Hmm, I'm not sure I'm a fan of the red signs. Also, colorblind people are going to have a very hard time with them.

Dang, with the refection of that, everyone might be just blind. That sure did brighten up the page. :D
~EDIT~ I made my own version of an "Aztec" arrow on MS Paint/Openoffice. Here it is:

Nevermind that red is already reserved for "prohibited items in tunnels" and the like...

Since I've seen both the "ONLY" (next to a white arrow) and the black-arrow EXIT ONLY in use throughout the state, I wonder: was there a previous set of standards for picking one over the other, or was it just based on how big the sign (and text) was?
I doubt it.  California has always used the Exit Only panels which are positioned next to the standard white on green slanted arrows.  The new 26-inch Exit Only panels were added to Caltrans' sign specs in January of 2010.  AFAIK, only the 20-inch panels are "in the field" today.

Where might one find the recent Caltrans sign changes?

Is the black on yellow arrow part of the 26-inch exit only panel spec? If so, it would be a benefit.  The national MUTCD now requires the black on yellow arrow for all lane drops, even if it's just an intermediate interchange with a single-lane drop.

I seem to remember that the black on yellow arrow was used primarily with "down" arrows in advance of the exit, but a white on green upward arrow is almost always at the exit direction sign.

Here is the link to the new specs for the W61 series lane-drop panels...
http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/traffops/signtech/signdel/specs/W61_SERIES.pdf

Please note that the specs only use the black on yellow down-arrow however, previously in this thread (link), I pointed out that signing plans for a project in southern California uses up-and-right black on yellow arrows within a lane drop panel.  Whether the actual sign follows this plan is unknown.

I also mention in a later post that the California MUTCD does not address using slanted arrows within the lane drop panel.  All I am saying is that it is now possible to put black on yellow slanted arrow with the new 26-inch panels.

Continuing on with the Sacramento project, here's my conception of today's 50/5 interchange had designations remained in their pre-1982 state (which would have been the case if the 80 realignment in North Sacramento had occurred) -

Sorry to scare everyone with that red signs. This is the one of the recent signs ODOT put up in Akron last year.

And I re-created the sign based on it:

I also made a difference in the signs. The first one used the FHWA Series E font for the exit only part of the sign, in accordance to FHWA policy regarding the use of Clearview. The rest of the sign used Clearview Series 5W.

In this version, I used Clearview Series 5WR except the exit only part of the sign; it uses Series 5B instead of the FHWA Series E. Also, I closed up some space on the first sign and the 45-degree angle right exit part was slightly expanded.

The Premier: Looks like the kerning (letter spacing) between the L and Y in "ONLY" on the second version is a little too tight...

Also, is that supposed to be 77 North on the InfoCision sign (instead of 77 West)?

Today I spent some time in Inkscape drawing up a few signs for my SimCity nation, and am rather pleased with the results. They are based on US standards, but were heavily modified.

BGS:

Yes, I did use outline shields for the primary route (1).  :)

Rural intersection shield assembly:

Any thoughts or suggestions? Remember, these are not supposed to be MUTCD-compliant.  ;-)

You should probably use upper and lower case on that last sign... on first glance it looked like it said "GAYEST RIDGELINE ROAD" :spin:

^ Haha, thats what I thought too.
*EDIT* I have a question, what is the line between street names on BGS's for?
Here's an example of what I mean. This one only has the line on the sides of it. But what is the purpose of the line?

My guess is that it's simply there to delinate the bottom of the sign as representing one exit (for Medical and Callaghan), as opposed to two seperate exits.

I used Powerpoint for the creation of the signs, not Inkscape since it doesn't support Clearview.

I also made a gaffe on the 77 part, however, I-77 multiplexes on I-76 for around 3 miles. I would have made sense if it was on 76.

It's not so much that Inkscape doesn't support Clearview rather it probably doesn't support Open-Type Fonts.  For whatever reason the OTF version has severe spacing issues between certain letters which IMO, makes the font unusable.  Below is one of my earlier posts in that discusses how to get the True-Type Font (TTF) version which should work within Inkscape and resolves the spacing issues. Never mind.  Looks like the guy running the site has decided to shut it down.  He does have a link to the fonts but it is the Open-Type Font version only.

it is significantly to the east of higher-numbered interstates: 15, 17, 19, 25, and even part of 27.

All of those links are 404's for me. I already have FHWA Series B-F, but I kinda want some of those others...

Yup, the use of two horizontal ruled lines (on the same centerline) on interchange sequence signs to distinguish exits leading to multiple listed streets is a TxDOT heirloom.  TxDOT's Freeway Signing Handbook addresses their design.  Both the left-hand and the right-hand horizontal ruled lines must be one-third the length of the overall sign panel.

Does anyone know how to make signs on Google SketchUp?

Also, I tried using Clearview on inkscape (mainly 5W), and while it shows the font (Roadgeek 2005 Series 5W) but it doesn't show the actual font. Is there any way to fix it?

I was majorly bored tonight (that's what happens when you have no job, no date, and no life), so I decided (inspired by BigMatt) to recreate some signs from some of my recent trips...though I modified them slightly (such as giving them mile-based exit numbers and making a few subtle other changes as well).

And this last one is only partially road-related (in that it has nothing to do with actual roads, but is inspired by them)...this was my avatar over at a The Price is Right forum for a while (I know a few people here will recognize this one)...

And now for something completely different. :sombrero: I decided to see what happens when you apply MUTCD color schemes and Clearview to the signage at my favorite casino. Didn't come out so bad. You can compare it to what's there now, which is shown in the lower left corner of the image.

How did you get Clearview to work on Inkscape?  When I tried to use Clearview 5W, it didn't work.
