Interstate 83 Northbound

The guide for Interstate 83 is split between two pages:

Interstate 83 North
President Street in downtown Baltimore begins at Fleet Street, and heads north directly into the southern terminus of Interstate 83, passing by Pratt Street, Lombard Street, and Baltimore Street. After passing the Fayette Street intersection, Interstate 83 begins its northerly journey along the Jones Falls Expressway. This photo depicts Interstate 83 after the Fayette Street intersection. Photo taken 06/02/03.
This view of the eastern Baltimore skyline is afforded on Interstate 83 as it angles a bit northwest toward Gay Street and Orleans Street. Originally, Interstate 83 was to be a longer freeway. It was to have continued due south from Fayette Street along the President Street corridor, then turn east along Fleet Street and Boston Street until meeting Interstate 95 near the point where Interstate 95 and Interstate 895 pass by each other northeast of the tunnels. Plans to construct Interstate 83 to the southeast were dropped by the mid-1980s. To handle the traffic flow, both President Street and Boston Street were widened. Photo taken 06/02/03.
An Interstate 83 shield without a directional banner is positioned along northbound as Interstate 83 passes on a viaduct over the vicinity of Orleans Street/U.S. 40. This is the first reassurance shield along northbound. Photo taken 06/02/03.
Merging onto Interstate 83 northbound from the North Gay Street on-ramp near downtown. Visible in the background is the U.S. 40 (Orleans Street) viaduct. Photo taken 10/10/04.
The first exit along northbound Interstate 83/Jones Falls Expressway is Exit 3, Chase Street. Even though this is Exit 3, we are still only a mile or so from the southern terminus at Fayette Street. It is probable that the exit numbers reflect the original mileage from the unconstructed connection to Interstate 95 rather than the mileage from Fayette Street. Photo taken 10/10/04.
This Interstate 83 Maryland northbound reassurance shield is located on the same viaduct within the city of Baltimore just prior to the Chase Street exit. There are a few state name shields remaining on the mainline within the city limits. Interstate 83 within the city of Baltimore is maintained by the city rather than the state, given the nature of several signs about a continuing reconstruction of the route from the southern terminus north to the city limits just south of Exit 11. This is a distance of approximately seven miles, and one of the performance measures of the City's Transportation Department is to maintain seven miles of Interstate Highway. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Northbound Interstate 83 at Exit 3, Chase Street; the next exit is Exit 4, North Avenue (1.25 miles). Note that the right lane ends; this situation may be changed as a result of the ongoing reconstruction project along Jones Falls Expressway. Photo taken 10/10/04.

Approaching the Chase Street overcrossing on Interstate 83 (Jones Falls Expressway) northbound. A major reconstruction project recently saw completion in 2004 involving repavement and bridge repairs for the Jones Falls Expressway through downtown Baltimore. Known as the JFX Phase II Project, it was started by the City of Baltimore in November 2002. Photo taken 10/10/043.
This series of photos provides views of the myriad bridge, viaducts, and other structures that criss-cross Interstate 83/Jones Falls Expressway along northbound in Baltimore. Interstate 83 passes Orleans Street, Madison Street, Calvert Street, Saint Paul Street, and Charles Street as it heads northwest toward Druid Hill Park. Photos taken 10/10/04.
Interstate 83 northbound at the joint departure of the Exits 6-7A-7B off-ramp for North Avenue U.S. 1 & U.S. 40 Truck) and Druid Hill Park. A loop ramp descends from the Jones Falls Expressway northbound southward to meet U.S. 1 & 40 Truck underneath the Interstate 83 viaduct. U.S. 40 Truck is vastly unsigned as it travels Hilton Parkway, North Avenue (U.S. 1), and Maryland 151 (Erdman Avenue) north of U.S. 40 and downtown. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Traffic not turning south on Exit 6 continues north to the Exits 7A/B stack interchange with 28th Street and Druid Park Lake Drive ahead at Druid Hill Park itself. The stack resides just east of Druid Lake in a compact fashion where with 28th and 29th Streets tie into Druil Park Lake Drive to the west. Photo taken 10/10/04.
