U.S. 30 East
Picking up U.S. 30 in Marshall County, we are on the north side of the county seat of Plymouth (population 10,033). As with the other major cities along U.S. 30, much of Plymouth's retail has moved to the four lane expressway, anchored around a couple of stoplights, the one ahead is for Oak Road. 05/30/10
One mile east of the intersection with Oak Road is a folded diamond interchange between U.S. 30 and SR 17 south (Michigan Street). From U.S. 30, SR 17 goes for 50 miles through Plymouth and Culver en route to its southern terminus at SR 25 in Logansport. 05/30/10
East of the Oak Road intersection, the highway becomes a little more freeway-like as it gets closer to the SR 17 south (Michigan Street) interchange. As the street name suggests, SR 17 was a part of the Michigan Road, which ran from Madison, on the Ohio River, through Indianapolis and north toward Plymouth and South Bend. 05/30/10
U.S. 30 crosses SR 17 south (Michigan Street) at its diamond interchange with the state highway. To the north, Michigan Street goes for a few miles before running into present-day U.S. 31. To the south, SR 17 (Michigan Street) heads into Downtown Plymouth before heading off toward the southwest toward Culver. 05/30/10
East of the SR 17 south (Michigan Street) interchange, the next major community is Warsaw (28 miles away) followed by Columbia City (46 miles away). Fort Wayne is 65 miles to the east. 05/30/10
Turning toward the southeast, U.S. 30 approaches its next interchange, with U.S. 31. U.S. 31 begins in Spanish Fort, Alabama and travels north near Interstate 65 to Indianapolis and northward to Mackinaw City, Michigan. Altogether, the highway travels for 1,280 miles. The highway travels for 266 miles across Indiana, beginning in Jeffersonville, across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky and heading north through the communities of Scottsburg, Seymour, Columbus, Franklin, Indianapolis, Kokomo, Rochester, Plymouth and South Bend before crossing into Michigan. 05/30/10
Now at the cloverleaf interchange between U.S. 30 and U.S. 31. Sections of U.S. 31 are being developed into a freeway that will improve travel between Indianapolis and South Bend, the state capital and state's fourth largest community respectively. The stretch of U.S. 31 from U.S. 30 north to the St. Joseph Valley Parkway (the U.S. 20 bypass of South Bend) will be built as a new-terrain four lane freeway that results in non-stop traffic from Plymouth to the South Bend bypass. 05/30/10
We pick up U.S. 30 in Kosciusko County (population 77,358) on the north side of Warsaw at the half mile approach to the interchange with SR 15 (Detroit Street). SR 15 goes for 95 miles from U.S. 35 / SR 22 at Jonesboro in Grant County and heads north through Marion, Wabash, Warsaw and Goshen before crossing into Michigan. 12/30/11
A button-copy guide sign directs traffic onto the folded diamond interchange with SR 15 (Detroit Street). To the south, SR 15 (Detroit Street) is an undivided four lane highway that leads into the heart of Warsaw. Several shopping centers abut the interchange to the north with the Elkhart County seat of Goshen about 23 miles away. In Warsaw, U.S. 30 is given the name of Lake City Highway, though locals are more likely to call the highway as simply 30. 12/30/11
Past the SR 15 (Detroit Street) interchange, U.S. 30 (Lake City Highway) reenters the city of Warsaw (population 13,559) beyond the signalized intersection with Anchorage Road / County Road 200 North. The county seat for Kosciusko County, Warsaw is given the nicknames of Lake City (because of the three lakes that are within the city limits) and the Orthopedic Capital of the World (because of the several companies based in the city that produce orthopedic devices). Several stoplights greet travelers as the highway bypasses Warsaw to the north and east. 12/30/11
East of the Anchorage Road/County Road 200 North intersection at Deeds Creek, U.S. 30 (Lake City Highway) is 20 miles from the Whitley County seat of Columbia City and 38 miles from Fort Wayne. 12/30/11
The next stoplight along U.S. 30 (Lake City Highway) is with Dubois Drive. Dubois Drive connects the US Highway with Kosciusko Community Hospital and Otis R. Bowen Center for Human Resources. 12/30/11
We now arrive at the intersection with U.S. 30 (Lake City Highway) and Center Street. Center Street follows the original routing of U.S. 30 and the Lincoln Highway into the communities of Warsaw and Winona Lake, which is home to the small college, Grace College. 12/30/11
IPFW's (Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne) Warsaw Campus is also found heading west along Center Street. Downtown Warsaw is about a mile to the west along Center Street from U.S. 30 (Lake City Highway). 12/30/11
Now heading east from the Center Street intersection, U.S. 30 (Lake City Highway) approaches the next stoplight with Old U.S. 30. The stretch of U.S. 30 (Lake City Highway) for the next mile consists of retail and industrial parks as the highway slowly transitions into the rural environs of Warsaw. 12/30/11
East of the intersection with Old U.S. 30, U.S. 30 (Lake City Highway) approaches the intersection with Orthopedic Drive, which serves DuPuy Company and a shopping center. 12/30/11
Now leaving the Warsaw area, U.S. 30 is five miles from the next town of Pierceton and 36 miles from Fort Wayne. 12/30/11
U.S. 30 at the intersection with County Road 325 East, leading north to Chapman Lake. 12/30/11
Views of U.S. 30 as it continues across eastern Kosciusko County toward the town of Pierceton. The highway slowly gains more traffic as Warsaw is close enough to Fort Wayne to be within commuter range of the city. 12/30/11
U.S. 30 approaches the junction with SR 13, which is a 138 mile highway that runs from Fortville at U.S. 36/SR 67 and heads north through Elwood, Wabash, North Manchester, Syracuse and Middlebury, ending at the Michigan state line. 12/30/11
Lake Wawasee, Indiana's largest lake, and the lake towns of North Webster and Syracuse are located to the north along SR 13. The Wabash County town of North Manchester is located to the south. 12/30/11
Now at the junction with U.S. 30 and SR 13, which becomes Main Street southward in the town of Pierceton. 12/30/11
East of the junction with SR 13, U.S. 30 is 13 miles from Columbia City and 31 miles from Fort Wayne. 12/30/11
Views of U.S. 30 to the east of SR 13 in the far eastern parts of Kosciusko County. 12/30/11
U.S. 30 crosses into Whitley County (population 33,292) and the Fort Wayne metropolitan area. 12/30/11
