get a picture, though. The bad news is that it's a SR 189 sign and not a US 189, but it's a start, and it's the still the only 189 anywhere in Summit County.

I can't wait to see pictures, but that's a very common mistake in Utah (likely due to contractor errors).

It doesn't help that local media often report US highways as "SR" in articles about accidents, construction, etc. KSL is especially bad at this, but I've also seen the others do it on occasion.

On a similar note, there was for a long time a US-190 sign at the mouth of Big Cottonwood. There also used to be a US-32 sign at the 40/189 junction. I believe I've also seen US-203 and US-143 signs as well.

It was replaced as of April 2016. See this GSV and compare it to this one from July 2016.
