Interstate 395 North
The first interchange of Interstate 395 northbound constitutes a three-quarter cloverleaf with Edsall Road (Virginia State Secondary 648). Virginia State Secondary 648 follows an east-west arterial between Backlick Road (Virginia SSR 617) and Van Dorn Street (Virginia 401). Photo taken 06/02/03.
Interstate 395 northbound reaches the Exit 2B loop ramp to Edsall Road westbound. One of the features of Interstate 395 is reversible high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes. These lanes are located within the median of the main travel lanes on the Virginia side of the Potomac River. These carry two lanes of traffic, with ramps to each interchange. The reversible HOV lanes on Interstate 395 and Interstate 95 in Northern Virginia are "HOV-3," which means they require vehicles to have three occupants during morning (6:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.) and afternoon (3:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.) commuting hours. Motorcycles, alternative fuel vehicles and emergency vehicles are exempt from the HOV restrictions.1Interstate 395 overall is a six-lane freeway with a reversible HOV-3 facility carrying two additional lanes. Glebe Road travels between U.S. 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway) in Alexandria northward to the Chain Bridge crossing of the Potomac River into western Washington, D.C. Virginia 27 (Washington Boulevard) ties into Interstate 395 at the Exit 8A/B directional interchange. Washington Boulevard loops around Arlington National Cemetary between U.S. 50 (Arlington Boulevard) and the confluence of the George Washington Memorial Parkway and Memorial Drive. The second sign bridge for the Virginia 27 interchange breaks down the Washington Boulevard connections a bit further. Exit 8A turns traffic onto Virginia 27 northbound to Virginia 244 and U.S. 50. Interstate 395 northbound loses a through lane to Exit 8B for Virginia 27 (Washington Boulevard) eastbound. Crossing the highway above is the Virginia 27 & Interstate 395 southbound off-ramp to Arlington Ridge Road. For traffic utilizing Exit 8B, a full cloverleaf interchange lies just north of Interstate 395 with Columbia Pike and Rotary Road for Arlington National Cemetery and The Pentagon respectively. A two-lane off-ramp carries Exit 8C away from Interstate 395 northbound (now orientated east-west). The Exit 8C ramp descends onto the intersection of Army Navy Drive with that of the southbound beginning of Hayes Street. Hayes Street continues five blocks to U.S. 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway) at the Crystal City Shops. A slip ramp is provided for motorists wishing to access the HOV-3 roadway of Interstate 395 northbound within the Virginia 110 & U.S. 1 interchange complex. Exit 9A/B carries traffic from Interstate 395 southbound to Virginia 110 north and U.S. 1 south. There is no Exit 9 in the northbound direction. Photo taken 06/02/03.

The interchange between Interstate 395, Virginia 402 (Quaker Lane), and Shirlington Road features a traffic circle to handle all of the ramp movements and the Quaker Lane transition into Shirlington Road.
