Interstate 295 provides a bypass route for the greater Providence area to the west and north. The freeway carries four to six lanes on its two state routing, serving Woonsocket near the junction with Rhode Island Route 146. With origins dating as early as a 1947 in the Providence-Pawtucket Metropolitan plan, the freeway was submitted for inclusion in the fledgling Interstate highway system in 1955 as a parallel or replacement route to Route 5 and Route 116. Construction began later in 1964 with an overall completion by June 1975.1
