U.S. 129 zigzags across Cherokee, Graham and portions of Swain Counties along a 63.57 mile long course in western North Carolina. The route can be divided in two portions, with the stretch between Georgia and Topton running concurrent with portions of U.S. 19, U.S. 64 and U.S. 74. Northwest from Topton, U.S. 129 navigates along a series of switchbacks and hairpin curves, known as The Tail of the Dragon, to Santeetlah Lake and Tapoco at the Tennessee state line.

U.S. 129 North
U.S. 129 northbound reassurance marker posted at the separation with U.S. 19/74 at Topton. U.S. 129 crosses the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad at-grade before turning right at SR 1395. The US route enters the southeastern tip of Graham County en route to Robbinsville ten miles to the west. 09/12/04
U.S. 129 South
U.S. 129 south combines with U.S. 19/74 seven miles southwest from Topton to Andrew and 25 miles to Murphy. U.S. 129 remains cosigned with U.S. 19 to the Georgia state line. 09/12/04