The Exit 6 northbound off-ramp ties into the North Avenue Light Rail Station (MARC) before meeting U.S. 1 & U.S. 40 Truck itself. An Interstate 83 trailblazer is posted along the ramp where it meets the access road to the MARC station. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Traffic meets North Avenue at the JFX viaduct. U.S. 1 & 40 Truck overlap between the one-way street couplet of Fulton & Monroe Streets eastward to junction Maryland 151 (Erdman Avenue). North Avenue otherwise carries four overall lanes through dilapidated areas on its trek between the Walbrook and Clifton Park areas of the city. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Northbound Interstate 83/Jones Falls Expressway next approaches Exits 7A-B to Druid Lake Park Drive and 28th Street. Druid Park Lake Road heads west along the south shore of Druid Lake, then meets Maryland 129 (Swann Drive north and Druid Hill Avenue/McCulloh Street couplet south) at the southwestern corner of the park. Use Maryland 129/Swann Drive north to reach the park. Use 28th Street east to Charles Street north to reach John Hopkins University. Photo taken 06/02/03.
The next exit along northbound is Exit 8, Junction Maryland 25/Falls Road north. Maryland 25, which parallels Interstate 83/Jones Falls Expressway between U.S. 1/North Avenue and Interstate 695/Baltimore Beltway, follows Falls Road for its entire length within the City of Baltimore and in Baltimore County. This interchange provides a connection to Falls Road/Maryland 25 just east of Druid Hill Park near Roland Avenue. Photo taken 05/31/04.
Northbound Interstate 83/Jones Falls Expressway at Exit 8, Junction Maryland 25/Falls Road north. The next exits are Exit 9, Cold Spring Lane and Exit 10, Northern Parkway. Photo taken 05/31/04.
Another mileage sign is found along northbound as Interstate 83 leaves downtown and Druid Hill Park. Exit 9, Cold Spring Lane, is the next exit. Photo taken 05/31/04.
Cold Spring Lane heads west to meet Maryland 140/Reisterstown Road and Maryland 129/Park Heights Avenue and east to the College of Notre Dame of Maryland (at the intersection with Maryland 139/Charles Street) and Morgan State University (at the intersection with Maryland 41/Hillen Road). Cold Spring Lane eastbound changes into Moravia Road east of Maryland 147/Harford Road. Photo taken 05/31/04.
Northbound Interstate 83/Jones Falls Expressway approaches Exit 9A, Cold Spring Lane east. Exit 9B is for Cold Spring Lane west. Immediately after this sign, the concrete pavement ends, and new asphalt begins. The results of a recent reconstruction effort are clearly evident around Exits 9A-B. Photo taken 05/31/04.
On this cool, wet spring day, the new asphalt of Interstate 83 glistened at the Cold Spring Lane interchange. Note that the overhead sign bridges, along with the signs themselves, have all been replaced as part of an earlier construction project. Photo taken 05/31/04.
Northbound Interstate 83/Jones Falls Expressway at Exit 9B, Cold Spring Lane west. Photo taken 05/31/04.
After the Cold Spring Lane interchange is this Interstate 83 Maryland shield. Photo taken 06/17/00.
The next mileage sign along northbound provides the distance to Exit 10, Northern Parkway, and Exit 12, Ruxton Road. Photo taken 05/31/04.
Northern Parkway arcs around the northern boundary of the City of Baltimore, starting at Maryland 26/Liberty Heights Avenue in the west with U.S. 1/Bel Air Road in the east, at the Boundary with Baltimore County. Photo taken 05/31/04.
Since this was a holiday (Memorial Day), evening traffic was light along northbound Interstate 83/Jones Falls Expressway. Photo taken 05/31/04.
Jones Falls, the waterway that parallels Interstate 83 for nearly its entire length within the City of Baltimore, is visible as a waterway partially hidden in the shadow of the six-lane freeway. Interstate 83 was largely built along the fallsway, hence its name as Jones Falls Expressway. The first Northern Parkway exit, for traffic headed eastbound, is here (Exit 10A). Photo taken 05/31/04.
The second Northern Parkway exit, for traffic headed westbound, is located immediately thereafter, and the exit ramp again crosses Jones Falls. Photo taken 05/31/04.
Another Interstate 83 Maryland shield resides after the Northern Parkway interchange. Photo taken 10/13/04.
Upon passing Northern Parkway, Interstate 83 leaves the city of Baltimore and enters Baltimore County. The Maryland State Highway Administration assumes maintenance of the freeway from here north to the Pennsylvania State Line. Photo taken 05/31/04.
The next two exits along northbound Interstate 83/Jones Falls Expressway are Exit 12, Ruxton Road and Exit 13, Junction Interstate 695/Baltimore Beltway. Somewhere in this vicinity, Maryland 25/Falls Road crosses the freeway, moving from the east side to the west side. Photo taken 10/13/04.
