A second look at the Exit 47 overheads pictured above. Note that the words "U.S. Route 1" were scraped off to make room for Interstate 195/Baltimore-Washington International Airport. As noted previously, this sign was originally installed prior to the completion of Interstate 195 over the Patapsco River (between U.S. 1 and Maryland 295). Once it was complete, the sign was altered to reflect its extension to the airport. The Clearview sign in the background references the northbound connection to the UMBC campus and CCBC Catonsville. Photo taken 12/18/07.
This gore point sign splits traffic between east and west Interstate 195. As noted earlier, Interstate 195 is not signed westbound from here, but there are reassurance and trailblazer shields along eastbound Maryland 166/Rolling Road at the western terminus of Interstate 195. Photo taken 12/18/07.
Interstate 95 southbound reassurance shield posted after the partial "Y" interchange with Interstate 895 south. Interstate 895 enters the freeway from alongside the Patapsco River and Baltimore Highlands. Photo taken 07/11/05.
Nearing the Montgomery Road overpass on Interstate 95 southbound. An original button copy mileage sign highlights the distances to Laurel, Washington, and Richmond. Photo taken 12/26/06.
Interstate 95 skims the eastern reaches of Howard County from the Patapso River southward to the Patuxent River near Laurel. The first three countywide interchanges join the freeway with the Elkridge, Jessup, and Savage areas. Photo taken 12/26/06.
One half mile north of the Exit 43B/A directional-cloverleaf interchange with Maryland 100, an east-west freeway linking Interstate 95 with Ellicott City and Glen Burnie. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Maryland 100 is a freeway between Maryland 607 at Pasadena in the southeast and the U.S. 29 freeway in the northwest. Use Exit 43B to take Maryland 100 northwest to Columbia and Ellicott City. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Southbound Interstate 95 at Exit 43A, Junction Maryland 100 southeast to Severn, Southgate, Glen Burnie, Lake Shore, and Gibson Island. Maryland 100 provides connections to U.S. 1, Maryland 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway), and Interstate 97. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Travelers next encounter the Exit 41 directional-cloverleaf interchange with Maryland 175 (Little Patuxent Parkway). Maryland 175 constitutes an expressway like road between U.S. 29 and U.S. 1 (Washington Boulevard). The highway serves the nearby Columbia Gateway area, a large office park area bound by Interstate 95, Little Patuxent parkway and Snowden River Parkway. Photo taken 12/26/06.
The carriageways of Interstate 95 separate briefly on the approach to the Exit 41B/A off-ramp to Maryland 175 (Little Patuxent Parkway). Maryland 175 south meets U.S. 1 nearby at Waterloo before crossing into Anne Arundel County en route to Fort George G. Meade and Odenton. Jessup lies east along Maryland 175 and south along U.S. 1. Photo taken 12/26/06.
Maryland 175 (Little Patuxent Parkway) north interchanges with Columbia Gateway Drive and Snowden River Parkway within two miles. The state highway continues northwest to junction U.S. 29 at Columbia. Photo taken 07/11/05.
Exit 41 carries drivers bound for both Maryland 175 north and south in unison. Maryland 175 travels overall between Maryland 3 at Millersville and the U.S. 29 freeway near the Columbia town center. Photo taken 07/11/05.
Another in a series of original mileage signs listing the distance to Richmond. A narrow forested median again separates the two directions of Interstate 95 between Exits 41 and 38. Photo taken 12/26/06.
Meeting the freeway next is the Maryland 32 freeway at Exits 38B/A. Maryland 32 extends eastward from Interstate 95 through Fort George G. Meade and Odenton and west to Simpsonville. Photo taken 12/26/06.
Interests to Columbia depart Interstate 95 southbound via Exit 38B (Maryland 32 west). Maryland 32 travels 1.5 miles west to Broken Land Parkway and three miles to the U.S. 29 freeway south of Columbia. The freeway continues west from U.S. 29 to Maryland 108 (Clarksville Pike) at Clarksville; Maryland 32 downgrades into a two-lane highway at that point and turns north to West Friendship, junction Interstate 70 & U.S. 40, and Sykesville. Photo taken 07/11/05.
Guilford Road passes over Interstate 95 southbound ahead of the Exit 38B ramp departure onto Maryland 32 west. Maryland 32 east continues through the Savage and Jessup areas before entering Fort George G. Meade. Interests to the Laurel Racecourse should use the freeway east to junction U.S. 1 (Washington Boulevard) south. Photo taken 12/26/06.
