New Jersey Route 138 extends 3.52 miles east from the end of Interstate 195 and Route 34 to Route 35 within Wall township. The state route accommodates four overall lanes with a grassy median. Interchanges along the route join Route 138 with the Garden State Parkway, the Route 18 freeway, New Bedford Road and Route 35.

New Jersey Route 138 East
The first reassurance marker for Route 138 east appears ahead of the on-ramps from Route 34 east and the Garden State Parkway south. 06/30/05
A loop ramp follows onto the Garden State Parkway (GSP) north to Middletown, Matawan, Woodbridge and Newark. 06/30/05
Just east of the GSP is a jughandled intersection with Allenwood Road south to Allenwood and north to Gully Road and Glendola. 08/29/05
Leading away from Allenwood Road, Route 138 sees a median crossover for contraflow during hurricane evacuation situations. 08/29/05
Left turns are restricted along Route 138. Instead a pair of jughandles provide U-turn access for adjacent apartment units, mobile home parks and office complexes. 08/29/05
A trumpet interchange joins the south end of the Route 18 freeway with Route 138. A 40.16 mile route, Route 18 originates in Wall township to follow a freeway north to Eatontown and west to Marlboro township. 08/29/05
Route 138 eastbound at the unopened ramp to unconstructed Route 18 south. A blank overhead alluded to the six mile continuation of Route 18 south to Route 34, Route 35 and Route 70 near the borough of Brielle. Plans for the route were shelved by 2003 when the interchange with Route 138 was reconfigured into a trumpet. 08/29/05
A sign replacement directs drivers on Route 138 east onto Route 18 north at the former planned southbound ramp. NJDOT opened a new ramp for the Route 18 freeway north on May 13, 2003, replacing a loop ramp further east.1 12/23/01
