In my travels over the weekend, I came across one of the unique and somewhat famous Maine country signs, which gives you mileage to a number of towns in Maine named after various countries. I enjoy traveling around Maine, for it is one of the more scenic and more quirky states in the nation. This little gem is in the little settlement of Lynchville at the junction of ME 5 and ME 35 and is one of a few signs like this scattered throughout the Pine Tree State. There's another similar sign at the state welcome center in Kittery.

Here's a photo of the sign (not my photo)

Only Paris and Naples aren't countries  ;-)

In all seriousness, I recall seeing some signs on I-81 in New York for a 'Mexico' when I went there in 2012. I recall another country, but I forget where and what it is.

There's a Texas, Mexico and Phoenix all within Oswego County, NY. In fact, Exit 14 for NY 481 has control cities of Mexico and Phoenix. As for the NY 104 exit on I-81, the cities or towns listed should be Mexico and Oswego, the latter being the city where I attended college.

I'll have to look at what else I have for Maine. I recall a sign on ME 220 that lists directions to Hope, Friendship, Liberty and Union.

"Officer, I'm always careful to drive the speed limit no matter where I am and that's what I was doin'." Said "No, you weren't," she said, "Yes, I was." He said, "Madam, I just clocked you at 22 MPH," and she said "That's the speed limit," he said "No ma'am, that's the route numbah!"  - Gary Crocker

NY has a ton of place names like this as well.  Some of them look like they were specifically designed to raise eyebrows.  The hamlet of Texas is in the Town of Mexico and the Village of Poland has a border with the Town of Russia.  Some names duplicate too, such as Rochester and Florida.

I had a professor that mixed up "Austerlitz, NY" with "Auschwitz, NY"

My dad had always made a joke about taking us to "Rome" aka Rome, Maine.  :-D

Better than Rome, NY.

When I mentioned to one person that I lived in Rome for a year, she thought I meant Rome, Italy until I clarified that it was Rome, NY.  It's become an in joke.

Back when Ford offered a diesel-powered Escort in the mid-80s (that got about 45 mpg on the highway); several billboards around the Greater Boston area featured airfare-like signs that read (as an example) Boston to China: $50* with a Ford Escort driving by a supplemental sign reading Welcome To China, Maine.

*I forget the listed price.

There were a few other similar-themed Diesel Escort billboard ads that listed various Maine towns named after either countries or foreighn cities.
