Traveling nearly 168 miles in Pennsylvania, Interstate 70 travels south from the Pennsylvania Turnpike at Breezewood to Hancock, Maryland and west from the toll road at New Stanton to Washington and Wheeling, West Virginia. The Interstate overlaps with Interstate 76 for 86 miles.
A trumpet interchange directly links the two routes at the west end, but the east end ties into a commercialized stretch of U.S. 30 through Breezewood. The freeway south from U.S. 30 was completed in 1964. West from New Stanton, the freeway opened in portions between 1954 and 1968.1 The age of these stretches of freeway shows with substandard ramps and narrow bridges.
Historically Interstate 70 was envisioned to run in tandem with Interstate 80S northwest from New Stanton to Monroeville and the Penn-Lincoln Parkway west into downtown Pittsburgh. I-70 was proposed southward from Pittsburgh along what is now Interstate 79 to Washington. The freeway between Washington and New Stanton was given the designation of Interstate 70S during these early years of the Interstate system.
