Interstate 395 South
Interstate 395 & U.S. 1 pass over George Washington Memorial Parkway and enter a cloverleaf interchange with Boundary Channel Drive. Boundary Channel Drive stems north from Clark Street to Virginia 27 (Washington Boulevard) and the north parking area for The Pentagon. The corridor south to Washington National Airport was proposed as Interstate 595 in the 1970s. U.S. 1 otherwise transitions into a surface arterial from Crystal City south into Alexandria. Exit 7 partitions into two ramps after departing Interstate 395 south. The right-hand ramp meets Virginia 120 (Glebe Road) while the left-hand ramp continues along side the freeway to Shirlington. Now within Exit 6, drivers on the adjacent c/d roadway merge with Interstate 395 south or join the traffic circle for Quaker Lane south. Although not signed from Interstate 395 guide signs, Quaker Lane carries the designation of Virginia 402 southward from the City of Alexandria line to Virginia 7 (King Street) and 420 (Seminary Road). A directional ramp shuttles HOV-3 roadway motorists to the right-hand side of Interstate 395 south ahead of Exit 2 with Virginia Secondary 648 (Edsall Road). All traffic bound for the Capital Beltway or Virginia Secondary 644 (Franconia Road) east to Franconia must depart here. Interstate 395 south expands to five overall lanes in anticipation of the Springfield Interchange. The original directional-cloverleaf interchange between the two freeways was dramatically expanded between 1999-2007. High speed ramps and flyovers now shuttle drivers in all directions. Interstate 395 South - Old Springfield Interchange configuration
Exit 1C consisted of a two-lane directional ramp to Interstate 495 north from Interstate 395 south before the final interchange upgrade. Interstate 495 is now undergoing its own major reconstruction in the form of a HOT-lane project to expand the beltway to 12-overall lanes. Work began in 2008 and is scheduled for completion in 2013. A lowly loop ramp (Exit 1B) facilitated the movements onto Interstates 95 & 495 north from Interstate 395 south originally. Interstates 95 & 495 also underwent a major upgrade from the Eisenhower Avenue Connector east to Oxon Hill, Maryland in association with the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Replacement Project. The freeway now splits into local and thru lanes with 12 overall lanes across the Potomac River. Photos taken 08/01/05.
