Interstate 95 Northbound (Petersburg Vicinity)

The Guide for Interstate 95 is split between five pages:

Interstate 95 North
The Welcome Center is the first exit from northbound Interstate 95 after leaving North Carolina (the Tarheel State) and entering Virginia. Photo taken 06/01/05.
A welcome sign is located immediately after the welcome center exit on northbound Interstate 95. Photo taken 06/01/05.
Emporia is the first city served by Interstate 95 northbound in Virginia. Exit 8 connects Interstate 95 to Emporia via U.S. 301 (the parallel U.S. highway). Photo taken 06/01/05.
U.S. 58 is a major east-west highway that spans the southern tier of Virginia. Originating near Cumberland Gap at the Tennessee/Virginia State Line, U.S. 58 closely parallels the southern border of Virginia east to Virginia Beach, serving such disparate locations as Bristol, Danville, Emporia, Suffolk, and Norfolk. Much of the route is expressway grade. Photo taken 06/01/05.
Now north of Emporia, Interstate 95 northbound approaches Exit 24, Junction Virginia Secondary 645. Photo taken 06/01/05.

Northbound Interstate 95 reaches Exit 31, Junction Virginia 40. Virginia 40 travels west to Stony Creek and east to Sussex, the seat of Sussex County. From there, Virginia 40 continues east to meet U.S> 460 in Waverly, then ends at its junction with Virginia 10 in Spring Grove. Photo taken 06/01/05.
The next exit along northbound Interstate 95 is Exit 33, Junction Virginia Secondary 602. Virginia Secondary 602 connects U.S. 301 with Virginia 35 southeast of the Sussex-Prince George/Dinwiddie County Line. Photo taken 06/01/05.
Now in Prince George County, a rest area offers tourist information and road conditions prior to entering the Petersburg-Richmond metropolitan area. Photo taken 06/01/05.
The next interchange is Exit 37, Junction Virginia Secondary 623 near Carson. The secondary route connects U.S. 301 with Interstate 95. Photo taken 06/01/05.
Prior to Exit 37 (Junction Virginia Secondary 623/Carson) is the offramp for the rest area and tourist information center. Photo taken 06/01/05.
A major connection between Interstate 95, U.S. 301, Virginia 35, and Virignia 156 is at Exit 41. Use U.S. 301 north to Virginia 35 (southeast to Homeville and Courtland) and Virginia 156 (northeast to Prince George and Tallysville). Photo taken 06/01/05.
The final rural exit south of Petersburg is Exit 45, which connects Interstate 95 with U.S. 301. Use U.S. 301 north to Petersburg and south to the junction with Virginia 156 and Virginia 35 (see previous photobox). Photo taken 06/01/05.
This schematic map is the second time that Interstate 295 is mentioned on northbound Interstate 95 in Virginia. Use Interstate 295 north as a through route to Washington, D.C. and points north. Use Interstate 95 as a route into Petersburg and Richmond. Photo taken 06/01/05.
Still approaching the U.S. 301 interchange (Exit 45), the first overhead signs for Interstate 295 (Exit 46) begin to appear. Photo taken 06/01/05.
Northbound Interstate 95 reaches Exit 45, Junction U.S. 301. The next exit is Exit 46, Junction Interstate 295. Photo taken 06/01/05.
Interstate 95 northbound enters the greater Petersburg area at the southern terminal interchange of Interstate 295 (Exit 46). Interstate 295 provides the bypass for Petersburg (pop. 33,740) and greater Richmond (pop. 197,790). Photo taken 06/01/05.
Auxiliary guide sign of Exit 46 for Interstate 295. The eastern bypass serves the independent city of Hopewell (pop. 22,354) and the Fort Lee Military Reservation. Connections with Virginia 10 from Interstate 295 allow motorists a route to colonial Williamsburg (pop. 11,998). Photo taken 06/02/03.
This is one half mile south of the beginning of Interstate 295 northbound as seen on Interstate 95 northbound near the Tavern Road overpass. Interstate 295 intersects Interstate 95 again north of Richmond about 43 miles from here. Photo taken 06/01/05.
