Interstate 95 Northbound (Richmond Vicinity)

The Guide for Interstate 95 is split between five pages:

Interstate 95 North
One-mile overhead of Exit 62 for Virginia 288 on Interstate 95 northbound. Virginia 288 provides the western belt line for the Richmond metropolitan area (pop. 996,512) between the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike and Interstate 64. The freeway will was completed by November of 2004. Photo taken 06/01/05.
This was a temporary guide sign for the one-mile distance ahead of Virginia 288 west (Exit 62) on Interstate 95 northbound. It was replaced by the sign shown above. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Virginia 288 links Interstate 95 with the community of Chesterfield (pop. 3,558) and the Virginia 76 tolled Powhite Parkway. Newer segments of the freeway serve the suburbs of Midlothian and Bon Air (pop. 16,213) to the south of the James River. It now connects with Interstate 64 near Short Pump. Photo taken 06/01/05.
A trumpet interchange represents the southern terminus of Virginia 288. Upon completion of the freeway to Interstate 64 in 2004, travelers destined for Charlottesville (pop. 45,049) and the Shenandoah Mountains will have a bypass route west of the capital city. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Exit 64 ahead provides access to Richmond National Battlefield Park via U.S. 1 & 301 north to Bellwood Road east to Fort Daring Road north. Photo taken 10/02/04.
One-mile overhead for Exit 64 (Virginia State Secondary 613) on Interstate 95 northbound. Photo taken 10/02/04.

Virginia State Secondary 613 (Willis Road) stems eastward from U.S. 1 & 301 to Interstate 95 Exit 64. The diamond interchange at Willis Road serves the Bellwood Manor and Chimney Corner communities. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Interstate 95 northbound at Exit 64 (Virginia State Secondary 613). An upcoming exits sign is posted at the Exit 64 sign bridge for Exits 67A (Virginia 895 east), 67B (Virginia 150 west), and 69 (Virginia 161). Photo taken 10/02/04.
One mile south of the 2002 opened Pocahontas Parkway (Virginia 895) on the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike northbound. The 8.8 mile facility links Interstate 95 & Virginia 150 (Chippenham Parkway) with Interstate 295 and the Richmond International Airport. The highway is tolled at a rate of $2.00 for passenger vehicles. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Auxiliary guide sign touting the connection between Virginia 895 (Pocahontas Parkway) eastbound with Richmond International Airport and Interstate 295 for a bypass of the city. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Originally the Exit 67 interchange represented just the southern terminus of Virginia 150. Ramps were added to Virginia 895 in 2002, as was a direct connection between the Chippenham Parkway and Pocahontas Parkway. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Use Exit 67B (Virginia 150 west) for the Defense Supply Center Richmond, Virginia and the Defense Department at Richmond, Virginia. Photo taken 10/02/04.
The eastbound beginning of Virginia 895 departs Interstate 95 northbound via Exit 67A. It is unclear as to whether or not Virginia 895 will ever be signed as Interstate 895. The state appears content to leave it as a state route at the present time. Construction is underway to extend Airport Drive to Virginia 895 at new interchange six miles to the east. The connection will enhance the usefulness of the Pocahontas Parkway as a route to Richmond International Airport. Photo taken 10/02/04.
The off-ramp to Virginia 895 eastbound from Interstate 95 north. Virginia 895 elevates in dramatic fashion to cross a high-level bridge over the James River. Dedicated the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge, the crossing necessitates high flyovers between Pocahontas Parkway and the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Virginia 150 northbound begins via Exit 67B of Interstate 95. The Chippenham Parkway encircles the southwestern reaches of Richmond along a four to six lane freeway. Virginia 150 sees ten interchanges on the route between Interstate 95 and Forest Hill Avenue at Strartford Hills. Interchanges exist with U.S. 60 (Midlothian Turnpike), U.S. 360 (Hull Street Road), and the Powhite Parkway (Virginia 76) along the highway. Photo taken 10/02/04.
The Exit 67A flyover to Virginia 895 soars above the Interstate 95 mainline. The interchange is at the present time the tallest within the state of Virginia. The distinction will not be its forever though, as the Interstate 95-395-495 Springfield Interchange will supercede the junction by 2007. Photo taken 06/02/03.
The original Virginia 150 southbound ramp to Interstate 95 northbound travels underneath the Exit 67A flyover. At present there is no ramp from Interstate 95 southbound to Virginia 895 eastbound. It was deemed to be too costly to construct the facility at the present time as traffic estimations were somewhat low. However it is to be constructed in the long range future. Photo taken 10/02/04.
