Interstate 295 North Charles City Road through the Interstate 295 interchange with Virginia 895 (Pocahontas Parkway) 2.25 miles south of the junction with Interstate 64 & U.S. 60 (Williamsburg Road). Traffic to the airport is directed via U.S. 60 westbound (Williamsburg Road) from Exit 28. An extension of Airport Drive is under construction to from U.S. 60 to Virginia 895. Interstate 295 expands to six overall lanes east of the capital city of Richmond (pop. 197,790). The Exit 28 junction with Interstate 64 provides the departure point for motorists wishing to travel eastward to the vacation destinations of Williamsburg (pop. 11,998) and Virginia Beach (pop. 425,257). One-half mile south of the Exit 28 collector/distributor roadway split from Interstate 295 northbound. Attached to the La France Road overpass is a pull-through panel for Interstate 295 northbound with the Interstate 64 westbound control cities of Charlottesville (pop. 45,049) and Staunton (pop. 23,853). The Exit 28 collector/distributor roadway serves the U.S. 60 (Williamsburg Road) and Interstate 64 full cloverleaf interchanges. The individual ramps are not assigned suffixes of Exit 28 however. Virginia 156 joins U.S. 60 at Bottoms Bridge two miles to the east. Virginia 33 continues beyond Bottoms Bridge along U.S. 60 to New Kent Highway and Interstate 64 Exit 205. Williamsburg Road travels through Seven Pines and Sandston to the north of Richmond International Airport. Virginia 33 westbound turns northward along Nine Mile Road at Seven Pines to Fair Oaks and Highland Springs (pop. 15,137). Like all of the exits before, Exit 49 consists of a full-cloverleaf interchange with U.S. 33 (Staples Mill Road). U.S. 33 begins in Richmond and heads northwest 709 miles to Dunlap, Indiana. Replaced overheads for the directional-cloverleaf interchange with Interstate 64 (Exits 53A/B), posted one half mile out from the freeway end. Construction between 2006 and May 2009 resulted in a new two-lane flyover from Interstate 64 east to Interstate 295 south. Photos taken 06/17/05 & 05/31/09. All traffic continues to be shunted to the right ahead of the ramps to Interstate 64. Originally Interstate 295 was to connect with the southwest bypass of Richmond (Virginia 288). Plans later shifted to a new alignment further west, resulting in the abandonment of the freeway stubs at Interstate 64/295. The southbound stub was removed during the flyover project of 2006-09.
