Interstate 985 branches north from I-85 at Suwanee and suburban Gwinnett County. The freeway doubles as both State Route 365 and State Route 419 throughout its 24 mile course to Gainesville. The four lane freeway carries a 70 mile per hour speed limit. 2016 traffic counts recorded by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) range from 67,800 vehicles per day (vpd) toward the south end 34,700 vpd ahead of the north end.

Prior to 1985, the Interstate 985 freeway was signed as SR 365 from I-85 to U.S. 23 and SR 20 at Buford Drive (Exit 4), and as U.S. 23/SR 365 from there northeast to Gainesville. The freeway was constructed in the 1960s as a new alignment for U.S. 23. The former alignment remains as State Route 13.
