Interstate 195

Interstate 195 East
The first reassurance shield along eastbound Interstate 195 is located immediately after the onramp from Maryland 166/Rolling Road. Here the highway is only one lane, but it widens to two lanes upon receiving traffic from the Park and Ride. Photo taken 06/07/04.
Eastbound Interstate 195 approaches its first exit, Exit 4, Junction Interstate 95 north to Baltimore and south to Washington. Interstate 195 generally heads southeast from here, and exit numbers descend from Exit 4 to Exit 1, which is contrary to typical exit numbering policies. The exit numbers should ascend as one travels east. It might be because at one time, Interstate 195 was signed as north-south, but we have no evidence to prove that. Photo taken 06/07/04.
Use Interstate 195 east to reach Baltimore-Washington International Airport, which has its own logo/shield as shown on this sign. Photo taken 06/07/04.
Eastbound Interstate 195 reaches Exit 4B, Junction Interstate 95 south to Washington, followed by Exit 4A, Junction Interstate 95 north to Baltimore. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Interstate 195 is the spur from Interstate 95 southeast to Baltimore-Washington Airport, following the original corridor of Maryland 166 until reaching U.S. 1. This photo shows the transition from southbound Interstate 95 onto eastbound Interstate 195, with a view of the ramp from eastbound Interstate 195 to northbound Interstate 95. The next exit is Exit 3, Junction U.S. 1. Photos taken 06/22/00 and 06/07/04.
The next reassurance shield along eastbound is located after traffic merges onto Interstate 195 east from Interstate 95. Interstate 195 was signed on various maps through the 1980s, but the highway may have been signed in the field as Maryland 166 northwest of U.S. 1 and as Maryland 46 southeast of Maryland 295/Baltimore-Washington Parkway. There was no connection between Maryland 166 and Maryland 46 until a bridge was built over the Patapsco River to link the two in June 1990. At that time, Interstate 195 was designated along the entire route, incorporating the south end of Maryland 166 and all of former Maryland 46. Photo taken 05/01/04.
U.S. 1, Washington Boulevard, is the next exit along eastbound Interstate 195 (Exit 3). Photo taken 05/01/04.

Eastbound Interstate 195 reaches Exit 3, Junction U.S. 1/Washington Boulevard. The next exit along eastbound is Exit 2, Junction Maryland 295/Baltimore-Washington Parkway, one and one-half miles. Photo taken 05/01/04.
U.S. 1 shields posted at the end of the Exit 3 off-ramp from Interstate 195 eastbound. A five-ramp partial-cloverleaf interchange facilitates the movements between the freeway and Washington Boulevard below. U.S. 1 travels between Elkridge and Halethorpe within the immediate vicinity of junction Interstate 195. Photo taken 10/10/04.
This Interstate 195 shield is located after Exit 3 just prior to the Patapsco River Bridge (visible ahead). Photo taken 05/01/04.
A traffic alert was in effect at the time this photo was taken, and all vehicles entering Baltimore-Washington International Airport were subject to search. Interstate 195 crosses the Patapsco River. Photo taken 05/01/04.
Maryland 295/Baltimore-Washington Parkway is a state-maintained freeway from Maryland 175 north to Interstate 95 in Baltimore. It generally meets Interstate standards with the exception of substandard merge areas and some sight distance issues. South of Maryland 175, the Parkway is managed by the National Park Service, and it does not officially carry any route designation. Some maps show it as Route 295, but it is only referred to as the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. Photo taken 05/01/04.
Eastbound Interstate 195 meets Maryland 295/Baltimore-Washington Parkway south at Exit 2A; the next exit accesses Maryland 295/Baltimore-Washington Parkway north to Baltimore. Photo taken 05/01/04.
The final exit on eastbound Interstate 195 is the Airport Loop, Exit 1/Junction Maryland 170/Aviation Boulevard, one mile. All trucks must exit at Exit 1. Photo taken 05/01/04.
Eastbound Interstate 195 reaches Exit 2A, Junction Maryland 295/Baltimore-Washington Parkway north to Baltimore. Between 2003 and 2004, the green pull-through sign was replaced with a blue guide sign. Photos taken 06/02/03 and 05/01/04.
The Airport Loop consists of Maryland 170/Aviation Boulevard, Maryland 162/Aviation Boulevard, and Maryland 176/Dorsey Road. Most airport services may be accessed via this loop. Photo taken 05/01/04.
Maryland 170 follows the northwestern edge of the Airport Loop, then continues north to meet Maryland 2 in Baltimore. Looking south, Maryland 170 leads to the multi-modal railroad station and rental car facility (via Maryland 995) and then south to Severn and Odenton via Telegraph Road. Photo taken 05/01/04.
At the time this photo was taken, motorists were advised to take Exit 1A/Maryland 170 north to reach car rentals. That has since changed with the opening of the new rental car location at the transit station at Maryland 995 (see replacement photo). Photos taken 06/02/03 and 05/01/04.
