Title: What is the worst movie you have paid to see in the theatres?
Post by: SteveG1988 on November 04, 2011, 11:38:13 PM
For me, it would be the Nightmare On Elmstreet Remake, the only movie i felt like walking out on but couldn't due to being the ride for a friend.

I like bad movies (plan 9 from outer space for example) and i just hated that movie...it was boring, tried to outdo the original movie.

For me, it would have to be Best in Show. It was about people who enter their dog in the biggest dog show in the country. Completely, totally, a waste of time and money. My wife wanted to see it, so I blame her for having to see it. I don't know how we made it through the whole thing. It was probably just so we could finish our popcorn.

I loved Best In Show ;)

For me, the only two movies I ever walked out of were the worst... Dungeons and Dragons (blame my high school friends) and Death At A Funeral, probably the least funny comedy ever created.

Lost in Space was dire (as an aside, it was the first 12-rated film I saw in the cinema legally - I'd seen a few aged 11. It was also the last one until I was at least 15, when the next age limit comes in).

Alien v Predator was fairly rubbish until the whole cinema started laughing, then it was quite good as a comedy.

I probably saw a lot of bad films when I had a season ticket at the university cinema - AvP was one, and Secret Window was another I remember being awful.

There's Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and the second and third Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

However, Mamma Mia (friend's 21st - I'd not choose) stuck ABBA songs in my head for about 2 weeks afterwards, so it's perhaps the winner.

Battlefield Earth, no contest!!!!  I had read the book more than once and anxiously awaited the movie adoption.  But it was the worst movie adoption I had ever seen.  It has to be one of the worst movies of all time.

I would've liked to have seen Mamma Mia in the theatre.  But, then again, I do have quite a few of their albums on CD, and the two cameos were pretty cool, IMHO.   :sombrero:

Worst movie for me?

When a Stranger Calls was bad, A History of Violence wasn't really satisfying.  2012 was bad, really bad, and I'm glad I did not see it in theatres, even the $1 theatre here.  I tend to be every careful with the movies I see in theatres, so I've missed some of the truly bad ones.  I save those for DVD rental or cable.  ;-)

Phantom Menace, without a doubt. But I went with about 75 people, many of whom were in costume and had boffer "lightsaber" fights in the front before the movie started. So it was more about the experience anyway.

Empire Records: Imagine a made-for-TV and the crossroads of an after-school special, throw in a few a few f-bombs for "street cred", and you have an idea about how uninspired and predictable  that one was.

Phantom Menace was just a tad disappointing, but there's like a thousand logical reasons and about three valid emotional reasons why it wasn't very good, for which there would be too much wailing and gnashing of teeth to get into.

I go to about two movies a year, nowadays. I don't work up much desire to waste three hours for a plot I've seen many times before, and my brain has a hard time accepting too much absurdity presented as fact, rather than comedy. I tend towards the (Western) animated stuff, lately.

The most recent Star Trek; really disliked the shaky cam on the big screen.  Also very put off by using California desert for Iowa - too hard to at least green screen in the proper background?  Seriously:

The remake of Alice in Wonderland from a couple years ago. Under normal circumstances I never would have gone to see it, but the power was out at our house and my sisters and I were bored.

I suppose the remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is also pretty high up there.

For something on-topic, I nominate "Speed Zone" (1988).  Wretched, cheap knockoff of Cannonball Run II.

Star Trek V comes close, though.

I can't really count any POS I saw as a teenager since like every teenager, I didn't know what I liked or what was even good.  Some of my favorite action movies from that period are now some of my favorite unintentionally funny comedies.  Like Independence Day or Godzilla.

As an adult, I'd place the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still near the top of movies I paid to see that I didn't like.  Just wasn't good.

I rarely go to movies these days.  If I want to see a movie, I'll download it because I'm a cheapskate and a filthy pirate and the MPAA can suck it.

This is easy, Turbulence (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120390/) in 1997 and Escape from L.A. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116225/) in 1996. Both horridly stupid. A bunch of us from work saw Turbulance on a Friday night for something to do, but it was February, which is a notorious month for bad movie choices. It came down to that or the The People vs. Larry Flynt, Turbulance barely won out...

