A 1.7 mile extension of I-295 southeast to MD 210 (Indian Head Highway) at Oxon Hill opened to traffic in 1990. The connector provides direct access from MD 210 north to I-295 north for Washington, DC. Additions to the ramp during the Woodrow Wilson Bridge replacement project added a flyover connection to I-95 south / I-495 west. 09/25/04

S Capitol Street extends north from MD 210 (Indian Head Highway) to the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge across the Anacostia River. Malcolm X Avenue stems east from the MacDill Boulevard entrance for JBAB to Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue and 8th Street SE at Congress Heights. Dorothea Dix Avenue (formerly DHS Access Road) runs along the east side of I-295 north to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) St. Elizabeths Campus. 12/27/22
Construction from Summer 2018 to April 2022 reconfigured Exit 2, replacing a loop ramp and adding a flyover from I-295 north to Dorothea Dix Avenue. Malcolm X Avenue west links I-295 with S Capitol Street to Anacostia Naval Station and Washington Highlands. 12/27/22

Construction from 2018 to January 2023 reconfigured the three quarter cloverleaf interchange (old Exits 3 A/B) with Suitland Parkway into a parclo. 12/27/22
Suitland Parkway west ties into a roundabout joining S Capitol Street with the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge and Anacostia Drive at Anacostia Park. Suitland Parkway continues east of Washington to Morningside and Joint Base Andrews at the Capital Beltway. 12/27/22
Exit 4 leaves Interstate 295 north for S Capitol Street west across the Anacostia River to Nationals Park, home of the Washington Nationals MLB team, and D Street ahead of the U.S. Capitol. 12/27/22
An Arrow-Per-Lane (APL) sign outlines the forthcoming split with Interstate 695 west for the 11th Street Bridge. Road work between 2009-13 replaced the bridges built in the 1960s across the Anacostia River with new spans. The work coincided with both the extension of I-695 and truncation of I-295 to Exit 4 A. 12/27/22
The last confirming marker for Interstate 295 northbound on the Anacostia Freeway. D.C. Route 295 takes over at Exit 5B. 12/27/22
The Anacostia Freeway continues as D.C. 295 northeast to Fairlawn, River Terrace, Eastland Gardens and Kenilworth Avenue Freeway (MD 210) at E Capitol Street. MD 210 (Kenilworth Avenue) connects D.C. 295 with U.S. 50 at Cheverly, Maryland. 12/27/22
An end sign for I-295 appears at the directional T interchange with I-695 and D.C. 295 north. I-695 runs two miles north across the 11th Street Bridge and west along the Southeast Freeway to I-395 outside Downtown Washington. Approved by AASHTO in November 2020, I-695 is to be replaced by a realignment of I-395. 12/27/22
Exit 5 C quickly follows for 11th Street SE north and Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue SE south. 11th Street SE parallels I-695 as the local bridge connecting the Capitol Riverfront and Anacostia areas. 12/27/22
