Arizona Loop 101 - Outer Loop

Price Freeway / Pima Freeway / Agua Fria Freeway

Outer Loop (Clockwise)
Loop 101 begins its journey on the outer loop as the Price Freeway in Chandler. This picture shows the transition ramp from northbound Price Road just north of Pecos Road as it enters the freeway. Photo taken 03/28/04.
The first exit along northbound after Loop 202 is Exit 59, Ray Road, followed by Exit 58, Warner Road. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Ray Road heads east-west from Ahwatukee east across Chandler and Gilbert before ending at Power Road near Williams Gateway Airport. Photo taken 09/02/07.
Northbound Loop 101/Price Freeway at Exit 59, Ray Road. Photo taken 09/02/07.
The next two exits along northbound are Exit 58, Warner Road, and Exit 57, Elliott Road. Both of these east-west arterial routes are part of the street grid system, and they are spaced about a mile apart. Photo taken 09/02/07.
A few of the blue Loop 101 reassurance shields remains along the Price Freeway stretch, but they are a dying breed. Most of the Pima Freeway segments feature the newer black on white shields. Photo taken 09/02/07.
Northbound Loop 101/Price Freeway at Exit 58, Warner Road. Photo taken 09/02/07.

Freeway art on bridges and retaining walls is the standard on the Loop 101 freeways (Price, Pima, and Agua Fria). This picture was taken at the Warner Road overpass. Photo taken 09/02/07.
Northbound Loop 101 at Exit 57, Elliot Road. Photo taken 09/02/07.
The next exit along northbound is Exit 56, Guadalupe Road, 0.75 mile. Photo taken 09/02/07.
The next five exits along northbound serve the city of Mesa, including Exit 56, Guadalupe Road; Exit 55C, Southern Avenue/Baseline Road; Exit 55B, U.S. 60 East; Exit 53, Broadway Road; and Exit 52, University Drive/8th Street/Rio Salado Parkway. Photo taken 09/02/07.
Guadalupe Road, as the name implies, serves the city of Guadalupe. Photo taken 09/02/07.
Northbound Loop 101/Price Freeway at Exit 56, Guadalupe Road. Photo taken 09/02/07.
The next two exits along northbound are Exit 55C, Baseline Road/Southern Avenue and Exits 55A-B, Junction U.S. 60/Superstition Freeway. Photo taken 09/02/07.
Although the exit for Southern Avenue is located south of the U.S. 60 interchange, Southern Avenue itself actually parallels U.S. 60 to the north. Baseline Road, on the other hand, parallels U.S. 60 to the south. Photo taken 09/02/07.
Northbound Loop 101 at Exit 55C, Baseline Road/Southern Avenue. Photo taken 09/02/07.
U.S. 60 heads west toward Interstate 10 and downtown Phoenix and east toward Apache Junction, Florence Junction, Superior, and Globe. Photo taken 09/02/07.
Northbound Loop 101 at Exits 55A-B, Junction U.S. 60 Superstition Freeway west/east. Photo taken 09/02/07.
The next exit along northbound is Exit 53, Broadway Road, which heads east into Mesa and west into Tempe. Loop 101 almost straddles the two cities here. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Mileage sign for the next three exits along northbound Exit 53, Broadway Road; Exit 52, University Drive/Rio Salado Parkway/8th Street; and Exit 51, Junction Loop 202/Red Mountain Freeway. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Northbound Loop 101 at Exit 53, Broadway Road. Photo taken 03/28/04.
The next two exits along northbound are Exit 52, University Drive/8th Street/Rio Salado Parkway and Exit 51, Junction Loop 202/Red Mountain Freeway. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Exit 52 not only connects to University Drive and Rio Salado Parkway, it also serves 8th Street. Photo taken 03/28/04.
As noted by the name of the street, University Drive heads west into downtown Tempe, passing by Arizona State University (ASU) and Sun Devil Stadium, home of the Fiesta Bowl. Heading east, University Drive enters the city of Mesa. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Northbound Loop 101 at Exit 52, University Drive/Rio Salado Parkway. This is the final Tempe interchange. Note the brown Loop 202 shield on the overhead sign; these shields are being phased out in favor of traditional black on white shields. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Northbound Loop 101/Pima Freeway at Exit 51, Junction Loop 202/Red Mountain Freeway. Loop 202 heads west into downtown Phoenix, with connections to Sky Harbor International Airport. Heading east, Loop 202 is incomplete; eventually, plans call for Loop 202 to extend all the way to U.S. 60/Superstition Freeway near the Ellsworth Road interchange. At that junction, Loop 202 will connect to the future Santan Freeway and head west again, meeting Loop 101 again in Chandler, then connecting to the future South Mountain Freeway to bypass downtown and serve the Gila River Indian Reservation. Photo taken 03/28/04.

The next exit along northbound is Exit 50, McKellips Road, 0.75 mile. Loop 101/Pima Freeway crosses over the Salt River (Rio Salado) between Exits 51 and 50, and the highway departs Tempe and enters Scottsdale. Note the ramps from Loop 202 coming in to the right. Photo taken 03/28/04.
The next 16 exits all serve Scottsdale: Exit 50, McKellips Road; Exit 49, McDowell Road; Exit 48, Thomas Road; Exit 47, Indian School Road; Exit 46, Chaparral Drive; Exit 45, McDonald Drive; Exit 44, Indian Bend Road; Exit 43, Via de Ventura; Exit 42, Pima Road/90th Street; Exit 41, Shea Boulevard; Exit 40, Cactus Road; Exit 39, Raintree Drive; Exit 38, Bell Road/Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard; Exit 36, Princess Drive/Pima Road; Exit 35, Hayden Road; and Exit 34, Scottsdale Road. Only 15 of these exits are listed, probably since Scottsdale Road marks the boundary line between the city of Scottsdale and the city of Phoenix. Photo taken 03/28/04.
The northbound freeway narrows from four to three lanes after the McKellips Road interchange. Photo taken 03/28/04.

Chaparral Road heads east to meet Alma School Road and west to Scottsdale Road. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Northbound Loop 101/Pima Freeway at Exit 46, Chaparral Road. For the next several miles, Loop 101 will remain within the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Reservation, which is why this area of freeway is far less developed than other areas along this freeway corridor. Photo taken 03/28/04.
The next exit along northbound is Exit 45, McDonald Drive, 0.75 mile. Photo taken 03/28/04.

There appears to be provisions here for either a pull-through sign that would state "North Loop 101" or an advance guide sign for Cactus Road, which is the exit that follows Shea Boulevard. But for now, the sign bridge holder is empty. Photo taken 03/28/04.
The Pima Freeway takes a brief jog west here, and remains below grade for almost a mile, which is unlike its generally straight and above-grade character it has enjoyed until this point. Photo taken 03/28/04.

The exit number tab is missing from this first advance sign for Exit 36, Princess Drive and Pima Road. Upon intersecting Pima Road, Loop 101/Pima Freeway begins to angle from northbound to westbound, but it heads northwesterly between Exits 36 and 30 (Junction Arizona 51/Lori Piestewa Freeway). The cardinal direction changes after Exit 35. Photo taken 03/28/04.

Views of westbound Loop 101 as it passes through the Arizona 51/Lori Piestewa Freeway interchange in north Phoenix. Today, this interchange is open. This interchange marks the northern terminus of Arizona 51; there are no plans to extend the freeway any further north at this time. Arizona 51 provides a direct route from north Phoenix to downtown and the airport (although the airport may also be reached via southbound Loop 101 and westbound Loop 202). Photos taken 03/01/03.
