Indiana State Road 25 south
SR 25 joins the Hoosier Heartland Highway at an interchange with U.S. 24 & 35, where the two US highways switch routings with the state road. This exit provides the best route into the city of Logansport along with the communities of Monticello (via U.S. 24 west), LaPorte (via U.S. 35 north) and Rochester (via SR 25 north).
The split diamond interchange was designed with the idea that most traffic is traveling from Fort Wayne to Lafayette, with SR 25 south completing the journey from U.S. 24 west. The stretch of expressway between the on and off-ramps is technically unnumbered, as all three routes here utilize the ramps and adjacent access roads between Burlington Avenue and SR 29. 10/26/13
Beyond the interchange with U.S. 24 & 35, SR 25 follows the four lane Hoosier Heartland Highway expressway southwest toward Lafayette (38 miles away). The stretch of SR 25 within Cass County is named for State Senator Thomas K. Weatherwax, a local politician who was a proponent for the Hoosier Heartland Highway project around Logansport. 10/26/13
Heading southwest from the interchange with U.S. 24 & 35, SR 25 roughly follows the path of the former SR 25, a busy two lane highway that stretched from Logansport to the southwest toward Delphi and Lafayette. During construction of the new expressway, the northbound lanes for a time served two-way traffic as the routing for the old SR 25 before the southbound lanes were finished. 10/26/13
Some grade separations exist along the Hoosier Heartland Highway, including the overpass carrying County Road 325 West near Clymers. This was the last stretch of the expressway to be finished, with some bridges opened in 2015. 10/26/13
SR 25 curves west to bypass the community of Clymers. County Road 400 West and a railroad line pass below the expressway on this stretch. 10/26/13
County Road 400 South leads immediately east of the expressway into the town of Clymers. The former route of SR 25 parallels the expressway closely for a short distance. It ends at cul-de-sacs just outside of Clymers. 10/26/13
An SR 25 reassurance shield south of Clymers, SR 25 silently enters Carroll County (population 20,155) just beyond the forthcoming County Road 1000 North overpass. 10/23/13
Southwest of Clymers, SR 25 continues as an expressway directly over the former two lane route, with the northbound lanes roughly following the path of the original highway. Previous intersections with county roads were eliminated and replaced with either cul-de-sacs or overpasses, resulting in a nearly freeway route. The Norfolk Southern railroad tracks follow the highway to the south for the bulk of the journey from Logansport to Lafayette. 10/23/13
County Road 100 East provides an access point into the town Burrows from the north off of SR 25. 10/23/13
County Road 900 North intersects SR 25 and provides another link to the town of Burrows directly east of the expressway. 10/23/13
Southwest of Burrows, SR 25 continues as an expressway in the direction of Rockfield. At the time of the photos, minor construction was still ongoing as the highway had just opened up between Logansport and Delphi. 10/23/13
Rockfield Road provides the only access from SR 25 into the town of Rockfield, which the highway used to pass through. Now the expressway bypasses the community to the immediate north with the former routing of SR 25 ending at cul-de-sacs at both ends of town. 10/23/13
An overpass carries County Road 500 West above SR 25 after the intersection with County Road 500 North. 10/23/13
Southwest of Rockfield, SR 25 is now only a few miles away from the Carroll County seat of Delphi. 10/23/13
Approaching the intersection with SR 218 on SR 25 south. The town of Camden is six miles to the east while Bunker Hill lies 34 miles away in Miami County via SR 218. 10/23/13
SR 218 heads east from SR 25 as a 91 mile highway that exists in two segments. The western 45 mile long stretch of highway begins here at SR 25 and travels east to SR 19 in Santa Fe. The former routing of SR 25 is just west of this intersection. 10/23/13
An SR 25 reassurance shield posted south of intersection with SR 218. 10/23/13
South of SR 218, SR 25 is 23 miles away from the Tippecanoe County seat of Lafayette. Delphi lies only a couple of miles away from here. 10/23/13
SR 25 starts to bypass Delphi along the city's east side. Pictured in this scene were the future bridge supports for the Freedom Bridge pedestrian overpass, a truss bridge that now spans the highway and connects to Delphi's Monon High Bridge Trail. The bridge was installed in 2014 and dedicated in 2015. 10/23/13
Main Street heads west along the former routing of SR 25 into the Carroll County seat of Delphi (population 2,893). At the time of this photograph the intersection with Main Street had not yet opened. 10/23/13
