Alabama State Route 86 runs east from the state line and Mississippi Highway 388 at the town of Pickensville to U.S. 82 south of Gordo. The rural highway serves the Pickens County seat of Carrollton midway along a 27.40 mile course. SR 86 spans the Tombigbee River at Aliceville Lake across a high level bridge west of SR 14 (Broad Street). Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) 2021 traffic counts along SR 86 ranged from 1,114 vehicles per day (vpd) outside Pickensville to 3,181 vpd east of Carrollton.

Construction of the Gordo Bypass, a 6.2 mile long controlled access expressway, shifts U.S. 82 east of the town. With construction starting in 2017, the first phase cost $46.8 million. The second phase went to bid in 2021, with overall construction expected to be finished in 2022.1 SR 86 may be extended east over a portion of old U.S. 82 to connect with the new alignment.
