Interstate 195

Interstate 195 North
After the Virginia 195/Downtown Expressway toll plaza, the freeway changes into Interstate 195 north (as evidenced by these "BEGIN Interstate 195" shields at the Meadow Street overpass), and Interstate 195 approaches Exit 1A, Junction Virginia 161/Boulevard, three-tenths of a mile. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Virginia 161/Boulevard is a major north-south corridor through the western fringes of downtown Richmond. It heads south through Maymont Park and over the tolled Boulevard Bridge before reaching the James River Park and becoming Westover Hills Boulevard. Virginia 161 north follows the Boulevard north the Virginia Museum of Fine Art, the Virginia Historical Society, Monument Boulevard (former Virginia 418), the Arthur Ashe Center, and the Greybound Bus Station. Photo taken 06/01/04.
The second exit along northbound Interstate 195 is Exit 1B, Junction Virginia 146 west to Virginia 76/Powhite Parkway south. The Powhite Parkway is a tolled facility that crosses the James River and provides a bypass route to U.S. 60 and U.S. 360 westbound as well as Virginia 150/Chippenham Parkway and Virginia 288/Southwest Bypass. Virginia 146 is merely the link from northbound Interstate 195 to westbound Virginia 76/Powhite Parkway. Photo taken 06/01/04.
In addition to Virginia 146, the left lanes also exit to the University of Richmond Stadium as well as Rosewood Avenue and Forest Hill Avenue via Exit 1B. The following exit (Exit 1C) connects to Virginia 147/Cary Street. Photo taken 06/01/04.
The two left lanes exit only onto Virginia 146 southwest to Virginia 76/Powhite Parkway, while the two right lanes continue north along Interstate 195 to Virginia 147, Virginia 6, U.S. 33-250, and Interstate 64-95. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Note the use of "BEGIN Virginia 146" shields at the beginning of the ramp onto Virginia 146. These are the only signs that refer to the Virginia 146 designation. Photo taken 06/01/04.
The next exit along northbound is Exit 1C, Junction Virginia 147/Cary Street to Floyd Avenue. Use Virginia 147 east to reach downtown Richmond via Cary Street and west to reach the Huguenot Bridge over the James River and a connection to Virginia 150 and Huguenot Road. Photo taken 06/01/04.

Northbound Interstate 195 reaches Exit 1C, Junction Virginia 147/Cary Street to Floyd Avenue. Floyd Avenue parallels Cary Street east into downtown. Photo taken 06/01/04.
The next exit along northbound is Exit 2A, Junction Virginia 6/Patterson Avenue west and Virginia 6/Kensington Avenue east. Virginia 6 reaches its eastern terminus at Virginia 161/Boulevard, well before reaching downtown Richmond. Virginia 6 west parallels the James River toward Goochland. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Northbound Interstate 195 reaches Exit 2A, Junction Virginia 6/Patterson Avenue west and Virginia 6/Kensington Avenue east. A mileage sign provides the distance to the following three exits: U.S. 33-250/Broad Street, Virginia 197/Laburnum Avenue, and Interstate 64-95. Photo taken 06/01/04.
A light rail system is located in the median of this stretch of Interstate 195, as traffic departs the freeway onto Virginia 6/Patterson Avenue/Kensington Avenue. The right lane ends here. Photo taken 06/01/04.
The next exit along northbound is Exit 2B, Junction U.S. 33-250/Broad Street, three-quarters of a mile. Photo taken 06/01/04.
From this exit, U.S. 33-250/Broad Street head northwest into the suburbs of Henrico County, while U.S. 33-250/Broad Street head southeast into downtown Richmond. U.S. 250 splits from U.S. 33 at the intersection of Broad Street and the Hancock Street/Harrison Street couplet. At that point, U.S. 33 downgrades into Virginia 33, and follows Leigh Street to depart the city. U.S. 250 passes by the state capital and Interstate 95 before reaching its end at U.S. 60 (intersection of Broad Street and 21st Street). Photo taken 06/01/04.
Northbound Interstate 195 reaches Exit 2B, Junction U.S. 33-250/Broad Street at this ramp. The freeway continues north as it approaches Virginia 197 and Interstates 64-95. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Interstate 195 northbound at the Hamilton Street on-ramp. The final three off-ramps of the freeway are found at Interstate 64-95 and Virginia 197 (Laburnum Avenue). Laburnum Avenue begins at Interstate 195 and ends at Osborne Turnpike, creating an arc around the Richmond central business district. Photo taken 06/02/03.
Before reaching the Virginia 197/Laburnum Avenue exit, these signs announce the pending interchange with Interstate 64 and Interstate 95. Photo taken 06/01/04.
Six lanes of Interstate 195 exist at the Exit 3A three-quarter diamond interchange with Laburnum Avenue (Exit 3A). Virginia 197 travels north-south along Malvern Avenue, Westwood Avenue, and Saunders Avenue parallel to Interstate 195 from Virginia 147 (Cary Street) to Laburnum Avenue. The state highway turns eastward along Laburnum to U.S. 360 (Mechanicsville Turnpike). Photo taken 06/02/03.
A tri-level stack interchange facilitates the movements between Interstate 195 and 64 west of the adjacent Interstate 64-95 overlap begin. The mainline defaults onto Interstate 64 westbound (Exit 3B) as one lane continues northeast to Interstate 64 east and Interstate 95 (Exit 3C). Photo taken 06/02/03.
The partition of traffic between Interstate 95 northbound for Washington and Interstate 64 east and Interstate 95 south into downtown Richmond. Two lanes are allocated for the northbound trek out of the city. Interstate 64-95 share a three-mile overlap between Exit 187 and Exit 190. Photo taken 06/02/03.
Gore point sign for Interstate 64 east and Interstate 95 south as seen from northbound Interstate 195. The overlapped Interstates used to see a mainline toll plaza for the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike along the three mile overlap. With tolls removed in 1992, the plaza was removed. Two mainline interchanges exist along the overlap: Exit 78 (Virginia 166) and Exit 76 (U.S. 1-301). Traffic to the left passed underneath the travel lanes of Interstate 64 and 95 before merging onto northbound from the right. Photo taken 06/02/03.
Interstate 195 South
The first southbound off-ramp of Interstate 195 departs to Hamilton Street (Exit 2). The folded diamond interchange resides just north of the U.S. 33-250 overlap of Broad Street. Interstate 195 maintains six lanes between Virginia 76 (Powhite Parkway) and Interstate 64-95. Photo taken 10/14/01.
Interstate 195 southbound reaches Virginia 6 (Patterson Avenue overpass). Departing ahead is the Exit 1B off-ramp to Cameron Street for Virginia 147 (Cary Street) and Grove Avenue. Virginia 147 splits between Main Street (eastbound) and Cary Street (westbound) through the downtown area of the city. Grove Avenue passes over Interstate 195 at the Cameron Street off-ramp. Floyd Avenue and Hamilton Street provide access to Grove Avenue from Exit 1A. Photo taken 10/14/01.
Nearing the split of Interstate 195 southbound with Virginia 76 (Powhite Parkway). The Powhite Parkway links downtown Richmond with the southwestern suburbs and the Virginia 288 beltway as a tolled limited access highway. Passenger vehicles are levied a 50 cent toll on the section between Interstate 195 and Virginia 150 (Chippenham Parkway). The segment includes the James River crossing of Virginia 76. Photo taken 10/14/01.
Interstate 195 branches to the southeast of the Powhite Parkway to merge with Virginia 195 (Downtown Expressway). Between Virginia 76 and the Interstate end is the Exit 0 off-ramp for Rosewood Avenue and the University of Richmond Stadium.
