Interstate 95 Southbound (Richmond Vicinity)

The Guide for Interstate 95 is split between five pages:

Interstate 95 southbound enters Hanover County at the community of Doswell. Virginia 30 intersects the freeway from Doswell and U.S. 1 eastward at Exit 98. The junction between Interstate 95 and Virginia 30 (Kings Dominion Boulevard) is also home to nearby Paramount's Kings Dominion Theme Park. Virginia 30 otherwise travels eastward into King William County to the town of West Point (pop. 2,866) at the mouth of the York River. A ramp to Kings Dominion exists from the Interstate 95 southbound on-ramp to Theme Park Drive. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Use Exit 98 to reach Paramount's Kings Dominion, which has attractions similar to a Six Flags Great America or Six Flags Magic Mountain. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Southbound Interstate 95 reaches Exit 98, Junction Virginia 30 to Doswell, West Point, and Paramount's Kings Dominion. Photo taken 06/01/04.
The next exit along southbound is Exit 92, Junction Virginia 54 west to Ashland and east to Hanover, one mile. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Use Virginia 54 west to reach U.S. 1 in Ashland and U.S. 33 near Montpelier. Virginia 54 extends east from this interchange to meet U.S. 301/Virginia 2 in Hanover, where Virginia 54 reaches its eastern terminus. This picture shows southbound Interstate 95 at Exit 92, Junction Virginia 54. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Interstate 95 southbound at the Ashcake Road overpass near Ashland (pop. 6,619). Displayed here is a sign bridge advising motorists of the eventual Exit 84 junction with Interstate 295, the Richmond Bypass. Exit 89 with Lewistown Road (Virginia State Secondary 802) occurs in just one mile near Hanover County Airport and Lewistown. Photo taken 06/01/04.

Southbound Interstate 95 reaches Exit 89, Junction Virginia Secondary 802/Lewistown Road. Virginia Secondary 802/Lewistown Road extends west to U.S. 1 just south of Ashland and east to connections with Virginia Secondary 657 and Virginia Secondary 656 near the airport. Use Virginia Secondary 657 east to connect with U.S. 301/Virginia 2 south of Hanover. Photo taken 06/01/04.
One of a handful of diagrammatical overheads to debut on Interstate 95 southbound in 2001 of the Interstate 95 and Interstate 295 layout of the Richmond and Petersburg metropolitan area. The overheads were installed to help direct additional through traffic away from downtown Richmond and Petersburg for North Carolina and points southward bound traffic. This particular assembly is situated within the Exit 89 diamond interchange at Lewistown Road. Photo taken 06/01/04.
The next exit along southbound is Exit 86, Junction Virginia Secondary 656/Sliding Hill Road to Atlee and Elmont, 1.50 miles. Photo taken 06/01/04.
This median sign advises southbound motorists of the pending left exit for Interstate 295 southbound. Traffic for Interstate 295 northwestbound should stay right. Photo taken 06/01/04.
In addition to providing a bypass around Richmond and Petersburg, Interstate 295 south (Exit 84A) also connects to Richmond International Airport (via Exit 28) and provides a more direct route to the southern Virginia cities of Hopewell and Emporia. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Meanwhile, Virginia Secondary 656/Sliding Hill Road is the next interchange, Exit 86. Use Virginia Secondary 656 southeast to Virginia Secondary 637 to reach Atlee. Virginia Secondary 656 extends west to U.S. 1/Brook Road. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Interstate 295 south provides no direct connection to Interstate 85 (without backtracking), so Interstate 95 is a better route to Interstate 85 south to Durham, Greensboro, Charlotte, Spartanburg, Greenville, and Atlanta. Photo taken 06/01/04.
A two-mile overhead of Interstate 295 south (Exit 84A) is placed between Exits 89 and 86 (Sliding Hill Road). The ramp onto Interstate 295 southbound departs well ahead of the actual Interstate 95 junction with the north Richmond Bypass. The control city of Miami, Florida (pop. 362,470) was covered up on signs related to Exit 84 in 2001. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Southbound Interstate 95 reaches Exit 84, Junction Virginia Secondary 656/Sliding Hill Road. To reach destinations located along Interstate 64 eastbound, a faster and more direct route is Interstate 295 south via Exit 84A. Note that a second diagrammatical sign (identical to the earlier overhead sign) has been placed in the median for Interstates 95 and 295. Photo taken 06/01/04.