Eastbound Interstate 195 at Exit 1B, Junction Maryland 170/Aviation Boulevard south to Odenton. The next exit is Exit 1A, Junction Maryland 170/Aviation Boulevard north to Linthicum. All remaining lanes that do not exit continue straight ahead into the airport. Photos taken 05/01/04 & 10/13/04.
Eastbound Interstate 195 at Exit 1A, Junction Maryland 170/Aviation Boulevard north. Photo taken 05/01/04.
This picture shows the gore point for Exit 1A, which has a sharp turn/loop ramp to reach northbound Maryland 170. Interstate 195 ends just ahead, once it enters the airport proper. Photo taken 05/01/04.
Entering the Baltimore-Washington International Airport grounds and roadway partition for parking and the terminal. Black guide signs are posted throughout the various roadways guiding motorists to their respective destinations whether it be one of the parking garages or to the curbside of the terminal. Photos taken 05/01/04 & 10/13/04.

The Interstate 195 westbound beginning from the Arrivals loop of Baltimore-Washington International Airport. Interstate 195 eastbound splits into loops for arrivals (upper deck) and departures (lower deck) to the left. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Interstate 195 westbound departs the Departures loop of the Baltimore-Washington International Airport terminal. The authorized vehicles ramps link directly with Elm Road north to junction Maryland 170 (Aviation Boulevard). Photo taken 10/10/04.
The first Interstate 195 eastbound shields posted at the merge of the Arrival and Departure loops from BWI Airport. Photo taken 10/10/04.
A second Interstate 195 westbound shield resides at the Elm Road ramp onto the freeway north of the terminal departure point. Through traffic is directed onto the left-hand two lanes for Interstate 95, Maryland 170, and Maryland 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway). Photo taken 10/10/04.
Interstate 195 eastbound at the return ramp to the terminal and additional parking for BWI Airport. Rental car traffic and those bound for the mass transit facilities along Maryland 995 (Amtrak Way) are directed to Exit 1 (Maryland 170 south). Photo taken 10/10/04.
Nearing the Exit 1 six-ramp partial-cloverleaf interchange with Maryland 170 (Aviation Boulevard) on Interstate 195 east. Maryland 170 composes one leg of the Aviation Loop around BWI Airport. Use Maryland 170 south for the Maryland 100 freeway and Maryland 170 north to Maryland 162 (Aviation Boulevard continuation) south for Interstate 97 to Glen Burnie and Annapolis. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Traffic to Maryland 170 (Aviation Boulevard) leaves Interstate 195 westbound at Exit 1. Interstate 97 travels just east of BWI Airport between Interstates 695 & 895 at Ferndale southward to Interstate 595 & U.S. 50-301 at Annapolis. Use Interstate 97 south to U.S. 50 east & 301 north for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Photo taken 10/10/04.
The next interchange is that of the Exit 2A/B junction with Maryland 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway). Maryland 295 provides an alternative to Interstate 95 between Baltimore and Washington via the four-lane Baltimore-Washington Parkway. Maintained by the National Park Service further south, the parkway is devoid of trucks due to restrictions to commercial traffic. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Exit 2A departs ahead for Maryland 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway) northbound to Lansdowne and Baltimore. Use Maryland 295 north for Interstate 695 east to Glen Burnie, the Francis Scott Key Bridge, and Essex. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Drawing closer to the Exit 2A ramp departure for Maryland 295 northbound. Maryland 295 provides connections to Interstate 895 north for the Harbor Tunnel and Interstate 95 north for downtown and the Fort McHenry Tunnel. The Baltimore-Washington Parkway ends at the Maryland 295 interchange with Interstate 95 as Russell Street. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Interstate 195 westbound at Maryland 295 north (Exit 2A). Traffic to Interstates 70, 83, and 95 is directed northward to the Exits 4A/B interchange with Interstate 95. Use Interstate 95 north from there to Interstate 695 north / inner for Interstate 70 west to Frederick or Interstate 83 north to York, Pennsylvania. Photo taken 10/10/04.
A loop ramp carries drivers from Interstate 195 westbound onto Maryland 295 (Baltimore-Washington Parkway) southbound. Use Maryland 295 south for Jessup, Laurel, and the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The panel to the left features the final three interchanges of Interstate 195 west. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Interstate 195 travels two miles north from junction Maryland 295 to Interstate 95 near Arbutus. A second guide sign advises motorists to use Interstate 95 north to Interstate 695 for the Interstate 70 and Interstate 83 corridors. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Exit 3 joins U.S. 1 (Washington Boulevard) with Interstate 195 via the partial-cloverleaf interchange in one half mile. U.S. 1 parallels Interstate 95 and Maryland 295 north from College Park and Laurel to Elkridge at Interstate 195. The federal highway splits with Washington Boulevard at U.S. 1 Alternate for Southwestern Boulevard northbound one mile to the east of Exit 3. Photo taken 10/10/04.
