Interstate 370 East
Sam Eig Highway eastbound at Fields Road and the transition into Interstate 370. Washingtonian Boulevard represents the first exit of the freeway as it serves the Rio Center and Washingtonian Center in Gaithersburg. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Interstate 370 commences and travels through the mid to late 1990s constructed diamond interchange with Washingtonian Boulevard. The freeway quickly encounters Interstate 270 as it curves eastward. Photo taken 09/25/04.
A pair of lanes depart ahead for Interstate 270 southbound for Rockville, Bethesda, Silverspring, Washington, and Northern Virginia. Interstate 270 carries up to 12 lanes on the drive southward to the Capital Beltway (Interstate 495). Photo taken 09/25/04.
Interstate 370 eastbound at the cloverleaf ramp onto Interstate 270 northbound for the city of Frederick, Hagerstown, and other points north and west. The loop ramp here is the only non-directional ramp within the Interstate 270 and 370 junction. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Eastbound at the Interstate 270 northbound ramp gore point. Interstate 270 ends at the confluence of Interstate 70 and U.S. 15 & 40 23 miles to the northwest at Frederick. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Interstate 370 eastbound expands to four lanes with the on-ramps from Interstate 270 as it passes under Industrial Drive. A pair of ramps depart ahead for Maryland 355 (Frederick Road) and Shady Grove Road eastbound. Maryland 355 constitutes the former routing of U.S. 240 between Frederick and Washington, D.C. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Maryland 355 (Frederick Road) northbound travels into downtown Gaithersburg and the historic district just beyond its interchange with Interstate 370. Photo taken 09/25/04.
The right-hand lane departs for the Shady Grove Road eastbound off-ramp. Shady Grove Road comprises a busy surface arterial between Maryland 28 (Key Stone Avenue) and Interstate 270 northeast to Maryland 355 (Frederick Road) and the Midcounty Highway at Redland. Photo taken 09/25/04.

A directional ramp claims the third eastbound lane for Maryland 355 (Frederick Road) and downtown Gaithersburg. Interstate 370 crosses over Frederick Road below as the directional ramp departs and merges with the westbound off-ramp to Maryland 355. 1.5 miles separate Interstate 370 from Maryland 117 (Diamond Avenue) via Frederick Road. Photo taken 09/25/04.
An end advisory sign for Interstate 370 resides just past the Maryland 355 northbound off-rmap for the freeway's end at the Shady Grove Metro Station. The end however will soon extend much further east at Interstate 95 when the six-lane Inner County Connector toll road opens. Context photo taken 09/25/04; close-up photo taken 01/02/01.
The lone Interstate 370 eastbound reassurance shield is posted near the Oakmont Avenue underpass between Maryland 355 and Shady Grove Road. All Maryland Interstate highways double as snow emergency routes. Therefore in almost all cases reassurance shields are accompanied by these snow route signs. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Interstate 370 crosses over the MARC Brunswick Line & CSX Railroad tracks one half mile west of the Shady Grove Road partial-cloverleaf interchange. Shady Grove Road travels less than one mile east of Maryland 355 to interchange with Interstate 370. Photo taken 09/25/04.
A pair of ramps serve Shady Grove Road east and westbound from Interstate 370 east. Shady Grove Road westbound returns to intersect Frederick Road and the rest of Gaithersburg. Interstate 370 eastbound curves southward to end at the Shady Grove Metro Station from Shady Grove Road. A cloverleaf ramp carries motorists onto Shady Grove Road eastbound for Redland and Maryland 115 (Muncaster Mill Road) & Airpark Road. Photo taken 09/25/04.
An end shield is posted for Interstate 370 at the ramp merge from Shady Grove Road. The four-lane freeway reduces speed as it enters the Shady Grove Station of the Washington Metro transit system ahead. Contextual photo taken 09/25/04, detail photo taken 01/02/01.