The Virginia 895 westbound flyover ramp to Interstate 95 northbound snakes its way high above the six-lane freeway below. For much more information on the Pocahontas Parkway, please see Scott Kozel's http://www.roadstothefuture.com/Route_895_Connector.html. Photo taken 06/02/03.
An auxiliary lane forms with the merge of Virginia 895 westbound traffic onto Interstate 95 northbound. Ahead is the Exit 69 trumpet interchange for Virginia 161 (Bells Road) and the Port of Richmond. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Interstate 95 (Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike) enters the independent city of Richmond midway between Virginia 150 & 895 (Exit 67) and Virginia 161 (Exit 69). The upcoming interchange with Virginia 161 (Bells Road) represents its southern terminus. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Interstate 95 northbound at the Exit 69 trumpet interchange. Traffic to Virginia 161 merges onto Commerce Road from the trumpet ramps to the west. From there Virginia 161 travels 500 yards to Bells Road. The state highway travels northward through the city of Richmond, interacting with Interstate 95 again at Exits 78 and 80. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Non-cutout Interstate 95 northbound reassurance marker posted after Exit 69. Paralleling the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike here is the CSX Railroad line and Deepwater Terminal Road. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Trailblazers direct Interstate 95 northbound drivers to Exit 75 (Interstate 64 eastbound) for Richmond International Airport. Signs like these predate the completion of Virginia 895 (Pocahontas Parkway). Photo taken 10/02/04.
Next in line for Interstate 95 northbound is the Exit 73 trumpet interchange for Maury Street. From Exit 69 northward to Exit 80, Interstate 95 is amassed within the city limits of Richmond. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Interstate 95 transitions into an urban freeway from Maury Street northward. Thus the speed limit drops to 55 mph on the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike through the Richmond central business district. The Maury Street off-ramp departs ahead of the James River crossing into downtown. Photo taken 10/02/04.
The skyline of Richmond becomes visible at the Maury Street interchange. The ramps of Exit 73 tie Interstate 95 into 4th and Maury Streets four blocks south of U.S. 360 (Hull Street) and four blocks north of Commerce Road. Commerce Road parallels Interstate 95 from the south city line into the Maury Street neighborhood. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Attached to the Maury Street ramps overcrossing is set of Interstate 64 & 95 overheads for the impending Exit 75 merge. 109 miles of Interstate 64 lie east of Richmond and Interstate 95. The easternmost reaches of the freeway link the capital city with Williamsburg (pop. 11,998) and the Hampton Roads area (pop. 1,569,541). Photo taken 10/02/04.
Interstate 95 crosses a high level bridge over the James River into the Richmond central business district. Situated over the north banks of the river is the Exit 74A stack interchange with Virginia 195 (Downtown Expressway). The Downtown Expressway is a tolled facility linking Interstate 95 with Virginia 76 (Powhite Parkway) and Interstate 195. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Virginia 195 (Downtown Expressway) begins from the Exit 74A interchange of Interstate 95. The three-mile highway sees a 50 cent toll for all passenger vehicles. Virginia 195 sees ramps for U.S. 60/12th Street, U.S. 1-301/Canal Street, Meadow Street, and Virginia 161/Robinson Street within Downtown Richmond. Photo taken 10/02/04.
The skyline of Richmond (pop. 197,790) pokes upward to the west of the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike. The state capital complex is amassed within the high rises at the intersection of 9th and Grace Streets. Photo taken 06/02/03.
Interstate 95 northbound sinks underneath the Broad Street overpass at Exit 74C. A loop ramp departs ahead onto 14th Street and 17th Street (U.S. 360 west) two blocks to the north of U.S. 250 (Broad Street). This exit connects to Virginia 33 (not U.S. 33; U.S. 33 ends five blocks west of U.S. 1 northeast of downtown Richmond). Virginia 33 follows O Street/Leigh Street through downtown, not Broad Street. The pull-through panel features Interstate 64 west for traffic destined to Charlottesville. The three-mile overlap of Interstate 64 on the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike begins in one mile. Photo taken 10/02/04.
The ramp for Exit 74C splits into two parts. (1) The "east U.S. 33/Broad Street" ramp actually ends up at the intersection of 17th Street and Venable Street. U.S. 33 is erroneously signed here; it should be signed for Virginia 33 east. To reach Virginia 33 east, take Venable Street east one block to 18th Street (which is also U.S. 360 east) north. 18th Street intersects Virginia 33/O Street just east of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Bridge over Interstate 95. (2) The "west U.S. 33-250/Broad Street" ramp loops under the freeway, then turns south onto 14th Street. 14th Street in turn intersects Broad Street, which carries U.S. 250 into to downtown Richmond. This area is very confusing for the termini of the routes, and the signage is not always accurate. According to the Virginia Route Log and official state map, U.S. 250 sees its eastern terminus at the intersection of Broad Street and 21st Street (U.S. 60) just east of this interchange. The state highway version of 33 actually begins a good distance west of here, five blocks west of U.S. 1-301. Virginia 33 takes Leigh Street through downtown Richmond. Photo taken 06/02/03.