A pair of viaducts cross over the Patapsco River into Baltimore County on Interstate 195. Beyond the river is the Interstate 895 under crossing ahead of Exit 3. There is no direct access to Interstate 895 from Interstate 195. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Motorists bound for U.S. 1 (Washington Boulevard) depart Interstate 195 westbound via the Exit 3 off-ramp. U.S. 1 follows Southwestern Boulevard north from Washington Boulevard to Wilkens Avenue east. U.S. 1 Alternate continues Washington Boulevard northeast to Caton Avenue and then turns north to reunite with its parent. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Interstate 195 passes over Francis Avenue at the Exit 4A off-ramp onto Interstate 95 northbound. Interstate 95 next interchanges with Interstate 695 (Baltimore Beltway) before the freeway enters the city limits of Baltimore. Downtown Baltimore lies just six miles to the east. Photo taken 10/10/04.
An end shield for Interstate 195 is posted before the Exit 4B loop ramp departs for Interstate 95 southbound. While the designation appears to end here, the freeway continues another 1.5 mile northwest to the University of Maryland at Baltimore and Arbutus. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Exit 4B loops onto Interstate 95 southbound for Laurel, Scaggsville, and Washington, D.C. Interstate 195 westbound defaults onto Maryland 166 (Rolling Road) at the freeway's north end. The state highway designation however used to apply to the freeway between Rolling Road and U.S. 1. Known then as Metropolitan Boulevard, the freeway spur joined a second freeway spur from Maryland 295 east to BWI Airport (Maryland 46) to form Interstate 195 in the mid 1980s. Photo taken 10/10/04.
The next exit along westbound Interstate 195 after Interstate 95 is Exit 5A, an access ramp to the University of Maryland at Baltimore County. The university fits snugly between the western terminus of Interstate 195 and the Baltimore Beltway (Interstate 695). Photo taken 10/10/04.
Interstate 195 approaches its western terminus as the freeway splits: Exit 5A to the university; Exit 5B to Maryland 166/Rolling Road; and Exit 5C to the Park and Ride that rests in the median of the freeway where it ends. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Westbound Interstate 195 reaches the gore point for Exit 5A to the university. Note that the exit is not numbered. Selford Road passes over the freeway between Maryland 166 (Rolling Road) and Sulphur Spring Road nearby. A partial "Y" interchange serves the UMBC campus otherwise. Photo taken 10/10/04.
The left two lanes prepare to exit into the Park and Ride and transit station in the median, while the right lane heads continues Maryland 166 north onto Rolling Road toward Catonsville. Note the Maryland 166 reassurance shield posted ahead of the sign bridge. Photos taken 10/10/04.

Maryland 166 heads south along Rolling Road to Arbutus and north along Rolling Road to Catonsville. Photo taken 06/07/04.
These Maryland 166 shields mark the western (northern?) terminus of Interstate 195 midway between Arbutus and Catonsville. There may have been plans to extend this freeway further northwest at one time, but there appear to be no current plans for any extension of the freeway. Photo taken 06/07/04.
Scenes pertaining to Interstate 195
The construction of the Interstate 195 freeway (original Maryland 166 / Metropolitan Boulevard) displaced Rolling Road between the University of Maryland at Baltimore County campus southward to the community of Relay along the Patapsco River. Maryland 166 follows Rolling Road southward from Catonsville to junction Interstate 195 one mile north of Interstate 95. The state highway ends at the freeway and Rolling Road continues south to Selford Road and a dead end near the Interstate 95 & 195 interchange. Selford Road continues across both Interstates 195 and 95 to junction U.S. 1 (Washington Boulevard) to the southeast at Relay. Sulphur Spring Road intersects Selford Road just east of the I-195 under crossing. Pictured here are trailblazers for Interstate 195 & Maryland 166 at the Rolling Road intersection with Selford Road just south of the half-diamond interchange of Metropolitan Boulevard. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Rolling Road northbound curves toward the junction with Maryland 166 north and Interstate 195 south. Maryland 166 constitutes 2.71 miles of Rolling Road between Interstate 195 and junction Maryland 144 (Frederick Road) at Catonsville. Photo taken 10/10/04.
The eastbound on-ramp to Interstate 195 for Interstate 95 and Baltimore-Washington Airport departs Rolling Road northbound. The half-diamond interchange between the two roadways includes a park and ride facility within the Interstate 195 ramps to/from Maryland 166 (Rolling Road). Photo taken 10/10/04.
Maryland 166 emerges on Rolling Road northbound at the Interstate 195 eastbound off-ramp. Interstate 195 ends five miles to the south at the Baltimore-Washington International Airport Terminal. Maryland 166 (Rolling Road) continues a short distance to the west end of Maryland 372 (Wilkens Avenue) and to the community of Bloomsbury. Photo taken 10/10/04.
