Alabama 161 draws to a close at junction Alabama 180 (Canal Road) in Orange Beach. Alabama 180 stretches west to Fort Morgan and east to Perdido Bay. Long range plans discussed involve extending Orange Beach Boulevard northward across Wolf Bay on a new toll bridge. If built, a new north-south corridor would extend from the span to U.S. 98 and perhaps Interstate 10 in eastern Baldwin County. Photo taken 08/02/06.
Alabama 161 South
The beginning of Alabama 161 southbound as it departs Alabama 180 (Canal Road) in Orange Beach. Private investors lobbied in 2004 for a tolled two-lane span extending northward from Alabama 161 across Wolf Bay to Baldwin County 95. Had it been approved, ground breaking on the project was thought to get underway between 2006 and 2008. However discussions on the new bridge continue (2011), but no concrete plans for its funding or construction are committed. Photo taken 05/16/04.