Ruxton Road heads east to meet Maryland 134/Belloma Avenue in Ruxton and west to meet Maryland 25/Falls Road and Maryland 133/Old Court Road and Pikesville. Photo taken 05/31/04.
Northbound Interstate 83 meets Exit 12, Ruxton Road; the next exit is Exit 13, Junction Interstate 695/Baltimore Beltway. Photo taken 10/13/04.
Interstate 83 prepares to leave the Jones Falls Expressway, joining Interstate 695 east/inner loop for a mile until resuming its northward course toward York, Pennsylvania. The left lane of Interstate 83/Jones Falls Expressway exits to Maryland 25/Falls Road, which intersects Maryland 130/Greenspring Valley Road, then heads north to Oregon Ridge Park. The center lane, meanwhile, exits to Interstate 695 west/outer loop to Interstate 795 north and Interstate 70 west. The two right lanes of Interstate 83 exit onto the inner loop and continue as the mainline of Interstate 83. Photo taken 10/13/04.
Interstate 83 splits from Exits 13A-B at this point. Exit 13A is the center lane to Interstate 695/outer loop west, and Exit 13B is the left lane to Maryland 25/Falls Road north. Interstate 83 merges onto the inner loop of Interstate 695 for about a mile, and through traffic for Interstate 83 should remain in the right lanes. Photo taken 10/13/04.
Traffic to Interstate 695 west / outer for Pikesville and Owings Mills departs the Jones Falls Expressway via a cloverleaf ramp beyond the split with Interstate 83. Interstate 695 winds west from here to Randallstown and junction Interstate 795 (Northwest Expressway) for Owings Mills, Reisterstown, and Westminster. Photo taken 10/10/04.
A look at the Interstate 695 (Baltimore Beltway) westbound ramp departure from the Jones Falls Expressway northbound. A three-quarter cloverleaf interchange with a directional ramp from Interstate 83 south & 695 west to the Jones Falls Expressway south facilitates the movements between the two freeways. Photo taken 10/10/04.
The Jones Falls Expressway continues another half mile before ending at junction Maryland 25 (Falls Road) at Joppa Road. Maryland 25 enters the scene from Falls Road alongside the southbound lanes of the Jones Falls Expressway (JFX). Maryland 25 and Falls Road overtake the JFX from Joppa Road northbound through Brooklandville. Photo taken 10/10/04.
A traffic signal governs the intersection of the JFX with Maryland 25 (Falls Road) and Joppa Road. Falls Road next intersects the eastern terminus of Maryland 130 (Greenspring Valley Road) and the west end of Maryland 130 (Seminary Road). Photo taken 10/10/04.
Meawhile back on the Interstate 83 mainline... Interstate 83 & 695 share pavement between the Exit 23 and 24 interchanges. The overlap is officially signed with reassurance markers after the Interstate 83 on-ramp from the Jones Falls Expressway onto Interstate 695 inner. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Five lanes of Interstate 83 north & 695 east / inner prepare to split at the Exit 24 directional interchange at Seminary Park. Interstate 83 constitutes the right-hand two lanes of the Beltway for its northward departure to Tomonium, Cockeysville, and York, Pennsylvania. Photo taken 10/13/04.
This Interstate 695 Inner Loop reassurance shield omits Interstate 83. Sound walls are in place all along the northern reaches of the Baltimore Beltway. These barriers were installed in the late 1990s in conjunction with a widening project. Photo taken 10/13/04.
The second to last sign bridge for the Exit 24 split with Interstate 83 north on Interstate 695 east / inner. Interstate 83 serves the growing northern suburbs of Baltimore County through to the Pennsylvania state line. The freeway was built in the 1950s as part of the U.S. 111 corridor between Baltimore and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Photo taken 10/13/04.
Interstate 83 north parts ways with Interstate 695 east / inner at Exit 24. Exit 16 of Interstate 83 north serves nearby Timonium. Use Exits 18 and 20 for to Maryland 45 (York Road) for the community of Cockeysville. The freeway reaches the city of York in 37 miles and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 65 miles. Photo taken 06/01/03.
After the split between Interstate 695 east/inner loop and Interstate 83 north, Interstate 83 approaches Exit 16, Timonium Road, one mile. Photo taken 05/31/04.