The two left lanes continue north on Interstate 95, while the right lane transitions onto northbound Interstate 295. Photo taken 06/01/05.
Interstate 295 northbound departs Interstate 95 at Exit 46. Interstate 295 provides a four to six lane bypass with 65 mph speed limits for Washington bound motorists. The freeway is a viable alternative to the slower and more congested Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike segment of Interstate 95. The James River Bridge of Interstate 295 features a picturesque cable-stayed span. Photo taken 06/01/05.
Virginia State Secondary 629 (Rives Road) intersects Interstate 95 at the Exit 47 diamond interchange. Rives Road travels between U.S. 301 and U.S. 460 at New Bohemia. Interstate 95 now is within the city limits of Petersburg. Photo taken 06/01/05.
The next five interchanges serve the city of Petersburg: Exit 47, Junction Virginia State Secondary 629 (Rives Road); Exit 48, Wagner Road; Exit 50, Junction U.S. 460; Exit 51, Junction Interstate 85 South; and Exit 52, Wythe Street. Photo taken 06/01/05.
Northbound Interstate 95 reaches Exit 47, Junction Virginia State Secondary 629 (Rives Road). Photo taken 06/01/05.
The next interchange of Interstate 95 northbound is that of the Exit 48A/B cloverleaf with Wagner Road. Wagner Road composes a divided highway between U.S. 301 (Crater Road) and U.S. 460 (County Drive) & Virginia 106 (Courthouse Road). Photo taken 06/01/05.
Use Exit 48A/Wagner Road east to connect to Virginia 106 en route to Prince George and a junction with Virginia 156. There is no connection to Interstate 295. Photo taken 06/01/05.
Exit 48A departs for Wagner Road eastbound to Virginia 106 & U.S. 460. The 1988 Official Virginia State Map displays Wagner Road under construction as Interstate 795. It is unclear as to whether or not plans for Interstate 795 consisted of a connection to Interstate 295 or the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike section of Interstate 85 to the west. Photo taken 06/01/05.
The pervasive Chesapeake Bay Watershed extends as far south as Petersburg; there is a sign posted at the Exit 48B ramp departure for Wagner Road westbound (not shown). Wagner Road ends one half mile to the west at U.S. 301 (Crater Road). Photo taken 06/01/05.
Interstate 95 northbound sees a 2.25-mile guide sign for upcoming Exit 51 with Interstate 85 south & U.S. 460 west. The sign is posted before a lengthy collector/distributor roadway departs for Exits 50ABCD (U.S. 460 east, U.S. 460 Business, and U.S. 301). Photo taken 06/01/05.
The first sign of the Exit 50 collector/distributor roadway departure of Interstate 95 north. Exit 50A involves the U.S. 460 eastern split from Interstate 95 southbound onto County Drive. U.S. 460 overlaps with Interstate 95 between Exit 50A and Interstate 85 (Exit 51). Photo taken 06/01/05.
Interstate 95 northbound at the Exit 50ABCD c/d roadway partition. The next off-ramp of the freeway mainline departs for Interstate 85 south & U.S. 460 west. Interstate 85 related guide signs in Petersburg see two sets of control cities: one for Virginia based interests (South Hill) and one for long distance interests (Durham). Blackstone (pop. 3,675) relates to U.S. 460 west of Interstate 85 and Petersburg. Photo taken 06/01/05.
Exit 50A departs for U.S. 460 eastbound (County Drive) from the northbound c/d roadway of Interstate 95. County Drive provides access to the nearby Fort Lee Military Reservation via Virginia 109 (Hickory Hill Road). Otherwise U.S. 460 continues eastward to Suffolk (pop. 63,677) and Hampton Roads. Photo taken 06/01/05.
A partial cloverleaf interchange provides the junction between Interstate 95 & U.S. 460 with U.S. 301 (Crater Road). U.S. 301 passes underneath the freeway from the southwest en route to downtown and Petersburg National Battlefield. Photo taken 06/01/05.
