New Exit 50 with Cox Road in western Auburn is slated to open during December 2012. The diamond interchange will serve Auburn Technology Park and western reaches of the city. Construction on the federally funded project was to begin between October 2003 and October 2004 and endure for about two years.1 However work did not commence until January 2011.

16.4 miles of Interstate 85 opened between Shorter (Exit 22) and Alabama 81 (Exit 38) in 1965.2
