Attached to the Rocky Branch Road over crossing is the one-mile guide sign for Exits 12A/B (U.S. 58) on Interstate 85 northbound. U.S. 58 comprises an expressway from Exit 12 west to U.S. 1 along the south side of South Hill. Drawing to within one half mile of the U.S. 58 cloverleaf interchange on Interstate 85 northbound. U.S. 58 relocated from Atlantic Street, Mecklenburg Avenue, and Danville Street to an expressway bypass of South Hill by November 4, 1999. The $35.1 million bypass tallies 5.2 miles in length between older sections of U.S. 58. Traffic to U.S. 58 eastbound departs Interstate 85 northbound at Exit 12A. The former folded-diamond interchange was upgraded to a full cloverleaf in conjunction with the U.S. 58 Bypass project by 2000.1 U.S. 58 otherwise enters LaCrosse directly east of Interstate 85. The federal highway travels east from Emporia and the Interstate 95 corridor to Hampton Roads and Virginia Beach (pop. 425,257) at its eastern terminus. Photo taken 10/02/04.
The overpasses that carry U.S. 58 over Interstate 85 were also rebuilt in conjunction with the South Hill Bypass project of 1998 to 2000.1 Exit 12B loops onto Atlantic Street westbound ahead of its split with U.S. 58 west (South Hill Bypass) and the northbound beginning of Virginia 47. Interstate 85 turns northeast from South Hill to Alberta and Petersburg. The four-lane freeway retains a forested median throughout the stretch between the North Carolina state line and Petersburg. Virginia State Secondary 644 (Brunswick Drive) reaches Meredithville one mile south of Interstate 85 at junction U.S. 1 (Boydton Plank Road). The state secondary route continues south from there six miles to U.S. 58 and 13 miles to White Plains. Virginia 46 continues North Carolina 46 north into Virginia near Lake Gaston. The state highway reaches Brunswick seven miles north of the state line and Lawrenceville eight miles north of Brunswick. After a one mile overlap with U.S. 58 Business at Lawrenceville, the state highway turns northwest eight miles to Cochran and Interstate 85. The one-mile guide sign for the second U.S. 1 interchange in Virginia (Exit 28) is posted below the Virginia 46 over crossing at Exit 27. U.S. 1 (Boydton Plank Road) shifts from south of Interstate 85 to north of Interstate 85 between Cochran and Alberta (pop. 306). U.S. 460 eastbound merges onto Interstate 85 northbound at the Exit 61 partial-cloverleaf interchange west of Petersburg. The federal route follows Cox Road west from Dinwiddie County Airport three miles to Sutherland and 30 miles to Blackstone and Fort Pickett. U.S. 460 constitutes a four-lane corridor between Petersburg, Farmville (pop. 6,845), Lynchburg (pop. 65,269), and Roanoke (pop. 94,911) in south central Virginia. Photo taken 10/02/04.

Exit 63A departs Interstate 85 northbound for U.S. 1 south to Virginia 142 (Simpson Road) eastbound. Portions of the Petersburg National Battlefield are accessible via U.S. 1 southbound to Hofheimer Way and Church Road. Included there is Fort Fisher, Fort Conahey, Fort Welsh, and Fort Gregg among other former military installations. Interstate 85 enters its final stretch on the Richmond-Peterburg Turnpike to Interstate 95 and downtown Petersburg. The first in a series of signs for Exits 68 and 69 directs drivers to Petersburg National Battlefield via Exit 69 (Interstate 95 northbound). The federal highway follows Interstate 95 briefly between the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike and County Drive. U.S. 460 represents the main link between Petersburg and Hampton Roads. The final off-ramp of Interstate 85 northbound (Exit 69) actually utilizes the Exit 50D ramp from Interstate 95. A collector/distributor roadway along the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 departs 1.50 miles to the southeast of the junction at U.S. 460 east (County Drive). The northbound c/d roadway sees ramps for County Drive, U.S. 301 (Crater Road), and Wythe & Washington Streets (U.S. 460 Business). The ramp from Interstate 85 northbound onto Interstate 95 northbound yields a slip ramp (Exit 69) onto the adjacent Wythe & Washington Street off-ramp of Exit 50D.
