Atlantic Commerce Corridor/Interstate 95 Florida

(Corridor 49)

Routing

Corridor 49 follows Interstate 95 from Miami to Jacksonville in Florida. This corridor forms the primary route for moving goods and services from South Florida to the rest of the country, especially as the primary gateway from Caribbean and Central American countries into the United States via Interstate 95. Where Interstate 69 is considered to be the "NAFTA Corridor," Interstate 95 in Florida is considered the "CAFTA Corridor" (due to its emphasis on free trade with Central America).

Purpose

This corridor would provide for improvements to various transportation infrastructure along Interstate 95 along the eastern coast of Florida. The first High Priority Corridor in Florida, the Atlantic Commerce Corridor (ACC) would focus on multimodal improvements to a variety of highway, rail, seaport, and airport improvements. This corridor was requested by a coalition of governmental and business agencies: Florida Ports Council, South Florida Regional Transportation Authority, Florida DOT and the FEC Railway.1

Improvements

Proposed improvements include but are not limited to the following:

  • Construct tunnel to connect the Port of Miami with the interstate system, perhaps via Interstate 395
  • Improve the Fifth and Sixth Street connectors at the Port of Miami
  • Develop and expand the intermodal container transfer facility at the Port of Miami
  • Construct Eller Drive overpass at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale
  • Develop and expand intermodal container transfer facility
  • Construct Florida 710 overpass (grade separation over FEC railroad) to connect to new south entrance at the Port of Palm Beach

Status

Each of the multimodal projects along the Interstate 95 corridor are on a specific timetable, depending upon funding availability.