These signs, mounted on the Virginia Secondary 656/Sliding Hill Road overpass, define the left lane as the exit to Interstate 295 south and the right lane as the exit to Interstate 295 northwest. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Now south of Exit 86, Interstate 95 prepares to part with Exit 84A travel lanes onto Interstate 295 southbound. The junction features a left-hand off-ramp to the east Richmond Bypass. Ramps to Interstate 295 southbound feature a gradual sweeping curve to allow motorists to maintain freeway speeds. A left-hand merge occurs at Interstate 295 where Exit 84A ends. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Southbound Interstate 95 approaches Exits 84A-B, Junction Interstate 295. Prior to the completion of Interstate 295 south of Interstate 64, all through traffic used Interstate 95/Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike. With the diversion of through traffic onto Interstate 295 and a new James River bridge, Interstate 95 has seen a reduction in through traffic. According to old maps, Interstate 295 was originally planned as a beltway designation around Richmond. Today, the beltway is nearly complete, with Virginia 288 and Virginia 895 completing the route around the capital city (with connections to Virginia 288 via Interstate 64 and Interstate 95). Photo taken 06/01/04.
The next sign bridge of Exit 84A features trailblazers for Interstate 64 east and Interstate 85 south. Unfortunately for motorists wishing to access Interstate 85, there is no direct connection from Interstate 295 southbound. Traffic is advised to remain on the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike through Richmond and Petersburg to access the southbound beginning of the Virginia to Alabama route. Interstate 295 southbound provides a through route for Hampton Roads traffic via Interstate 64 east. The north Richmond bypass junctions with Interstate 64 in 15 miles to the east. Interstate 295 and Interstate 95 south of Petersburg features the control city of Rocky Mount, North Carolina (pop. 55,893). The largest city on Interstate 95 between Richmond/Petersburg and Jacksonville, Florida (pop. 735,617) is that of Fayetteville, North Carolina (pop. 121,015). Savannah, Georgia (pop. 131,510) is slightly larger than Fayetteville but is not directly on the path of Interstate 95. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Interstate 295 southbound traffic departs Interstate 95 at Exit 84A. The left-hand panel sees the removal of Miami, Florida as a secondary control point in 2001. Miami, Florida remains as the second control city for Interstate 95 southbound at the Interstate 85 split (Exit 51). It is unknown if the usage of the city was for novelty purposes or because VDOT wanted to feature the endpoint of Interstate 95. The city of Atlanta, Georgia is also placed as a control city for Interstate 85, second to that of Durham, North Carolina. The left lane exits only onto southbound Interstate 295, while the main lanes continue south along Interstate 95 toward Richmond. Photo taken 06/01/04.
The next ramp is a right exit from southbound Interstate 95 onto Interstate 295 northwest to Interstate 64 west. Interstate 64 serves destinations such as Charlottesville, the University of Virginia, Skyline Drive, Waynesboro, Staunton, and the Blue Ridge Mountains. From there, Interstate 64 proceeds into West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois before culminating in Missouri. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Southbound Interstate 95 reaches Exit 84, Junction Interstate 295 northwest to Interstate 64 near Short Pump. Photo taken 06/01/04.
The next exit along southbound is Exits 83B-A, Junction Virginia 73/Parham Road, one mile. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Use Virginia 73/Parham Road west (Exit 83B) to Laurel and Interstate 64 Exit 181. This interchange marks the northeastern terminus of Virginia 73. As for Parham Road east (Exit 83A), it is a fairly short route that connects Interstate 95 with U.S. 301/Virginia 2/Chamberlayne Avenue. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Southbound Interstate 95 reaches Exit 83B, Junction Virginia 73/Parham Road west to Laurel. Photo taken 06/01/04.
The second half of this cloverleaf interchange is Exit 83B, Parham Road west to U.S. 301/Virginia 2. U.S. 301/Virginia 2 head north to a junction with Interstate 295, then onward to Hanover and Bowling Green. Photo taken 06/01/04.
The first interchange south of Interstate 295 on Interstate 95 is that of Exit 82. Here U.S. 301 (Chamberlayne Avenue) touches the Interstate 95 from the east before entering the city of Richmond street grid. U.S. 301 merges with U.S. 1 via Azalea Avenue and Brook Road one half mile to the south. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Summertime view of the Exit 82 one-mile sign bridge. Featured to the left is a three-mile advisory sign of the upcoming Exit 79 junction with Interstate 64 and Interstate 195 south. There Interstate 95 southbound merges with Interstate 64 eastbound to form the beginnings of the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike. Interstate 195 stems from the junction southwestward as a 3.24-mile freeway spur into the central business district of Richmond. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Interstate 95 yields Exit 79 to Interstate 64 west (Charlottesville) and Interstate 195 south (Downtown) at the Bellvue Avenue overpass to Joseph Bryan Park. The ramp of Exit 79 splits to the west at a tri-level stack interchange. Interstate 195 directly ties into the Virginia 76 Powhite Parkway. Photo taken 06/01/04.
