Interstate 43
Interstate 43 currently spans Wisconsin for 192 miles, from Beloit in the southern part of the state to Green Bay via Milwaukee. Original plans for the interstate called for it to exist solely between Milwaukee and Green Bay (along the now former U.S. 141 corridor). After years of debating and planning, this first portion was completed and opened to traffic by 1981. Six years later would see an extension of Interstate 43 from Milwaukee southwest to Beloit via the now former Wisconsin 15 freeway. Of all the interstates in Wisconsin, Interstate 43 is the only one that stays completely within the state. The closest it comes to leaving Wisconsin is at its western terminus with Interstates 39 & 90 near Beloit, where the freeway comes to within one mile of the Illinois state line.