I love Escape from New York and was eagarly anticipating the sequel. What a letdown with stupid special effects, a hokey plot, and a dumb basketball game attempting to replicate the gruesome fight scene between Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) and wrestler Ox Baker from the first. It was on tv this summer and I rewatched a portion of it to remember how lame it was...

Dancer in the Dark? :D

I like her in small doses.. Especially when she was in the Sugarcubes (before going solo) but her "I'm so eccentric" thing really got old fast.  She was just in the right place at the right time to work with some really inventive producers.. I never thought much of her vocals

And yes that movie was not good

Two come to mind, and both were in situations where I would have seen another movie if I could. The first was the 1987 movie Hunk(I'd be surprised if anybody else has heard of it), and the reason why I saw it instead of another movie was that a friend and I were at a shopping center with 3 theaters and we wanted to see a movie. The other two were rated R and we were underage, so Hunk(rated PG) was the only movie we could see. It was a comedy but it was stupid and one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
The other was the 1992 movie Night and the City, which starred well-known actors Robert DeNiro and Jessica Lange. The only reason why I saw it was because I had intended to go to a midnight showing of Bram Stoker's Dracula on the night it premiered at the same theater multiplex. However, the tickets sold out just before we got to the theater, and since I and the two other people I was with had planned to go to a movie, we decided to go to Night and the City because it was the only other movie showing at the same time. It was one of the most boring movies I have ever seen. I fell asleep at some point during the movie, so I don't even remember much about it, except that it was boring.

The Allnighter....sold on the Susanna Hoffs (Bangles) love scene.  Terrible terrible movie.  Worst movie I walked out of was Nacho Libre.  I love wrestling, Lucha Libre, Jack Black, nothing could go wrong....when I finally did walk out I wished I had half an hour earlier, when I first considered walking out.  Phantom Menace was awful too.  I hear there's an edit that minimizes JarJar Binks that I wouldn't mind seeing.  Six Degrees of Separation was awful too.  Emily Rose was horrible.

I'm having to really reach back here to remember one, because as I've aged I've become much more picky about what movies I go see.  Honestly, the first thing that pops to mind is something called Bigfoot (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0191831/), from back when I was about 10 (and judging from the year of its release it must have been on a second or third run by 1970, when I was 10).  Even at that age I could tell the picture was bullshit.  My dad had suggested it as he seemed to be interested in the ridiculous topic, some half-man half-ape creature that the people who bought the rolls of film and took the pictures claimed had scared them nearly to death while they were on holiday.

I'm sure I didn't fully understand just how ridiculous such supposed "real-life" monsters were at age 10, but I do remember for certain that I hated this movie.  I think it might have been because I had not long before seen the classic 'King Kong', and there was no way some drivel like this could have compared, even to a young kid.

Oh no, that can't be the worst!  Bad, but not the worst, surely!  It did have its moments.

I especially liked the "soundtrack":  since the picture had no music, iirc, this was merely a sampling of songs on themes ranging from the ethereal to the existential. I don't think I could name a single one of them for you, but the idea was different.

If you look at BWP more as a metaphor for the whole movie industry at that time, it kinda works.  In a way.  Sorta.

At least that movie didn't hit theatres, it was a tv-movie. The lind of movie you find it good first or "ain't that bad but could be better" and 20 years later, you wonder what the *censored* and how did you liked that movie.

I don't see a ton of movies, and I rarely pay to see one that I am expecting to be bad.

My friends convinced me to go see Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me with them. Definitely the worst movie I paid to see. Probably the worst movie I've ever seen (including TV movies). Quite possibly the worst movie ever made.

The only movies that I go to see in the theater are Sasha Baron Cohen movies.  The last 2 movies I saw in the theater were Borat and Brüno.  I plan on seeing The Dictator in the theater when it comes out, but I have no plans to see any more movies.  Sasha Baron Cohen is the funniest man alive.

In recent years, they've gotten away from the political component of American Dad.  You can't stay on the air for 7 seasons if you keep beating the same horse.  I find it to be the best written show of the 3 MacFarlane has, in general.