Maryland 32 partitions to allow for two left-hand ramps to Interstate 95 at Exit 38A. Exit 38A loops onto the eastbound freeway for the 5.5-mile drive to Fort Meade. Beyond the government complex is Odenton and the junction with Interstate 97 and Maryland 3 at Millersville. Photo taken 12/26/06.
Interstate 95 continues one mile south to the Maryland Welcome Center and rest area in Howard County. Vollmerhausen Road passes over the freeway near the one-mile sign. Photo taken 07/11/05.
Interstate 95 passes through Savage Park and across the Middle Patuxent River on the one half mile approach to the Maryland Welcome Center and rest area. Photo taken 07/11/05.
Southbound at the rest area, 1.25 miles north of the Exit 35B/A full-cloverleaf interchange with Maryland 212 (Scaggsville Road). Maryland 216 stems northward from Maryland 198 in Laurel to Interstate 95. Photo taken 12/26/06.
Button copy guide sign for the Exit 35B off-ramp to Maryland 216 (Scaggsville Road) westbound. Maryland 216 continues 2.5 miles west to junction U.S. 29 (Columbia Pike) at Scaggsville. The state highway follows a relatively new four-lane highway from the freeway to the Exit 13 interchange with U.S. 29. Old Maryland 216 is now signed as Maryland 983. Photo taken 07/11/05.
Exit 35B departs Interstate 95 southbound for Maryland 216 (Scaggsville Road) westbound to Scaggsville, Fulton, and Mooresfield. Maryland 216 ends four miles west of Scaggsville at junction Maryland 108 (Clarksville Pike) in Highland. Photo taken 12/26/06.

Crossing the Patuxent River into Prince George's County, Interstate 95 sees its first sign of junction Interstate 495 (Capital Beltway). The merge with Washington's beltway occurs seven miles south of the county line. Photo taken 12/26/06.
Posted near the Brooklyn Bridge Road overpass is the one-mile guide sign for junction Maryland 198 (Exit 33). Maryland 198 follows Gorman Avenue east into Laurel and Sandy Spring Road west into Burtonsville Montgomery County. Photo taken 12/26/06.
One half mile north of the Exit 33B off-ramp onto Maryland 198 (Sandy Spring Road) west to Burtonsville. Maryland 198 consists of a multi-lane divided highway west from Laurel to junction U.S. 29 (Columbia Pike) at Burtonsville. The state highway narrows onto Spencerville Road on the rive west from Rusty Acres to Browns Corner and junction Maryland 650 (New Hampshire Avenue). Photo taken 12/26/06.
A three-quarter cloverleaf interchange joins Interstate 95 with Maryland 198 (Sandy Spring Road) at Exits 33B/A. Directional ramps directly connect Maryland 198 (Gorman Avenue) west with Interstate 95 south from Laurel. The state highway partitions into a one-way street couplet of Gorman Avenue (east) and Talbott Avenue (west) through downtown Laurel. Photo taken 12/26/06.
Maryland 198 (Gorman Avenue) ventures 0.75 miles east from Exit 33A to junction Maryland 216 (7th Street) in Laurel and 7.7 miles overall to its end at junction Maryland 32 at Fort George G. Meade. New collector/distributor roadways will replace the current movements at Maryland 198 and continue southward to a new interchange with Contee Road. Work on the new interchange and c/d roadways is planned for 2009 to late 2011. Photo taken 12/26/06.
Approaching junction Maryland 212 (Exit 29B/A) on Interstate 95 southbound near Ammendale and Calverton. The forthcoming full-cloverleaf interchange lies at Little Paint Branch Park. Work begins in 2008 on a widening of Interstate 95 that entails the building of collector/distributor roadways for Exits 29B/A and the future Inter-County Connector toll road (Maryland 200). Construction is expected to last through 2011 on the easternmost segment of Maryland 200, which will link Interstate 95 with U.S. 1 (Baltimore Avenue) to the east and Interstate 370 at Rockville to the west. Photo taken 12/26/06.
Longer distance travelers bound for Interstate 66 in Virginia are advised to take Interstate 495 west (Outer) into Northern Virginia. Interstate 495 is an extremely busy route between Kensington and Tysons Corner, Virginia. Work will begin soon (2008 or so) on an expansion project in Fairfax County to construct High-Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes. Photo taken 12/26/06.
