Interstate 75 South - Hamilton, Suwannee & Columbia Counties

Interstate 75 south
Interstate 75 enters Florida and Hamilton County near mile-marker 471. The longest interstate in Florida begins its journey southward traversing the scenic rural landscapes of north and north central Florida before being enveloped by the metropolitan areas of Tampa, Sarasota and Fort Myers along the southwest coast. The limited-access freeway turns east at Naples cutting across the state through the heart of the Florida Everglades before terminating in the western suburbs of the greater Miami metro area. The first interchange Interstate 75 encounters is Exit 467 with Florida 143. The state road connects the interstate with the small community of Jennings located along U.S. 41. Hamilton County 143 continues west and south ten miles to connect with the east-west Florida 6 in the western part of the county. Photo taken 08/07/13.
Florida 143 leads east from Exit 467 to Jennings, where the state road ends at U.S. 41 opposite Hamilton County 141 south. U.S. 41 parallels the interstate through most of the state, but they do diverge east of Naples as the former heads toward downtown Miami via the Tamiami Trail and the latter departs toward the direction of Fort Lauderdale along the tolled Alligator Alley. Southeast of Exit 467, Interstate 75 continues toward Florida 6. Florida 6 links the interstate with the town of Jasper. Tampa, in 207 miles, is the first metropolitan area Interstate 75 will encounter on its trek down the Florida peninsula. Photo taken 08/07/13.
Mileage signs such as these were added by the mid-2000s to alert drivers the distance to major interchanges with other major interstates and toll facilities throughout the state. Interstate 10 travels 362.3 miles east-west from Jacksonville along the First Coast to Pensacola, situated along the Emerald Coast. Jasper, which lies six miles to the east, is reached via Florida 6 east and U.S. 41 south. The small town of approximately 2,000 is the county seat of rural Hamilton County. The Suwannee River State Park can also be reached using Florida 6 west heading toward Madison. Photo taken 08/07/13.

U.S. 129 is a major north-south highway measuring 582 miles in length. Its southern terminus lies in Chiefland at U.S. 19 and 98 with a northern terminus at Interstate 40 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Photo taken 08/07/13.
Interstate 75 crosses the Alapaha River on its trek southeastward toward U.S. 129. The 190 mile river is a tributary of the Suwannee River, beginning in Dooly County, Georgia and meandering its way toward the Suwannee. Photo taken 09/28/08.

U.S. 129 has its beginning 74 miles to the south at junction U.S. 19 and U.S. 98 in Chiefland. Making its way north through four counties before exiting into south Georgia, the U.S. highway shares brief overlaps with U.S. 27 near Branford and with U.S. 41 near Jasper. Photo taken 08/07/13.

Interstate 75 spans the Suwannee River, which is the dividing line between Hamilton and Suwannee counties. The 266 mile river begins in the Okefenokee swamp in south Georgia and snakes its way southwestward to the Gulf of Mexico. In the 3.7 miles Interstate 75 south travels through Suwannee County, the interstate encounters Florida 136 at Exit 439. The route provides access to nearby White Springs lying to the east and west to Live Oak. The state maintains control over the portion from Exit 439 east to White Springs while the remaining portion is county maintained. Photo taken 08/07/13.
Florida 136 extends 3.4 miles east of Interstate 75 to end at U.S. 41 on the west side of White Springs just across the Suwannee River. The river also acts as the county line boundary between Suwannee and Hamilton Counties.
Live Oak is situated 11 miles west of the interstate and is the county seat for Suwannee County. It is also the crossroads for U.S. 90 and U.S. 129. There a second portion of Suwannee County 136 ends at U.S. 129, a few blocks south of U.S. 90. Photo taken 08/07/13.

Interstate 10 is a transcontinental interstate stretching 2,460 miles from Interstate 95 in Jacksonville to California 1 in Santa Monica, California, near the edge of the Pacific Ocean. I-10 enters Florida from Alabama near the city of Pensacola, continuing eastward north of Eglin Air Force Base and skirting the northern edge of the state capital, Tallahassee. The interstate ends its 362.82 mile trek across the panhandle and Northeast Florida near downtown Jacksonville at Interstate 95. Photo taken 08/07/13.

Downtown Lake City is situated southeast of Exit 435 along U.S. 90. Ocala makes its first guide sign appearance after Interstate 10, while Interstate 75 draws ever closer to Tampa and the greater suncoast area of Florida. One of two interchanges to serve Lake City, Exit 427 provides a direct link with downtown Lake City via U.S. 90 east. The highway between the interstate and downtown is also the main commercial thoroughfare for the area. Florida 47 intersects Interstate 75 south at Exit 423 southwest of Lake City. The state route spokes from U.S. 41 south of downtown Lake City as a four-lane arterial, but narrows down to a two-lane rural route immediately south of the interchange on its way to Fort White and Trenton. The route secretly joins U.S. 41 in Lake City and runs silently in tandem with U.S. 441 north to the Georgia state line. Photo taken 07/02/11.
Fort White is located 15 miles southwest of its junction with Interstate 75 and Exit 423. It also lies east of Ichetucknee Springs State Park, one of the many natural springs in the area. The park is accessible via U.S. 27, which crosses Florida 47 in Fort White, or via Columbia County 238 west. Florida 47 ends further south in Gilchrist County north of Trenton at U.S. 129. U.S. 41 and U.S. 441 share a multiplex from downtown Lake City to downtown High Springs, where U.S. 441 splits southeast toward Alachua and Gainesvile. U.S. 41 picks up U.S. 27 and continues south through Alachua County toward Williston. Photo taken 07/02/11.
Interstate 75 south approaches junction U.S. 41 and U.S. 441 at Exit 414. Both U.S. routes share separate multiplexes with U.S. 27, U.S. 92, U.S. 98, and U.S. 301 while continuing south through the length of the peninsula. O'leno State Park and River Rise Preserve State Park both reside along U.S. 41 and U.S. 441 south about 6 miles south of Interstate 75 and Exit 414, offering many amenities such as camping, fishing and hiking. Photo taken 07/02/11.
Alachua 236 is the next interchange for Interstate 75 south. The county route links the interstate with High Springs and Florida 121 in the community of Santa Fe. Gainesville is now within a half-hour reach. Photo taken 07/02/11.
A standard rest area two miles south of Exit 414 allows motorists the chance for a break along the often busy six-lane interstate. Another rest area south of Florida 121 (Exit 382) in Gainesville will greet motorists 29 miles ahead. Interstate 75 south crosses the Santa Fe river into Alachua County in 4.1 miles.
