District of Columbia 295

The only "state" route within Washington is District of Columbia 295, which continues the "295" designation from Interstate 295 to the south. In a way, it connects to Maryland 295 to the north, but there is a numbering gap for the length of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, which is maintained by the National Park Service between the District boundary and Junction Maryland 175 (Jessop Road/Odenton Road). District of Columbia 295 connects the Anacostia Freeway with the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. This section of the freeway is four lanes with substandard shoulders.

Rather than place a District of Columbia 295 north shield in these two locations, a trailblazer sign of To Interstate 95 and To U.S. 50 is placed here. The exit for U.S. 50 is just ahead (Exit 10), but the connection to Interstate 95/495/Capital Beltway is a good distance north of here. Photo taken 06/02/03.
The next three roadside exit signs are fairly confusing because together they reference only two exits: Exit 8, Benning Road (left exit) and Exit 9A, Burroughs Avenue/Minnesota Avenue. Photo taken 06/02/03.
A railroad corridor closely parallels northbound District of Columbia 295 as it approaches Exit 8, Benning Road and Exit 9A, Burroughs Avenue/Minnesota Avenue. Photo taken 06/02/03.
Northbound District of Columbia 295 at Exit 8, Benning Road (left exit), which leads to Robert F. Kennedy (RFK) Stadium. The next exit is Exit 9A, Burroughs Avenue/Minnesota Avenue. Photo taken 06/02/03.
Northbound District of Columbia 295 at Exit 9A, Burroughs Avenue/Minnesota Avenue. Photo taken 06/02/03.

It is truly a feat to insert a left exit along a highway with very tight lanes and virtually no left shoulder, but this picture shows how a ramp was installed under such a tight configuration along northbound at the Benning Road exit. Photo taken 06/02/03.

Northbound District of Columbia 295 at Exit 9A, Burroughs Avenue/Minnesota Avenue. Photo taken 06/02/03.
The next exit along northbound is Exit 9B, Polk Street. Note the lack of a left shoulder and a very narrow right shoulder as well as stone mason bricks used for the pedestrian overpass. Photo taken 06/02/03.
Northbound District of Columbia 295 at Exit 9B, Polk Street. Photo taken 06/02/03.
Northbound District of Columbia 295 at Exit 9C, Quarles Street/Eastern Avenue; the next exit is Exit 10A, Junction U.S. 50 east to Annapolis and Exit 10B, Junction U.S. 50 west/New York Avenue toward the capital. Photo taken 06/02/03.
This pull-through sign is posted on the mainline of District of Columbia 295 as it passes under the Quarles Street/Eastern Avenue overpass and approaches U.S. 50. Photo taken 06/02/03.
U.S. 50 provides a major freeway corridor east to the capital city of the state of Maryland, Annapolis, as well as span the Chesapeake Bay en route to Ocean City with connections to beach areas in Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. Photo taken 06/02/03.
Northbound District of Columbia 295 at Exit 10, Junction U.S. 50 freeway east to Annapolis. Once U.S. 50 crosses the Capital Beltway (Interstate 95/495), it becomes part of hidden Interstate 595 until the Maryland 70 exit. Photo taken 06/02/03.

District of Columbia 295 - Other
Between the eastern terminus of Interstate 695 at the Pennsylvania Avenue/Barney Circle Interchange and the interchange with the Anacostia Freeway/District of Columbia 295, Pennsylvania Avenue carries traffic across the Anacostia River between these two points. Pennsylvania Avenue in effect acts as an expressway (not freeway) connection to complete a link missing in Washington's freeway grid. This picture shows eastbound Pennsylvania Avenue as it crosses the bridge and approaches District of Columbia 295. Photo taken 06/02/03.
Now leaving the Anacostia River Bridge, eastbound Pennsylvania Avenue approaches a junction with District of Columbia 295/Anacostia Freeway. Note that the shield is affixed to the side of this relatively new guide sign. Photo taken 06/02/03.
Eastbound Pennsylvania Avenue at the onramp to northbound District of Columbia 295. Note the unusual font on this oversized shield. Photo taken 06/02/03.
