WOW i LOVE that color!!!  Did those shields used to also be on the road naked on cutout signs??
Unfortunately, no, Florida never did make their colorful shields in a cutout version. I made two, though, one in red and one in orange:

(Something must be wrong with the vector file, it produces a weird shadow in the upper-left corner.)

Some classics from Delaware, Ohio.

Some classic cutouts from 1958

From 1972, we have a n-west directional sign and a horizontal directional sign

Don't have a date for this one, but it's of the US 23 freeway through Delaware. Early 1960s.

I took this photo of what was an old Black and White guide sign and old Kennywood Park sign at Kennywood's Auto Ride.

Based on the mileage I'd say US 6/322 EB.

Antique toy signs from here in Delaware.

You'll notice that these devices look very similiar to the "sign" on the far right hand side of this photo as well

How about an old photo of an old road sign when it was new (from Michigan Tech Library):

Not only the sign, but that guardrail from the good old days....

There's a few old cast iron signs from the Lebanon Machine Company (of Lebanon, New Hampshire) that are scattered around Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont.  To my best guess, these signs were produced in the 1910s and 1920s and I suspect that they were color coded by state to some extent.  Most of the signs I've seen are in Massachusetts or New Hampshire, I doubt there's any in Rhode Island and I haven't come across any in Maine.  There's more of these signs in Massachusetts that I'm aware of, in the Boston area, but I haven't gotten around to photographing them yet.

Middlebury, Connecticut.  This is the only such sign that I've come across in the Constitution State.

Mendon, Massachusetts.  There's a bunch of old signs in general floating around Mendon.

Hingham, Massachusetts.

Originally in Randolph, Vermont, but now in front of someone's house on VT Route 2A.

Woodstock, Vermont.

Orford, New Hampshire.

Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire.

Bethlehem, New Hampshire.

On US 17 South, just south of Ridgeland, South Carolina, taken last week.

The sun was at a bad angle, so it's hard to see, but there used to be "ALT" next to US 17.

Plus if you zoom in enough on the image, you can also see the following text under the SC-170 shield, "US 17".

Not nearly as old as some of the excellent stuff posted here, but here's a well-worn one from I-95 and MA 128 northwest of Boston:

Circa 2002.

There isn't much button copy left in Missouri, is there? I have seen some on some of the intersecting roads along I-55 down in the bootheel area, but very little at all anywhere else in my travels in the Show-Me State.

there's a fair amount in Kansas City on side streets to the Exit 2 complex as of February, 2010.