The northbound c/d roadway at the Exit 50C cloverleaf ramp onto Crater Road southbound. U.S. 301 southbound serves the Walnut Hill section of the city. Photo taken 06/01/05.
Interstate 95 enters the Interstate 85 & U.S. 460 west (Exit 51) trumpet interchange. Departing to the right is Exit 50D from the adjacent c/d roadway to Wythe (U.S. 301 south) & Washington (U.S. 301 north) Streets. The c/d roadway otherwise brings U.S. 460 westbound onto Interstate 95 northbound in time to depart via Interstate 85 south. Crossing below the freeway ahead is the northbound lanes of Interstate 85. These lanes see a connector ramp to the adjacent Exit 50D (Wythe & Washington Street) off-ramp signed as Exit 69. Photo taken 06/01/05.
The return of the Exit 50 c/d roadway brings U.S. 460 onto Interstate 95 for a 0.25 mile overlap. The oncoming lane becomes exit-only for Interstate 85 southbound (Exit 51). Interstate 85 provides a major highway serving the cities of Atlanta, Greenville, Charlotte, Greensboro, and Durham. The corridor within the state of Virginia is the least developed of the 668.75 mile freeway. Photo taken 06/01/05.
The southbound beginning of Interstate 85 departs with U.S. 460 in tow from Interstate 95 Exit 51. A sharp loop ramp provides the connection from northbound. The first seven miles of Interstate 85 represent the final leg of the former Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike. Photo taken 06/01/05.
With Interstate 85 northbound traffic now added to the fold, Interstate 95 widens to six lanes through the central business district of Petersburg. Visible to the right is the end of the joint Exit 50D/Exit 69 off-ramp from Interstates 95 & 85 northbound to Wythe & Washington Streets (U.S. 301). Photo taken 06/01/05.
Here is another view of the same sign, this time focusing on only the Exit 52, Bank Street, 0.25 mile sign. Photo taken 08/08/04.
Exit 52 departs for Bank Street at the Washington Street (U.S. 301 north) overpass. Bank Street travels between Virginia 36 (Market Street), U.S. 1 & 301 (2nd Street), Interstate 95, and Washington Street (Virginia 36). Photo taken 06/02/03.
Exit 53 (Southpark Boulevard) departs Interstate 95 north of the Appomattox River in Colonial Heights (pop. 16,897). Southpark Boulevard ties into Roslyn Road west of Interstate 95 and Charles H Dimmock Parkway east of the freeway. Photo taken 08/08/04.
The one-mile guide sign of Exit 54 (Virginia 144) is posted just before the off-ramp to Southpark Boulevard. Virginia 144 constitutes 4.9 miles of Temple Avenue between U.S. 1 & 301 (Jefferson Davis Highway) and Virginia 36 (Washington Street) between Colonial Heights and Fort Lee / Hopewell. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Use Virginia 144 (Temple Avenue) west to U.S. 1 & 301 southbound for the campus of Virginia State University at Ettrick. Photo taken 10/02/04.
The Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike identity of Interstate 95 leaves several trumpet interchanges behind. The junction with Virginia 144 (Temple Avenue) represents one of the formerly tolled exits. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Interstate 95 northbound at the Virginia 144 (Temple Avenue) off-ramp at Exit 54. Temple Avenue comprises a four to six lane surface arterial 1.9 miles west to U.S. 1 & 301 and four miles eas to Virginia 36 (Washington Street). Conduit Road passes over Interstate 95 at the ramp departure to intersect Virginia 144 east of Exit 54. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Now in Chesterfield County, Interstate 95 nears Woods Edge and Ruffin Mill Roads. The northbound off-ramp travels to Ruffin Mill Road (Virginia State Secondary 746) just south of Woods Edge Road (Virginia State Secondary 620). The rest of the Exit 58 ramps involve connections between Interstate 95 and Woods Edge Road. Photo taken 08/08/04.