The next interchange along southbound is the split of Interstate 95: south Interstate 95/east Interstate 64 (left lanes) and Interstate 195/Downtown Expressway (right lanes) to Interstate 64 west to Charlottesville (right lanes). Photo taken 06/01/04.
Interstate 195, a north-south spur route from Interstate 95 to downtown Richmond, provides connections to a variety of freeways and parkways, including Virginia 76/Powhite Parkway and Virginia 195/Downtown Expressway. Virginia 76 and Virginia 195 are both toll roads. Use Virginia 76 southwest to reach to U.S. 60/Midlothian Turnpike, Virginia 288 beltway, and U.S. 360/Hull Street. Photo taken 06/01/04.
The right lane is exit only for Interstate 64 west. As noted earlier, Interstate 64 is a major route across central Virginia, and it is mostly directed accessed from southbound Interstate 95 via Interstate 295 northwest. However, this ramp is available for those who missed the connection or are approaching from the vicinity of Parham Road. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Southbound Interstate 95 reaches Exit 79, Junction Interstate 195 south and Interstate 64 west. Although numbered with an odd prefix, Interstate 195 provides a limited access connection back to Interstate 95 via the tolled Virginia 195/Downtown Expressway. Virginia 195 is administered by the Richmond Metropolitan Authority and follows the northeast edge of the James River to link Interstate 195/Virginia 76 with Interstate 95 southbound. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Upon leaving the interchange for Exit 79, Interstates 64-95 enter the city of Richmond, home to 197,800 people per the 2000 Census. With over 43 inches of precipitation per year, Richmond is surrounded by forest, wetlands, and pastoral areas. A large river passes along the southwestern edge of downtown (James River), and this river forms one of the major tributaries of Chesapeake Bay. Meanwhile, now that Interstate 95 south and Interstate 64 east are merged together, they will use Interstate 95's mileposts and exit numbers. The first exit from this joint freeway is Exit 78, Junction Virginia 161/Boulevard, one-half mile. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Virginia 161 follows the Boulevard south, skirting the western edge of downtown Richmond before crossing the James River via the tolled Boulevard Bridge. From there, Virginia 161 follows Western Hills Boulevard, Belt Boulevard, and Bells Boulevard southeast to rejoin Interstate 95 at Exit 69 (just north of the Virginia 150/Virginia 895 interchange). Photo taken 06/01/04.
Eastbound Interstate 64 and Southbound Interstate 95 reach Exit 78, Junction Virginia 161/Boulevard. Looking north, Virginia 161 connects to Hermitage Road and Hilliard Road before ending at U.S. 1/Brook Road near Belmont Park Golf Course. Photo taken 06/01/04.
To reach Richmond International Airport, use Exit 75, Interstate 64 east. Photo taken 06/01/04.
This mileage sign provides the distance to the next three exits: Exit 76B, Junction U.S. 1-301/Belvidere Road; Exit 75, Junction Interstate 64 east to the airport; and Exit 74C, Junction U.S. 250/Broad Street to Virginia 33/Leigh Street and Nine Mile Road. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Use Interstate 64 east (Exit 76B) to reach Williamsburg, Jamestown, Norfolk, Hampton Roads, and Virginia Beach. Photo taken 06/01/04.
A late day sun glare partially obscures this sign, which is the exit from southbound Interstate 95/eastbound Interstate 64 to U.S. 1/U.S. 301/Belvidere Street. Northeast of this interchange, U.S. 1 follows Chamberlayne Avenue and Brook Road, while U.S. 301 heads north on Chamberlayne Road, picking up Virginia 2 in Chamberlayne Heights. Photo taken 06/01/04.
After Exit 76B-A, Junction U.S. 1-301/Belvidere Street, Interstates 64-95 next approach Exit 75, where the two routes divide. Interstate 64 continues southeast toward Hampton Roads, while Interstate 95 will pass through downtown Richmond and then continue south toward North Carolina and South Carolina. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Since Interstate 64 serves so many destinations in the Hampton Roads area, many of the cities need to be repeated on separate signs. In addition, keep in mind that the airport is reached via Interstate 64 east. Photo taken 06/01/04.