The SR 25 expressway nears the interchange with U.S. 421, SR 18 & 39. SR 18 goes for 141 miles across north central Indiana from the Illinois state line and east through Fowler, Delphi and Marion before ending at U.S. 27 in Bryant. SR 39 runs for 180 miles from SR 37 in Martinsville and north through Danville, Lebanon, Frankfort, Delphi, Monticello and LaPorte before ending at the Michigan state line. 10/23/13
SR 25 south arrives at the interchange with U.S. 421, SR 18 & 39. U.S. 421 travels for 232 miles across Indiana from Michigan City to the north through Reynolds, Monticello, Frankfort, Indianapolis, Shelbyville, Greensburg, Versailles and Madison. Nationally, the highway goes for 941 miles from Michigan City to Wilmington, North Carolina. Notice the Illinois-style highway markers on the guide sign. This is the only interchange along the expressway from Lafayette to Logansport. 10/23/13
The Clinton County community of Rossville lies under ten miles to the southeast along U.S. 421, SR 18 & 39. Delphi lies one mile to the north. SR 25 temporary followed the highway to the north into Delphi while the stretch from Delphi to Logansport was still under construction. 10/23/13
Now south of the interchange with U.S. 421, SR 18 & 39 on the south side of Delphi. A reassurance shield greets motorists along the first stretch of the SR 25 portion of the Hoosier Heartland Highway completed. The expressway opened to traffic on October 24, 2012 from Delphi to Lafayette. 10/23/13
The Tippecanoe County seat of Lafayette is 19 miles away on SR 25 from Delphi. 10/23/13
Now southwest from Delphi, SR 25 meets a connector road leading to the Old SR 25, which follows the former routing of the highway into Delphi. Although it is unannounced, around this location SR 25 enters Tippecanoe County (population 172,780). 10/23/13
Past the Old SR 25 intersection, SR 25 is three miles from Colburn and six miles from Buck Creek. Interestingly, the new SR 25 expressway has distance signs for these extremely small communities along the highway. 10/23/13
SR 25 passes over both County Road 900 North and Bridge Creek as it turns south toward Colburn. 10/23/13
Views of SR 25 as it passes around the community of Colburn to the west. The stretch of SR 25 from the Tippecanoe County line west to Interstate 65 is a concrete highway. 10/23/13
County Road 700 North connects SR 25 with the towns of Colburn to the east and Americus to the west. 10/23/13
Buck Creek is now three miles away with Lafayette closing in at 12 miles. 10/23/13
Now passing by the access road to County Road 900 East and the road's overpass over SR 25 in far northeastern Tippecanoe County. 10/23/13
County Road 750 East heads south from SR 25 to the town of Buck Creek. 10/23/13
Leaving the area of Buck Creek, SR 25 intersects County Road 450 North before paralleling a Norfolk Southern railroad line. The new expressway has several overpasses for local county roads. These are necessary because of the adjacent NS Railroad tracks. 10/23/13
The old SR 25 followed the edge of the Wabash River valley to the north while the new highway stays on flat terrain following the NS Railroad tracks. 10/23/13
The third in a series of overpasses carries County Road 300 East across SR 25. 10/23/13
Traffic must slow down as the SR 25 expressway turns westward and approaches the roundabout with Old SR 25. 10/23/13
SR 25 arrives at a multi-lane roundabout to the northeast of SR 25's interchange with Interstate 65. Old SR 25 ties into the junction from the northeast along the former routing of SR 25. Unlike the northbound direction of IN 25, travelers along IN 25 south must yield to traffic within the roundabout. 10/23/13
The last SR 25 shield along the eastern segment of the diagonal state highway greets motorists beyond the roundabout with Old SR 25. 10/23/13
SR 25 south next approaches the junction with Interstate 65, a north-south freeway that goes for 887.3 miles from Gary, Indiana south through Indianapolis, Louisville, Nashville, Birmingham, Montgomery and finally Mobile, Alabama along the Gulf Coast. 10/23/13
SR 25 south reaches the northbound I-65 on-ramp toward the Northwest Indiana area and the Windy City of Chicago. 10/23/13
Interstate 65 southbound heads toward Lebanon and the Hoosier State capital of Indianapolis. SR 25 used to combine with the freeway south to Exit 168 southeast of Lafayette. 10/23/13
Beyond this traffic signal and on-ramp to I-65 south, Schuyler Avenue continues along the former routing of SR 25 into the city of Lafayette.
As of September 13, 2013, SR 25's eastern section ends at the interchange with Interstate 65. Whereas before the highway followed I-65 and SR 38 around Lafayette, there is now an official gap as INDOT decommissioned the state road entirely from this point to the southwest side of Lafayette at U.S. 52 & 231. There the western segment of SR 25 starts and leads southwest toward its terminus at SR 32 near Waynetown. 10/23/13
