District of Columbia 295 - South
Shortly after the Maryland state line, District of Columbia 295 (Kenilworth Avenue) sees a slip ramp onto the southbound side frontage street ahead of Nash and Meade Streets. Photo taken 12/26/06.
Next in line for southbound drivers is the slip ramp for Kenilworth Avenue south to Burroughs Avenue opposite its intersection with Minnesota Avenue. Major construction is underway in 2009 along District of Columbia 295 southbound to rebuild the Burroughs Avenue overpass. Photo taken 12/26/06.
Burroughs Avenue stems east from Kenilworth Avenue at Lee Street to Eastern Avenue at Burrville. Minnesota Avenue parallels District of Columbia 295 southwest to Benning, Fort Dupont Park and Anacostia. Photo taken 12/26/06.
District of Columbia 295 (Kenilworth Avenue) sees a slip ramp next onto the southbound frontage street for Hayes Street north. Hayes Street loops into the Mayfair Parkside community. Photo taken 12/26/06.
Benning Road arcs northwest from Bowen Road in Maryland to Glendale in Washington to a southbound side interchange with Kenilworth Avenue. Photo taken 12/26/06.
A slip ramp connects to the Kenilworth Avenue service road to its ramp for Benning Road west. Benning Road crosses the Benning Bridge to Kingman Park and H Street in central Washington. Metro's Orange and Blue Lines cross above. Photo taken 12/26/06.
The freeway sinks below the Benning Road bridge on the 0.33 mile approach to the Baker Street off-ramp to the River Terrace community. Photo taken 12/26/06.

Southbound at the ramp to Kenilworth Avenue south and Baker Street west at River Terrace. The right-hand lane defaults onto East Capitol Street west across the Whitney Young Memorial Bridge to RFK Stadium. Photo taken 12/26/06.
District of Columbia 295 transitions into the Anacostia Freeway from Kenilworth Avenue at East Capitol Street. East Capitol Street transitions into C Street west of Lake Kingman to North Carolina Avenue and Constitution Avenue west and downtown Washington. Photo taken 12/26/06.
A District of Columbia 295 reassurance marker appears along the Anacostia Freeway southbound at the Pennsylvania Railroad bridge. The span pictured here was rehabbed during the mid-1990s.1 Photo taken 12/26/06.
Ascending over the railroad yard, D.C. 295 southbound motorists next meet Pennsylvania Avenue SE at a three-quarter cloverleaf interchange. Jersey barriers pictured here obscure a ramp stub constructed in anticipation of the mid-1990s planned but unconstructed Barney Circle Connector. The Barney Circle Connector was a four-lane freeway extension planned from Barney Circle east across the Anacostia River.1 Photo taken 12/26/06.
Interstate 295 trailblazers and guide signs are posted consistently along the Anacostia Freeway south ahead of its merge with the Interstate at the 11th Street Bridge. Photo taken 12/26/06.
Access is only available to Pennsylvania Avenue SE east from D.C. 295 south. Pennsylvania Avenue leads southward from the U.S. Capitol to the John Phillip Sousa Bridge across the Anacostia River. Photo taken 12/26/06.
Pennsylvania Avenue SE continues to Penn Branch, Fort Davis, and Boulevard Heights, Maryland from D.C. 295 (Anacostia Freeway) southbound. Photo taken 12/26/06.
Southbound D.C. 295 at the loop ramp to Pennsylvania Avenue SE east. Pennsylvania Avenue brings traffic from the Southeast Freeway to the Anacostia Freeway. Photo taken 12/26/06.
Continuing south along Anacostia Park and the CSX Railroad, District of Columbia 295 nears the merge with Interstate 295 south. Interstate 295 overtakes the route southward on the one-mile approach to Howard Road and Suitland Parkway east. Photo taken 12/26/06.
Southbound District of Columbia 295 end shield assembly that was posted ahead of the 13th Street over crossing. This assembly is no longer posted as of 2009. Photos taken 01/20/00 by Jeff Royston & 10/15/01.
Begin Interstate 295 overhead posted on the 13th Street northbound ramp onto the 11th Street Bridge. Presently Interstate 295 begins at the 11th Street Bridge interchange with the Southeast Freeway (Interstate 695). In 2009 AASHTO approved a redesignation of the 11th Street Bridge from Interstate 295 to Interstate 695. This mileage swap coincides with a planned interchange upgrade here to add ramps in all directions between the two freeways. Presently there is no access from Interstate 295 south to D.C. 295 north nor from D.C. 295's south end onto the 11th Street Bridge north. Photo taken 12/26/06.
