Interstate 235 was part of the Des Moines freeway plan supported in a vote by the Des Moines City Council in 1957. The Federal Bureau of Public Roads followed with final approval of the project to construct what would be I-235, a $54 million investment. Design of the route was completed in 1958 and the freeway opened in stages between December 14, 1961 and October 30, 1968.