Interstate 95 northbound nears the Exit 75 off-ramp for Interstate 64 eastbound to Williamsburg and Norfolk. Interstate 64 curves northeast from Interstate 95 to U.S. 360 then southeast to Laburnum Avenue on the eastward trek to Richmond International Airport and junction Interstate 295. Leigh Street travels over Interstate 95 at the one-half mile overhead for Exit 75 otherwise. Photo taken 10/02/04.
A greenout covers Williamsburg with Virginia Beach on the Exit 75 overhead at the eastbound ramp for Interstate 64. Traffic using the one-lane ramp can also depart the freeway for 7th Street to Hospital Street, 5th Street, and U.S. 360 (17th Street). Interstate 64 reaches Virginia Beach 94 miles to the east. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Interstate 95 northbound pull-through panel attached to the 7th Street overpass within the Interstate 64 (Exit 75) interchange. A loop ramp carries 7th Street northbound drivers onto Interstate 95 northbound to the right. The high flyover in the background carries Interstate 64 eastbound drivers away from Interstate 95 south. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Now merged with Interstate 64 westbound, Interstate 95 northbound sees the first of two off-ramps depart via Exit 76A for Chamberlayne Avenue. Depicted here is the 1st Street overcrossing of the Interstate pair to the west of their merge at Exit 75. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Exit 76A departs Interstate 64 and 95 with two lanes to Chamberlayne Avenue. Chamberlayne Avenue becomes U.S. 1 and 301 (Belvidere Street) three blocks to the north. There is no direct access to Belvidere Street from the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike. There are on-ramps to Interstate 64 and 95 from U.S. 1 and 301 however. Photo taken 10/02/04.
The former mainline toll plaza of the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike was situated between the Exit 76A and 78 interchanges. The only noticeable reminder of the toll plaza is a large right of way for Interstates 64 & 95. Photo taken 08/08/04.
Pictured here is a 2.25 mile guide sign for the upcoming Interstate 64 westbound departure from Interstate 95 northbound and the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike. The Exit 79 interchange features a tri-level stack with Interstate 195 south. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Exit 78 involves the intersection of Virginia 161 (Boulevard) and Hermitage Road with Interstate 64 & 95. The northbound off-ramp dumps traffic onto Hermitage Road one block south of the six point intersection of Virginia 161 (Boulevard), Westwood Avenue, Hermitage Road, and Brookland Parkway. Photo taken 08/08/04.
A small guide sign is the first indication for Interstate 95 north & 64 westbound motorists of the pending split at junction Interstate 195 (Exit 79). The sign is posted ahead of the Exit 78 off-ramp for Virginia 161 (Boulevard) at the Sherwood Avenue under crossing. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Interstate 64 west & 95 north at the Hermitage Road off-ramp (Exit 78). Virginia 161 overtakes Hermitage Road from the Boulevard northward through the Ginter Park neighborhood of the city. The state highway interchanges with Interstate 95 again at Exit 80 adjacent to Joseph Bryan Park. Photo taken 10/02/04.
The Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike travels over Virginia 161 (Boulevard) 0.75 miles east of the Exit 79 split of Interstate 95 north from Interstate 64 south. Interstate 195 southbound sees its northern terminus at the same interchange complex. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Interstate 64 & 95 expand to four westbound lanes in anticipation of their partitioning. Interstate 64 exits the city en route to Charlottesville (pop. 45,049), Waynesboro (pop. 19,520), and Staunton (pop. 23,853) to the right. Interstate 195 travels southwestward to the Powhite Parkway (Virginia 76) and Downtown Richmond. Interstate 95 returns to a northerly trajectory to Ashland (pop. 6,619), Fredericksburg (pop. 19,279), and Washington. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Interstate 64 west & Interstate 195 southbound depart Interstate 95 northbound. Interstate 195 splits from Interstate 64 westbound in one half mile as Exit 186. The six lane freeway directly links Interstate 95 with the Downtown Expressway (Virginia 195) and the Powhite Parkway (Virginia 76). Virginia 76 continues southward to the toward Bon Air and Virginia 288. Photo taken 08/08/04.
