Interstate 25 travels south from Denver into Arapahoe County. Arapahoe County is perhaps best known as being the "first county." This dates back to territorial days, when a substantial portion of what is now the state of Colorado was Arapahoe County of the Kansas territory. When Colorado Territory was formed in 1861, Arapahoe County was named one of 17 original counties. At the time of Colorado statehood, Arapahoe County covered much of metropolitan Denver, with Denver as the county seat. The county was parceled out in 1902 into a configuration more similar to the city and county government found today.