Timonium Road east (Exit 16A) heads into Timonium and onward to the Loch Raven Reservoir. Photo taken 10/13/04.
Exit 16B leads to Timonium Road west en route to Baltimore Country Club/Five Farms and Mays Chapel Road. Photo taken 10/13/04.
Auxiliary guide sign displaying the connections of Exit 17 to Deereco Road and Exit 18 with Beaver Dam Road. Deereco Road parallels Interstate 83 southward from Padonia Road to the MARC Light Rail station. Beaver Dam Road continues north from Deereco Road to Warren Road and the Metropolitan Industrial Park. Photo taken 10/13/04.
The next exit along northbound Interstate 83 is Padonia Road, which leads east into Padonia and west toward Cronhardt. Photo taken 10/13/04.
Northbound Interstate 83 at Exit 17, Padonia Road; the next exit is Exit 18, Warren Road to Cockeysville. Photo taken 10/13/04.
The exit ramp to Warren Road is actually a flyover connection from the Interstate directly onto Warren Road, with no connection from southbound Interstate 83 to Warren Road or from Warren Road westbound onto northbound Interstate 83. Photo taken 10/13/04.
Use Warren Road east to Maryland 45/York Road to reach Cockeysville. Maryland 45 is former U.S. 111, and it parallels Interstate 83 from the Baltimore Beltway north to the Maryland-Pennsylvania State Line. Photo taken 10/13/04.
Northbound Interstate 83 at Exit 18, Warren Road east to Cockeysville (To Maryland 45/York Road). Photo taken 05/31/04.
The next exit along northbound also serves the city of Cockeysville, this time via Shawan Road (Exits 20A-B). Photo taken 10/13/04.
Shawan Road heads west toward Shawan and east to meet Maryland 45/York Road northwest of Cockeysville. A connection to the northwestern edge of Loch Raven Reservoir may be made via Maryland 145/Paper Mill Road. Photo taken 05/31/04.
The interchange between Northbound Interstate 83 and Shawan Road (Exit 20) is actually a modified cloverleaf, with merging traffic separated from the main lanes as seen in this series of pictures. Photos #1 and 2 taken 05/31/04; photo #3 taken 10/13/04.
Mileage sign posted on Interstate 83 between the Shawan and Belfast Road interchanges near the Western Run. Harrisburg joins York on all mileage signs from here northward to the state line of Pennsylvania. Photo taken 10/13/04.
The next exit along northbound is Exit 24, Belfast Road east to Sparks and west to Butler. A partial-cloverleaf handles the movements between Interstate 83 and Belfast Road at the community of Priceville. Photo taken 10/13/04.

Interstate 83 is generally signed with neutered shields (no state name) north of the Baltimore Beltway. Between the beltway and York, the countryside is rural, with small towns dotting the landscape in between parks and forested areas. Through its entire journey north of the city of Baltimore, Interstate 83 remains in Baltimore County. Photo taken 05/31/04.
The next exit along northbound is Exit 33, Junction Maryland 45/Old U.S. 111/York Road, one mile. It will not be long before this road has been known as Maryland 45 longer than it was known as U.S. 111. Photo taken 05/31/04.

The wide, grassy medians that are found along Interstate 83 north of Baltimore will come to an end upon reaching Pennsylvania. In Pennsylvania, the freeway was built to a standard similar to the Pennsylvania Turnpike, and guardrails/jersey barriers separate the two directions of traffic. Even so, Interstate 83 north of Baltimore was one of the earliest freeways built; in fact, several sections of the highway (Baltimore-Harrisburg Expressway) existed as U.S. 111 in the 1950s before it was designated as Interstate 83. Photo taken 05/31/04.
Northbound Interstate 83 reaches the final Maryland exit, Exit 36/Junction Maryland 439 to Maryland Line and Bel Air. A partial-cloverleaf interchange handles the movements to Maryland 439 (Old York Road). Photo taken 10/13/04.
Maryland 439 guide sign posted at the end of the Exit 36 off-ramp with Old York Road. Maryland 439 ends nearby at Maryland 45 (York Road) to the right. To the left Maryland 439 travels seven miles southeast to Maryland 23 at Shawville. Use Maryland 23 south from there 13 miles to Maryland 24 or U.S. 1 for the Harford County seat of Bel Air. Photo taken 10/13/04.
The final Interstate 83 reassurance shield posted on the Baltimore Harrisburg Expressway in the state of Maryland.
