315 - Downtown to 270...
March, 1960 - Ohio State asks ODOT (Ohio Dept. of Highways at that time) to designate Olentangy River Rd as a state highway from Oh 161 on south so Olentangy River Rd can be eligible for state highway funds.

April, 1960 - Olentangy River Rd is to be designated as US 23 as part of Ohio's Highway System and later to become a freeway if ODH proposal is accepted.

My interpretation of a 1937 report for traffic improvement for Columbus (by Roger Morrison, Univ. of Michigan :confused:)

Blue line - proposed innerbelt
Green line - arterial radial streets
Red line - "Outer loop"
Yellow line - Rerouting of US 62 (and Oh 3). (Note, US 23, 33 (then Oh 31), 40, along Oh 3, 16, and 104 were all to be rerouted onto eiher of these bypasses.

The picture of 315 at Ackerman Rd  in 1974 shows that the ramps of the end of the expressway are in a very similar configuration to the end of the US 30 (N) expressway near Beaverdam and I-75.

The US 30 west ramp was a little more gradual than the 315 South ramp and went under the cross road and not over it.

I guess Ohio like that idea for "temporary" endings.

The only reason I found that photo archive was I was googling to look for an online index for the old Columbus Citizen-Journal after going through the Dispatch's online news index (via the Columbus Library). I didn't find articles, but I did find photos which are just as good.

What purpose did those two abandoned ramps serve?  Looks like it was an off-ramp from and an on-ramp to OH-315 South.

If that's where I think it is, those were a partial cloverleaf that was taken out for an extension of Twin Rivers Dr.

As for The Network's question, those were actual ramps to Goodale Ave. As for 6a's reply, he is correct as well.

What's amazing reading that is that it means that some of the signs along the stretch of 315 near Broadway north of Ackerman, some of the most distressed-looking signs in all of Ohio that somehow manage to evade replacement, are little over 30 years old!

I have spent alot of time on the historic ariel site.  There is some facinating stuff.  You can see lots of san Diego stuff, plus it finally answers what the original configuration was at the NY Thruway Victor exit.

From just north of Ackerman Rd southward, the signs were all replaced a couple of years ago.  Between there and just south of Henderson Rd, including the interchange at North Broadway (not just Broadway – that's in Grove City) is actually the youngest part of the Olentangy Freeway.

Yes--not the ones recently replaced at interchanges like Lane Ave, but the ones at the North Broadway interchange and some of the Bethel Rd interchange have aged quite badly and (gulp) ought to be replaced.  (I can't believe I said that about lighted, button-copy signs!)

On a similar note, I was surprised that many of the signs on 270 were not replaced when I drove through there last August, nothing wrong, I just thought that ODOT was gun-ho about replacing their signs, and I saw some Clearview signs on I-71 around Grove City.

They're gung ho about replacing signs, yes. Unfortunately, they don't seem to have any clue lately about which signs need to be replaced our even which signs they just replaced a couple years ago.
Wait, it's all Ohio? Always has been.

I was surprised to see even some FHWA-lettered reflective signs replaced on 315 in the recent project, like even those for the new exit NB for the Medical Center Drive.  Those were literally only a couple years old, but evidently committed the sin of having lights. (why not do like was done in Akron recently and remove the lights if they were such a problem, or just turn them off? The signs for that exit were new already!)