A ramp from Exit 75 connects Interstates 64-95 to Third Street and downtown. Use Third Street southwest to Virginia 33/Leigh Street east to the Coliseum. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Southbound Interstate 95/eastbound Interstate 64 prepare to split. The two right lanes access Interstate 64, while the three left lanes continue south along Interstate 95. Photo taken 06/01/04.
This view of the two lane transition ramp from Interstate 95 south to Interstate 64 also shows the split off for the ramp to Third Street (just beyond the First Street overpass). Photo taken 06/01/04.
Immediately after Interstates 64 and 95 split, the next exit along southbound is Exit 74C, Junction U.S. 250/Broad Street. This exit indirectly connects to U.S. 360/17th Street and 18th Street Couplet, U.S. 60/Virginia 5/Main Street, and Virginia 33/Leigh Street/Nine Mile Road. Unfortunately, this sign incorrectly states that this exit connects to U.S. 33, but that is untrue. U.S. 33 reaches its southeastern terminus at the intersection of Broad Street and Hancock Street, which is the same point where Virginia 33 reaches its northwestern terminus. Together, U.S. 33 and Virginia 33 form one route that follows a variety of city streets through Richmond, but the conversion point from U.S. to state route is well to the northwest of Exit 74C. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Following Exit 74C/Junction U.S. 250/Broad Street is Exit 74B, Franklin Street, which runs east-west parallel to U.S. 60/Main Street/Cary Street couplet. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Southbound Interstate 95 reaches Exit 74C, Junction U.S. 250/Broad Street. Use U.S. 250/Broad Street northwest to reach the state capital, city hall, Virginia Commonwealth University, and U.S. 33. Use U.S. 250/Broad Street southeast to reach U.S. 360 at 17th and 18th Streets and U.S. 60 at 21st Street. The intersection of Broad Street and 21st Street is where U.S. 250 reaches its southeastern terminus. U.S. 60 takes over Broad Street from that point southeast until it reaches Chimborazo Park. Photo taken 06/01/04.
The second to last downtown area exit of Richmond departs Interstate 95 to Franklin Street (Exit 74B). U.S. 250 (Broad Street) travels over the freeway, linked to Interstate 95 by ramps related to Exit 74C. There is access to Virginia 33/Leigh Street (extension of U.S. 33) via Exit 74C. The eastern terminus of Virginia 195 (Downtown Expressway) occurs in one half mile (Exit 74A). Photo taken 06/01/04.
Interstate 95 (Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike) elevates high over the north banks of the James River to junction with the Downtown Expressway toll highway of Virginia 195. The east-west roadway travels through downtown Richmond to Interstate 195 and the Powhite Parkway (Virginia 76). The interchange between the two highways resides at the north end of the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike crossing of the James River. Thus the interchange is stacked. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Interstate 95 descends from the James River bridge into a trumpet interchange with Maury Street (Exit 73). Exit 73 links the freeway with 4th and Maury Streets, four blocks to the east of U.S. 360 (Hull Street). A mileage sign is placed to the left in lieu of a standard pull-through panel. Photo taken 06/01/03.
The final Richmond city interchange of Interstate 95 occurs at the southern terminus of Virginia 161 (Exit 69). Virginia 161 scoots through western reaches of the city along Boulevard, Park Drive, Westover Hills Boulevard, East Belt Road, and Bells Road among other surface streets in Richmond (pop. 197,790). The state highway sees two other interchanges with Interstate 95 at Exit 78 and 80. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Interstate 95 southbound, one-half mile out from the Exit 69 trumpet interchange. Paralleling the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike are the frontage roads of Commerce Road (southbound side) and Deepwater Terminal Road (northbound side). Bells Road (Virginia 161) ends at Commerce Road just north of the Exit 69 ramps. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Interstate 95 southbound at the southern terminus of Virginia 161 (Exit 69). Virginia 161 utilizes Commerce Road for one third of a mile between the Exit 69 trumpet and Walmsley Boulevard to Bells Road. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Attached to the Exit 69 trumpet interchange overpass is the 1.25 mile guide sign of Exit 67 (Virginia 150). Interstate 95 leaves the Richmond city limits and enters Chesterfield County between Virginia 161 and the southern terminus of Virginia 150. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Drawing to within 0.75 miles of Virginia 150 northbound (Exit 67) on Interstate 95 south. Coming into view are flyovers associated with the majestic Virginia 895 (Pocahontas Parkway) interchange (Exit 67A on northbound). Photo taken 06/01/03.