Nearing the original Exit 29B off-ramp to Maryland 212 (Powder Mill Road) west. Maryland 212 arcs westward from U.S. 1 (Baltimore Avenue) at Beltsville to Knollwood, Adelphi, Lewisdale, and north Washington, DC. Photo taken 07/11/05.
Exit 29B leaves Interstate 95 southbound for Maryland 212 (Powder Mill Road) west at Calverton. A directional-cloverleaf interchange will be built between the freeway and the Inter-County Connector (Maryland 200) at this junction. Photo taken 07/11/05.
Maryland 212 (Powder Mill Road) continues east from Interstate 95 and Calverton to junction U.S. 1 and Maryland 201 at Beltsville. Maryland 201 begins along Edmonston Avenue south and heads to Greenbelt. The final phase of the Inter-County Connector Project will see the six-lane toll road continue east of Interstate 95 as a four-lane freeway spur with an interchange at Virginia Manor Road and an signalized end at junction U.S. 1 (Baltimore Avenue). Photo taken 07/11/05.
Immediately after departing the Maryland 212 interchange, Interstate 95 travelers are advised to move into the left-hand lanes for the continuation of the Interstate mainline onto the Capital Beltway east/south. Photo taken 07/11/05.
Interstate 95 partitions into a pair of two-lane ramps for the Capital Beltway Inner and Outer Loops. The ramp onto Interstate 495 west is signed as Exit 27 and features a connection to the Exit 25 interchange with U.S. 1 (Baltimore Avenue). Interstate 95 mainline drivers cannot access the U.S. 1 collector/distributor roadway safely as the freeway merges onto Interstate 495 east (Inner) from the left-hand side. Photo taken 07/11/05.
Interstate 95 was planned to continue southward through the heart of Washington, D.C. at one point. A remnant of this plan is a freeway spur from this interchange southward to a park and ride facility. In addition to providing a loop ramp onto Interstate 495 east for U.S. 1 (Exit 27) and a park and ride facility, the freeway spur is also the location of a truck weigh station. Irregardless of the direction intended, all trucks must use Exit 27 to the scales at the south end of the freeway stub when active. Photo taken 07/11/05.
Continuing to within one half mile of the Interstate 95 ramp split for the Capital Beltway. Interstate 495 west serves the northern suburbs of Takoma Park, Kensington, Bethesda, Garrett Park, and Silver Spring. The freeway splits with Interstate 270 at Exit 35 and crosses into Northern Virginia between Exits 41 and 43. Photo taken 07/11/05.
Attached to the Cherry Hill Road overpass are overheads featuring large shields for Interstates 95 and 495. Interstate 95 originally was intended to head south into Washington, leaving Interstate 495 to travel the beltway on its own. When it was realized that this plan would not come to fruition, Interstate 95 was relocated from the Henry G. Shirley Memorial Highway (Interstate 395) to the eastern half of the Capital Beltway. During that switch, Interstate 495 was decommissioned on the eastern half so that Interstate 95 would travel it solo. In 1991, Interstate 495 was restored to the eastern half of the beltway, now sharing pavement with Interstate 95 between College Park and Springfield, Virginia. Photo taken 07/11/05.
Drivers partition between the Interstate 95 southbound mainline that merges onto Interstate 495 east and Exit 27 to Interstate 495 west and U.S. 1. Interstate 95 south & 495 east travel through nearby College Park and Greenbelt before turning south to New Carrollton, Glenarden and junction U.S. 50 (Interstate 595). The tandem cross the Potomac River into Virginia in 27 miles. Photo taken 07/11/05.
The Exit 27 gore point features an Interstate 495 west shield. Overall a directional-cloverleaf interchange joins both highways. The interchange features full access between both roads due to the park and ride and weigh station facilities at the south end. Photo taken 07/11/05.
Exit 27 widens to three lanes with a left-hand off-ramp to the park and ride lot, the weigh station, and loop ramp onto Interstate 495 east for the Exit 25 collector/distributor roadway to U.S. 1 (Baltimore Avenue). Photo taken 07/11/05.
| Traffic merges onto Interstate 495 westbound ahead of the Montgomery County line and junction Maryland 650 at Oakview Park. The left-hand ramp continues along the Interstate 95 freeway spur to the aforementioned facilities. Nearby U.S. 1 travels through College Park, serving interests to the University of Maryland campus.