Three lanes of Interstate 95 press northward to the Exit 80 loop ramp of Virginia 161 (Hermitage Road). Traffic slows on the westbound ramp to Interstate 64 westbound above. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Traffic from Interstate 195 northbound & 64 eastbound merge onto Interstate 95 northbound ahead of the Exit 80 ramp for Virginia 161. An auxiliary sign pictured here directs motorists to the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden via Virginia 161 north to Lakeside Avenue. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Northbound at the Bellevue Avenue overpass adjacent to Joseph Bryan Park. Virginia 161 (Hermitage Road) travels along the eastern boundary of the park between Westbrook Avenue, Interstate 95, and Bryan Park Avenue. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Situated overhead is the Hermitage Road (Virginia 161) intersection with Westbrook Avenue. Traffic departing Interstate 95 is directed onto Westbrook Avenue east of Virginia 161. Hermitage Road becomes Lakeside Avenue northward at the intersection of Bryan Park Avenue. Photo taken 10/02/04.
A second northbound only loop ramp (Exit 81) departs Interstate 95 between Interstate 64 & 195 and U.S. 301 (Chamberlayne Avenue). Exit 81 allows Interstate 95 northbound travelers access to U.S. 1 (Brook Road) above. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Interstate 95 northbound at the Exit 81 off-ramp for U.S. 1 (Brook Road). The ramp itself ties into the intersection of Wilmer and Seminary Avenues, one block east of U.S. 1 and one block west of U.S. 301. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Traffic to U.S. 301 & Virginia 2 (Chamberlayne Avenue) is afford a direct ramp via Exit 82. U.S. 301 & Virginia 2 travel northward through the Chamberlayne Heights community before intersecting the Exit 41 cloverleaf interchange of Interstate 295. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Virginia 73 (Parham Road) intersects Interstate 95 via a full cloverleaf interchange at Exits 83A/B. Parham Road loops between Virginia 150 (Chippenham Parkway) eastward to U.S. 301 & Virginia 2 (Chamberlayne Road) to the north of the Richmond city limits. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Interstate 95 northbound approaching Exit 83A for Parham Road eastbound. The arterial does not carry Virginia 73 eastward beyond the interchange with Interstate 95. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Exit 83A carries drivers onto Parham Road eastbound from Interstate 95 northbound. Parham Road ends two miles to the east at U.S. 301 & Virginia 2 (Chamberlayne Road) one quarter mile west of their interchange with Interstate 295 (Exit 41). Photo taken 10/02/04.
Virginia 73 westbound departs Interstate 95 northbound at Exit 83B. Parham Road skirts between the northern suburbs of Laurel (pop. 14,875) and Lakeside (pop. 11,157) between Interstate 95 and Interstate 64. Photo taken 08/08/04.
Northbound approaching the directional cloverleaf interchange of Interstate 295 (Exits 84A/B). Interstate 295 composes the eastern bypass of Richmond and Petersburg for Interstate 95 and the northern bypass of Richmond for Interstate 64. Thus the freeway sees control cities of Interstate 64 east & west and Interstate 95 south. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Exit 84A departs Interstate 95 northbound for Interstate 295 south. Although the northernmost 25 miles of Interstate 295 travels east-west, the freeway is signed as north and south. Interstate 295 meets Interstate 64 in ten miles at Exit 28. Photo taken 10/02/04.
A cloverleaf ramp carries traffic onto Interstate 295 northbound at Exit 84B. Traffic ascending onto Interstate 295 enters a collector/distributor roadway system through to the adjacent U.S. 1 (Brook Road) cloverleaf interchange. Interstate 95 loses a lane for the pending gain of two lanes from Interstate 295 north. Photo taken 10/14/01.
A second view of the Exit 84B ramp departure from Interstate 95 north. Interstate 295 concludes at Interstate 64 near Short Pump (pop. 182) in ten miles. The upcoming Exit 86 interchange with Virginia State Secondary 656 has undergone expansion to include two off-ramps from Interstate 95 instead of one. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Interstate 95 northbound curves over ramps from Interstate 295 to allow for a high speed connection between the two freeways. Two northbound lanes merge onto Interstate 95 from the left carrying Hampton Roads based traffic to Washington and points north. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Continuing northbound on Interstate 95 one half mile south of the Exit 86A/B junction with Virginia State Secondary 656 (Sliding Hill Road). Sliding Hill Road constitutes a divided highway from the interchange with Interstate 95 west to junction U.S. 1 (Brook Road) near the Virginia Center Commons Mall. Photo taken 10/02/04.
Construction expanded Exit 86 from a diamond into a partial-cloverleaf interchange. Virginia State Secondary 656 (Sliding Hill Road) travels between U.S. 1 and the Hanover County Airport within two miles of Interstate 95. Highlighted on the Exit 86 panel are the communities of Atlee and Elmont. Atlee Station Road branches south of Sliding Hill Road to Atlee and U.S. 301 to the east. Elmont resides northwest of U.S. 1 via Old Telegraph Road. Photo taken 10/02/04.