Southbound at the northbound beginning of Virginia 150 (Chippenham Parkway). The Chippenham Parkway composes a four to six lane freeway between the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike and Forest Hill Avenue (Virginia State Secondary 683) near Gravel Hill and Oxford. The highway creates a southwestern belt line between Interstate 95 and the Powhite Parkway (Virginia 76). Photo taken 06/01/03.
The scene of Interstate 95 south at Exit 67 before interchange construction of Virginia 895 east was complete. Virginia 150 provides direct connections with U.S. 60 (Midlothian Turnpike) and U.S. 360 (Hull Street Road) along the Richmond city/Chesterfield county line. An upcoming exits sign features distances to Exits 64, 62, and 61. Photo taken 10/14/01.
The Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike enters the Virginia 150 north and Virginia 895 east stack interchange. There is no flyover from Interstate 95 south to Virginia 895 eastbound at the present time. The reason for the omission involves a low expected traffic demand and high cost benefit for that particular segment of the interchange. Construction costs for the connection run high because of the magnitude of a flyover needed to connect with the adjacent high level Pocahontas Parkway bridge over the James River (Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge). However, by 2010 or later, as traffic demands increase, it is likely that such a connection will be built. Photos taken 06/01/03.
Interstate 95 maintains six overall lanes throughout the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike segment. Depicted here is the one-mile sign bridge of the Willis Road (Virginia State Secondary 613) diamond interchange (Exit 64). Photo taken 06/01/03.
Interstate 95 nears Exit 64 (Willis Road). Virginia State Secondary 613 spurs eastward from U.S. 1 and U.S. 301 (Jefferson Davis Highway) to the Bellwood Manor community east of the turnpike. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Southbound at the Exit 64 diamond interchange. The upcoming exits sign over the mainline displays distances to Virginia 288 north (Exit 63), Virginia 10 (Exit 61) and Woods Edge Road (Exit 58). Virginia 288 forms the western Richmond bypass between the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike and Interstate 64. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Virginia 288 sees its northbound beginning from the Exit 62 trumpet interchange of Interstate 95. Virginia 288 travels west to Chesterfield (pop. 3,558) and U.S. 360 (Hull Street Road) and Virginia 76 (Powhite Parkway). Construction is well underway however to extend the freeway all the way to Interstate 64 in Goochland County. Completion of the west Richmond bypass is slated for mid 2004. Photo taken 08/08/02.
Southbound on Interstate 95 in downtown Petersburg (pop. 33,740). Departing the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike in this scene is Exit 52 to Wythe & Washington Streets. The east-west surface boulevards compose the north and southbound directions of U.S. 301 between Crater Road and Jefferson Street. Ahead Interstate 95 parts from the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike at Exit 51 (Interstate 85 south). The Exit 51 overhead features the long distance control cities of Durham, North Carolina (pop. 187,035) and Atlanta, Georgia (pop. 416,474). Photo taken 10/14/01.
Interstate 95 southbound at the Washington Street overpass. The north-south freeway reduces to four lanes south of the Interstate 85 northern terminus (Exit 51). Featured on the Exit 51 guide sign are the Virginia control points of Blackstone (pop. 3,675) for U.S. 460 west and South Hill (pop. 4,403) where Interstate 85 junctions with U.S. 58. Photo taken 10/14/01.
Interstate 85 southbound departs with the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike from Interstate 95 at Exit 51. U.S. 460 enters the fray from Interstate 95 via County Drive (Exit 50A) to overlap with Interstate 85 for seven miles to Exit 61. Miami, Florida reappears as a second control city of Interstate 95 for the second time in Petersburg at the Interstate 85 split. The south Florida city is over 900 miles to the south. Photo taken 10/14/01.
Traffic from Interstate 295 southbound merges onto Interstate 95 south one mile ahead of the Exit 45 diamond interchange with U.S. 301 (Crater Road). Photo taken 06/02/03.
Interstate 95 maintains just four lanes between Interstate 295 and the North Carolina state line. The four lane segment subsists all the way to Georgia at present. U.S. 301 shadows Interstate 95 from Petersburg southward in some capacity to Santee, South Carolina (pop. 449). Photo taken 06/02/03.
Exit 45 departs Interstate 95 for U.S. 301 (Crater Road). U.S. 301 never strays to far from Interstate 95 in southern Virginia, often acting as a frontage road to the north-south freeway. Thus Exit 45 is one of several interchanges to directly access or indirectly interact with the federal highway. Photo taken 06/02/03.