Interstate 370 motorists are provided with three options on what to do when entering the Shady Grove Metro Station parking area. The Kiss & Ride lot to the left is for drivers dropping off passengers for the Metro trains and short term parking. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Lots 1 and 2 provide daytime parking for commuters traveling into Washington. Both roadways loop back out onto Interstate 370 westbound. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Interstate 370 West
Leaving the Shady Grove Metro Station on Interstate 370 westbound. The interchange with Shady Grove Road quickly faces drivers. There are no exit numbers at present on Interstate 370. Unlike the eastbound direction which receives two ramps onto Shady Grove Road, all movements onto the surface street are handled by a single ramp. Redland lies to the east and Maryland 355 (Frederick Road) to the west. Photo taken 09/25/04.
There is no direct access from Interstate 370 west onto Maryland 355 (Frederick Road) southbound. Therefore motorists bound for Frederick Road should use Shady Grove Road westbound for its intersection with Maryland 355 0.75 miles to the west. Photo taken 09/25/04.
A one-piece assembly of Interstate 370 west to Interstate 270 represents the first westbound shield of the 3.13-mile long freeway. Shady Grove Road passes over the freeway in the distance. Photo taken 09/25/04.
The 0.75-mile overhead for Maryland 355 (Frederick Road) northbound into downtown Gaithersburg resides at the Shady Grove Road interchange. Frederick Road travels 1.5 miles north to intersect Maryland 117 (Diamond Avenue) at the Gaithersburg Town Center. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Interstate 370 curves northwest toward the Maryland 355 (Frederick Road) interchange. Maryland 355 represents the original U.S. 240 alignment through Gaithersburg and beyond. U.S. 240 intially followed Interstate 270 once the freeway was completed. But the redundancy in the numbering led to officials decommissioning the federal highway. Photo taken 09/25/04.
The only Interstate 370 Maryland mainline shield is posted at the Oakmont Avenue underpass ahead of the Maryland 355 junction. The state-name shield is the only known to exist for Interstate 370. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Maryland 355 (Frederick Road) northbound motorists depart Interstate 370 for downtown Gaithersburg and Washington Grove. The westbound off-ramp combines with the eastbound ramp before turning onto Frederick Road. Photo taken 09/25/04.
A third lane joins Interstate 370 westbound with the advent of Maryland 355 (Frederick Road) northbound traffic. The first set of signs for the impending junction with Interstate 270 are posted here. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Interstate 370 again curves to the northwest at the Industrial Drive over crossing one-quarter mile from the directional-cloverleaf interchange with Interstate 270. The northbound off-ramp for Frederick, Hagerstown, and Gettysburg departs first. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Interstate 370 westbound transitions into the unnumbered Sam Eig Highway beyond Interstate 270. Ramps for Interstate 270 north and south depart in quickly as Interstate 370 passes above the Interstate 270 mainline. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Attached to the Interstate 270 northbound to Interstate 370 westbound flyover is the end sign for Interstate 370. Traffic to Interstate 270 southbound for Washington D.C., Rockville, and Northern Virginia departs from the left. The right-hand panel indicates the freeway end at Fields Road but does not acknowledge the mid to late 1990s completed Washingtonian Boulevard diamond interchange. Photo taken 09/25/04.
The Interstate 270 southbound directional ramp sinks below the eastbound Interstate 370 travel lanes to combine with the eastbound off-ramp. Interstate 270 southbound interchanges with Shady Grove Road and Maryland 28 (Montgomery Avenue) as it leaves Interstate 370. Photo taken 09/25/04.
Interstate 370 approaches the Washingtonian Boulevard off-ramp west of Interstate 270. Washingtonian Boulevard parallels Interstate 270 and Fields Road between Interstate 370 and Omega Drive adjacent to the Shady Grove Road interchange of Interstate 270. The divided highway was built to serve the Rio Center and Washingtonian Center in Gaithersburg. Photo taken 09/25/04.
The freeway draws to a close at the Fields Road intersection west of the Washingtonian Boulevard overpass. The Sam Eig Highway quickly encounters signals at both Fields Road and Diamondback Drive ahead. Otherwise the divided highway ends in 0.75 miles at the Great Seneca Highway. Photo taken 09/25/04.
