Arizona Loop 202 Outer Loop - Santan Freeway

Perspective from Loop 202 Eastbound
This mileage sign for the next three exits along eastbound Loop 202 is found immediately after the Interstate 10 interchange in Chandler, on this 2003-vintage freeway. The upcoming exits are: Exit 51, McClintock Drive/Chandler Village Drive; Exit 50A, Junction Loop 101 North to Scottsdale; and Exit 50B, Price Road. Photo taken 03/28/04.
A second mileage sign follows the previous sign for the same three destinations, except this sign is 0.75 mile closer than the other one! The next three exits along eastbound Loop 202 are Exit 51, McClintock Drive/Chandler Village Drive; Exit 50A, Junction Loop 101 North to Scottsdale; and Exit 50B, Price Road. Photo taken 03/28/04.
McClintock Drive forms part of the street grid system, heading north into Chandler and Tempe before changing into Hayden Road in Scottsdale. It remains parallel to Loop 101 about a mile to the west of the freeway. Photo taken 03/28/04.

This freeway ends sign is located immediately after the exit ramp to Exit 51, McClintock Drive. Loop 202 comes to an end almost as quickly as it began, but it is slated for a massive extension east that will link it to the Superstition and Red Mountain Freeways. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Mileage sign for the final (for now) two exits of Loop 202, Exits 50A-B, Junction Loop 101 north and Price Road. Photo taken 03/28/04.
The final two exits of Loop 202/Santan Freeway are Exit 50A, Junction Loop 101 north and Exit 50B, Price Road. Photo taken 03/28/04.

Eastbound Loop 202/Santan Freeway at Exit 50A, Junction Loop 101/Price Freeway north. This interchange marks the southeastern terminus of the belt route. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Since the direct transition ramp from eastbound Loop 202/Santan Freeway to northbound Loop 101/Price Freeway was not yet complete, the detour for Loop 101 (as indicated by this white on black trailblazer) was via northbound Price Road. All traffic had to exit, since Loop 202 east was not yet open. Photo taken 03/28/04.
Eastbound Loop 202/Santan Freeway at Exit 50B, Price Road. At the time of this photo, this was the temporary end of Loop 202. Photo taken 03/28/04.
The morning sun was not favorable for this shot of a distance sign. The next three exits (after Loop 101) are Alma School Road, Arizona Avenue (Arizona 87) and McQueen Road. Photo taken 11/11/06.
Exit 48 serves Alma School Road. This section of freeway to Gilbert Road was opened in December 2005. Photo taken 11/11/06.

Now swinging east, we find this pedestrian overpass between Ray and Higley Roads. Photo taken 11/11/06.

Power Road exits here, as exit 36. We are now in Mesa, and Power Road is one of the major north-south routes in East Mesa. Photo taken 11/11/06.
This Loop 202 shield appears to have lost one of the bolts holding it on to the signpost. The Santan Freeway was never signed with the original brown and white Loop 202 shields, as this section to Guadalupe Road opened in June 2006 as the last segment of the Santan freeway to open. Photo taken 11/11/06.
Distance sign to Hawes Road, Elliot Road and Guadalupe Road. This section of Loop 202 is where the proposed interchange with future Arizona 802 will be located. Photo taken 11/11/06.
Advance signage for Hawes Road, exit 34. Hawes Road is currently closed as there is no connecting road yet to the exit. Photo taken 11/11/06.
The future Hawes Road exit departs here, as exit 34. The exit is blocked off pending construction of the connecting road - some exits on Loop 101 were built the same way when it first opened. Photo taken 11/11/06.
Distance sign to Elliot Road, Guadalupe Road and Baseline Road. Photo taken 11/11/06.
Advance signage for exit 33, Elliot Road. Photo taken 11/11/06.

Exit 9 departs here for the stack interchange with Loop 101. Photo taken 03/03/07.
Passing under the Loop 101 interchange, Loop 202 enters the city of Tempe. Tempe, founded in 1871, was founded at the site of a ferry across the Salt River. Today, the city is known for ASU, Mill Avenue and as a vibrant employment center. Photo taken 04/08/07.

Loop 202 is travelling due north at this point, where it meets exit 4 to Van Buren Street and 52nd Street. Van Buren Street is former US 60-70-80-89, now decommissioned. Photo taken 03/03/07.
This is one of my favorite views along any freeway in Phoenix - looking north at Camelback Mountain, approaching 44th street, exit 2. Photo taken 03/03/07.
Now heading west again, we find advance signage for 44th Street, 1/4 mile. Use 44th Street to reach the Chinese Cultural Center. Photo taken 03/03/07.
Exit 2 departs here for 44th Street. The bridge over the freeway is the ramp from Loop 202 eastbound to McDowell Road. This sign originally said Loop 202 to Interstate 10, but that has long since been removed. Photo taken 03/03/07.
Still on the outer loop but on the other end of the Loop 202/Red Mountain Freeway, the next exit is Exit 1C, 32nd Street. Photo taken 03/03/07.
Last reassurance shield along westbound Loop 202 approaching Exit 1C, 32nd Street. The next exits are for 24th Street, Interstate 10, and Arizona 51. Photo taken 03/01/03.
Westbound Loop 202 at Exit 1C, 32nd Street. 32nd Street leads north toward Squaw Peak Recreation Area, but it only goes as far south as Van Buren Street. The airport prevents it from continuing any further south. This segment of 32nd Street does not directly connect with the 32nd Street that parallels Arizona 51 north of Squaw Peak Recreation Area. Photo taken 03/01/03.
Westbound Loop 202 approaching Exit 1B, 24th Street. The last exit along westbound is Exit 1A, Junction Interstate 10 and Arizona 51. Photo taken 03/01/03. Second photo taken 03/03/07.
24th Street skirts the western edge of Sky Harbor International Airport, and it leads to the western entrance to the airport. Northbound 24th Street closely parallels Arizona 51 south of the Squaw Peak recreation area. This picture was taken along westbound Loop 202 as it approached Exit 1B, 24th Street. The freeway names have since been removed from this sign, as seen in the second photo. Photo taken 03/01/03. Second photo taken 03/03/07.
Westbound Loop 202 at Exit 1B, 24th Street. Note that the high occupancy vehicle lane (left lane/number one lane) is now marked as a direct connection to the Interstate 10 high occupancy vehicle lanes. Photo taken 03/01/03. Second photo taken 03/03/07.
Westbound Loop 202 ends here, as it splits into eastbound Interstate 10, northbound Arizona 51/Squaw Peak Freeway, and westbound Interstate 10. The main lanes merge onto westbound Interstate 10. There is no "END" Loop 202 signage present. Photo taken 03/01/03. Second photo taken 03/03/07.
Gore point for Exit 1A, northbound Arizona 51 and eastbound Interstate 10. Contrary to some maps, U.S. 60 does not pass through this interchange; U.S. 60 follows Interstate 17 south and west of downtown for a more direct connection to Grand Avenue. Photo taken 03/01/03.
Westbound Loop 202 merges onto westbound Interstate 10 at this point. Interstate 10 through downtown Phoenix is the widest freeway in Phoenix, with up to five general lanes and at least one high occupancy vehicle lane and collector/distributor lanes. Photo taken 03/01/03.
