I been on the freeway section of CA 78 a.k.a. the Vista Way between Escondido and Oceanside in San Diego county a few years ago. Wikipedia has CA 78 as today's featured article. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_State_Route_78
Get your kicks...on Route 99! Like to turn 66 upside down. The other historic Main street of America.

Yep. It only took 11 years to get it there...

Here's the AARoads page for CA 78:

It was last updated about three years ago, in 2013, and it includes pictures of the relatively new Brawley Bypass.

A couple of weeks ago i followed 78 from Oceanside and made it to Julian before bailing out to 79 south to I-8 and  back home via San Diego.  Lots of curvy road and mountains.  One of these days i will get all the way to Blythe

The drive from Brawley to Blythe is pretty desolate, but you do see all the people headed to Glamis on weekends the further east you go.

The part of the 1947 map I found most interesting was the routing of US 395 through Vista and the proposed route being marked, which was later built.  I am curious, do you know when the new for the time US 395 was finished?

Rick
US 101 is THE backbone of the Pacific coast from Bandon OR to Willits CA.  Industry, tourism and local traffic would be gone or severely crippled without it being in functioning condition in BOTH states.

I think the 395 routing north of Escondido off of the 78 alignment was built in 1948.

I would always try to get people to take that route at least once going from Phoenix or Tucson to San Diego. The terrain changes are pretty amazing, but I love that you can actually stop and walk around on the dunes. I know you can stop on I-8, but you're technically supposed to pay the entry fee (something like $20 last time I was there), and you don't feel so inclined to stop when driving on an interstate. Glamis is also pretty interesting during the off-roading season.
Pretty intense road.
