Routes that cross multiple times and intersect every time
« on: May 23, 2012, 12:39:12 AM »

As a spinoff of the "routes that cross more than once but don't intersect" thread, I offer this.

Exhibit A is US 68 and I-24. The two routes cross twice, once near Paducah and once near Cadiz, and there is an interchange both times.

Exhibit B is US 62 and I-24. They cross three times (Paducah, Kentucky Dam and Eddyville) and there is an interchange at all three locations.

Exhibit C is US 11 and I-64. They cross three times and intersect in all three instances (twice along 64's concurrency with I-81).

Exhibit D is US 231 and the William H. Natcher Parkway. They intersect at the northern end of the Natcher (where 231 is concurrent with US 60), cross twice near Morgantown and once near Bowling Green, and there is an interchange at all four spots.

I think US 250 and I-64 qualify for this thread as well.

I-65 and AL 185 cross twice.  These are back-to-back interchanges on I-65.

I-65 and AL 21 cross twice.  Once at the South Blvd interchange in Montgomery (unsigned on I-65) and again in Atmore.

I-49 and LA 182 cross three times, mainly due to the fact that LA 182 is the older alignment of US 167, which I-49 takes over for.

If you count highway "families" as one highway, LA 1208 meets US 71 four different times.

Let it be understood from here on out that I do not really care about how California does things.

Also, button copy sucks, Clearview is good, the right lane is the only one that should end, US Routes should never be truncated, and finally, I-49 South should be I-6.

I-79 and US 19 cross multiple times. In WV, the two are multiplexed between exits 57 and 67 and they cross at exit 91 and exit 152. In PA, crossings occur at exits 19, 30, 76 and 147.

I-57 and US 45 interchange all five times they cross in Illinois including twice consecutively between Neoga and Mattoon (part of three of four interchanges starting on the north side of Effingham).

I believe US-29 and I-66 in Virginia qualify. US-29 crosses I-66 six times and there's an interchange at, or adjacent to, each crossing, although the four inside the Beltway are all partial interchanges (I-66 inside the Beltway has only a single full interchange with any road and it's not US-29).

I-77 and US-21 have full interchanges 5 times and multiplex 3 times:

full interchange at exit 24 southwest of Blythewood, SC
full interchange at exit 77 (SC-5) southeast Rock Hill
full interchange at exit 82 A/B (Cherry Rd.) Rock Hill, just 2 exits later
multiplex at exit 90 (Carowinds) for about 17 miles into NC, stopping at exit 16
multiplex again (8 miles later) at exit 28 for 8 miles to cross Lake Norman, stopping at exit 33
full interchange at exit 42 (NC-115) southeast of Troutman, NC
full interchange at exit 54 north of Statesville, NC
multiplex at exit 79 southeast of Elkin, NC, ending at exit 83

I'd be similarly curious about I-70 and US 40.

US-5 and I-91 do so quite a bit as well, especially if normalized to overall length.

US 19 and I-79 don't count, because there is no interchange where the highways cross for the last time in West Virginia just south of the state line. The interchange nearby is posted for WV 7 (West Virginia University exit) but it's actually a county road that leads to WV 7 and US 19.

Oh, gotcha. They cross without an interchange, thus, not fitting into the "routes that cross multiple times and intersect every time" criteria.

Then this would eliminate I-70 and US 40 (they cross outside Effingham on the I-70/I-57 multiplex and once on the Kansas Turnpike); I-35 and US 77 (where they cross just north of the Texas/Oklahoma border); I-91 and US 5 (in Vermont they cross south of exit 23, south of exit 13, and twice between exit 9 and 10, etc.)

I-65 and US 231 would also qualify. They have an interchange once in Bowling Green, KY, and then four interchanges in Indiana, with Exits 193, 201 (with US 24), and 205 being consecutive, with Exit 247 in Crown Point to round out their crossings. (Yeah, foolish me would gloss over the OP. I aim not to repeat prior exhibits. :p)

ETA: I'd be remiss if I didn't include a Michigan example. County A-2 has interchanges for the four times it hits US 31 (but not I-196), with the last being its northern terminus.

In the close but no cigar category (or maybe the more lenient of you would be willing to count it) are the Garden State Parkway and US 9.  They cross at least half a dozen times, and have a direct interchange every time except one, pictured here.

US 9 comes in from the east, intersects Greenbush Road which connects with Exit 52, passes under the GSP at approximately milepost 51 with no interchange, then sweeps back around to join the GSP over the river at Exit 50.  (One thing that may count in its favor though is that 50 and 52 are both partial interchanges.  Exit 50 is SB-on/NB-off, Exit 52 is NB-on/SB-off.  So if you count them as halves of the same interchange, then maybe, just maybe, this would count.)

CA-33 in the Central Valley intersects I-5 four times. In fact, its northern terminus is on I-5, between I-580 and I-205.

US 441 in Florida intersects and interchanges with I-75 twice and interchanges both times.  Exits 399 and 414 around High Springs.

Its northern terminus in Tennessee, I believe is, or at least its close to an interchange with I-75.

US 92 in Florida junctions with I-4 five times and Exit 80 uses Exit 81A to handle the missing movements that it has.  Exit 127 is an EB exit to US 92, but does not cross, however its a junction.

US 302 near Littleton, NH interchanges with the three times it intersects with I-93.

US 46 and the Garden State Parkway cross three times and interchanges every time, although  GSP Exit 156 is a NB off and SB on.   Parkway Exits 154 is EB to NB, SB to WB and NB to EB and WB to SB as so is Exit 157, but u turns could easily be made on US 46 to go the other directions if need be.

I checked on Google maps and usends.com (http://www.usends.com/40-49/441/441.html) and US 441 extends beyond I-75 for a short distance to end at US 25W.  Interestingly, US 25 joins I-75 not far north of that intersection.

How bout just flip that and talk about I-40 and US 70 in NC, the other I would offer is I-40 and US 64...

When I made the comment above I forgot about the additional partial junction between US-29 and the eastern end of I-66 in the District of Columbia.

Speaking of Florida, how do US 27 and I-75 interact in the Sunshine State.

US 27 and I-75 cross and intersect in Ohio (Cincinnati) and again in Kentucky (Lexington).

They come close in Tennessee and Georgia (the Chattanooga area) but don't cross.

If someone can provide Florida info, we might have another winner.