A movie that's been on TV a LOT recently is "2012".  And that is about the most terrible piece of shit you can find, when it comes to plot and characters.  John Cusak is constantly almost getting swallowed by the Earth.  Toward the end, they get on this giant ship (or "ark" if you will) but we can't start the engine unless we close the door?  Really?  Are you kidding me?  Are we that desperate to see another unbelievable stunt at this point?  Watching it on mute improves this movie greatly since there's no terrible dialogue and canyon-sized plot holes to distract you from the gorgeous special effects.

I don't think I can say I've been to a terrible movie at the theater.  That's because I make darned sure it's a movie I'm going to like before I even go to the theater.  I really haven't been more than five times in the last four years, I'd say.  We get our movies at the store or NetFlix.

Oh, wait..... When I was a kid, say about fifth or sixth grade, there was a time when my friend and I would go to the theater every week no matter what the movie was.  This was a small town where everyone knew everyone so, if it was rated R, we just had to call our parents and let them give the ticketmaster permission.  Anyway, one of those definitely counts as the worst movie I've paid to see in the theater:  The Land Before Time.  I'm not sure which one it was, since the original was put out before I lived in that town, and the others were direct-to-video.....hmmmm....but, yeah, that was a waste.

Ooh!  Funny story!  I don't think this one counts for the purpose of the thread, since I was actually refunded the ticket price.  This was back in the small town I grew up in as well.  The theater got movies third-hand, after larger towns were done with them, often months after the actual release date.  So I went to see 'Titanic' in the theater the first day it was showing in my town.  Little did the theater know, they were only shipped two out of three reels.  So the boat is starting to sink, but hasn't gone down yet, and..........  The end.  Yeah, when I saw 'Titanic' in the theater, nobody died.

How bout an overrated [movie thread]?

How about a thread about overrated movies?  :P

Sounds like a plan.  We better get a committee right on that.  Then we'll have to worst actors & actresses too.

All of them.

Mean Girls was the worst movie I've ever paid. Walked out at the very beginning too.

How do you know it was bad if you saw like a minute or two? Unless you snuck into another screen and watched another film, having paid to get in, it seems a total waste of money not to wait and see if it improves.

Thinking about poor introductions, Hitchhiker's Guide to Galaxy started badly, and then continued to be really bad. I'd forgotten all about it until I saw it again this weekend on TV. I'm glad when I saw it at the cinema it worked out at less than £2 (uni cinema, season ticket), rather than the £9 or whatever seeing a film now costs to see in a proper cinema without a student discount (it might be more), with London prices.

I think it was like 15 minutes or earlier into the movie. I never snuck into another screen. I thought Mean Girls was a good chick flick, but it wasn't.

I sure didn't enjoy Hunger Games this weekend.  Won't put it down as one of the worst though but still.

I had the (for me, anyway) unique experience of being the ONLY member of the audience when I went to see this film. It was something like an 11 am showing on a Tuesday.

I agree that this movie was pretty bad, but it was actually not as bad as I'd been expecting it to be. So I was actually pleasantly surprised that it was terrible.

Thinking about H2G2 - I think part of my problem is that I had read through the books, and even though I knew it would be different (as it's different in plot when in different media), the differences urked me as they were trying to make it into a rom-com. Plus being English and surrounded by geeks, it was hyped up by my friends.

And speaking of which, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows pt 2, while not a contender for the worst film I've paid to see in the cinema, was probably the biggest disappointment I've ever seen in the cinema (though all the last 5 films were let downs, but I did actually, account for the let downs of the previous films). The problem was the screenplay - it not only didn't follow the book (which is fair enough - certainly I expected a simplification), but was operating in pretty much a completely different universe. The 'physics' of the book(s) - the rules by which things work, the cause and effect - was totally different to the final film's, which were almost in opposition. Now I expected little of the titular Hallows in the first part, because of how the story progresses, but they were irrelevant for the second part in the films (I can't recall if they are even mentioned more than once), despite being foundational for the second part of the book as an essential part of how everything works and comes together. Whoever wrote the screenplay ought to be sent to Azakaban!
