Interstate 695 / Baltimore Beltway, Inner Loop Exits 16 to 32

Interstate 695 is split into six pages:

Interstate 695 Inner Loop
The Exit 17 off-ramp for Security Boulevard (Maryland 122) departs from within the symmetrical stack interchange with Interstate 70 (Exit 16). Maryland 122 comprises a surface arterial between Rolling Road and junction Interstate 70 at Woodlawn. The upcoming exits panel to the left is the first indication of the south end of Interstate 795 at Exit 19. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Views of the flyover ramps associated with the Interstate 70 stack interchange of Exit 16. The high-speed interchange was built to accommodate traffic interests to and from downtown Baltimore via Interstate 70 and Interstate 170. However since those were unbuilt the interchange is vastly under utilized due to low traffic counts between Interstate 695 and the Interstate 70 Park & Ride lot at Security Boulevard. The top level was to carry six lanes of Interstate 70. Instead only one lane is striped per direction for the defunct freeway to Interstate 95. Photo taken 10/10/04.
A six-ramp partial-cloverleaf interchange facilitates the movements between Interstate 695 (Baltimore Beltway) and Maryland 122 (Security Boulevard) at Exit 17. Flyover ramps to/from Interstate 70 join the beltway overhead the on and off-ramps to Security Boulevard. Use the Security Bouevard loop ramp onto Maryland 122 westbound for the Security Square Mall. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Mileage sign posted on Interstate 695 north / inner for Towson (junction Interstate 83) and York, Pennsylvania (Interstate 83 north from the Baltimore Beltway). Photo taken 10/10/04.
The next beltway interchange serves Maryland 26 (Liberty Road) at Exits 18A/B. Maryland 26 spurs northwest from the city of Baltimore to Randallstown, Harrisonville, and Eldersburg. Pictured here is a rather small guide sign one mile south of the cloverleaf interchange at the Windsor Mill Road overpass. Photo taken 10/10/04.

Exit 18A leaves Interstate 695 north / inner for Maryland 26 (Liberty Road) eastbound to Woodmoor and Lochearn. Maryland 26 enters the city of Baltimore as Liberty Heights Avenue at the Howard Park and West Arlington neighborhoods within two miles. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Button copy overhead at the Exit 18B loop ramp onto Maryland 26 (Liberty Road) westbound. Maryland 26 serves the western suburbs between Rockdale and Wards Chapel near the Liberty Reservoir and Patapsco Valley State Park. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Traffic merge onto Interstate 695 north / inner forms the exit-only lane for Exit 19 (Interstate 795 north). Interstate 795 (Northwest Expressway) spurs northwest from the Baltimore Beltway to the suburbs of Owing Mills and Reisterstown in western Baltimore County. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Interstate 695 inner expands to five lanes in anticipation of the Exit 19 directional interchange with Interstate 795. The Northwest Expressway parallels the Maryland 140 (Reisterstown Road) corridor between Pikesville and Reisterstown for traffic interests northwest to Westminster. Maryland 140 represents the historic U.S. 140 corridor between Baltimore and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Northbound Interstate 695 at Exit 19, Junction Interstate 795 north. The freeway was built in three stages between 1984 and 1987; it was designated as Interstate 795 in 1986. From here, Interstate 695 turns northeast and then east toward Towson, the omnipresent control city for Interstate 695. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Old Court Road passes over Interstate 695 at the northbound beginning of Interstate 795 (Exit 19). Maryland 140 interchanges with the Baltimore Beltway in one mile at Exit 20. The Northwest Expressway was slated to continue southeast into the city of Baltimore to Wasbash Avenue. That portion of the freeway however was cancelled in the late 1970s. See the Wabash Avenue guide for coverage of that route. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Interstate 795 southbound travelers merge onto Interstate 695 east / inner ahead of the Exit 20 single point urban interchange (SPUI) with Maryland 140 (Reisterstown Road). The previous diamond interchange with Reisterstown Road was upgraded to a SPUI in the early 2000s. Photo taken 10/10/04.
The Baltimore Beltway expands to eight overall lanes as it travels the Pikesville and Towson areas north of the city. Maryland 140 (Reisterstown Road) serves the community of Pikesville south of Exit 20 and Garrison and Owing Mills northwest of Interstate 695. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Interstate 695 east / inner at the Exit 20 ramp departure for Maryland 140 (Reisterstown Road). Reisterstown Road enters the city of Baltimore two miles to the southeast. There the state highway bisects the Fallstaff and Mount Hope neighborhoods en route to Druid Hill Park. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Interstate 695 northbound reassurance shield with inner loop placard posted within the Exit 20 interchange. Photo taken 10/10/04.
0.75-mile overhead for junction Maryland 126 (Park Heights Avenue) on Interstate 695 east / inner. The north-south state highway travels north from the Woodberry and Pimlico sections of Baltimore to Pikesville and junction Interstate 695. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Maryland 126 (Park Heights Avenue) continues north from Interstate 695 to Worthington and Garrison Forest road. A split-diamond interchange serves Park Heights Avenue and nearby Stevenson Road from the Baltimore Beltway at Exit 21. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Exit 21 leaves Interstate 695 east / inner for Maryland 126 (Park Heights Avenue). Stevenson Road also travels north-south on an alignment parallel to Maryland 126 between Pikesville and Stevenson (junction Maryland 130 / Greenspring Valley Road). Photo taken 10/10/04.
Auxiliary guide sign advising motorists destined for downtown Baltimore and Camden Yards to use Interstate 83 southbound. Interstate 83 follows the Jones Falls Expressway southward from Interstate 695 (Exit 23) to the Inner Harbor and Fells Point area of central Baltimore. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Upcoming exits sign for Greenspring Avenue (Exit 22), Interstate 83 (Exit 23), and Maryland 25 (via Jones Falls Expressway) on Interstate 695 east / inner. Interstate 83 & Maryland 25 meet the Baltimore Beltway at the same interchange. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Greenspring Avenue intersects Interstate 695 at the Exit 22 partial-cloverleaf interchange north of the city. A truck restriction is in place for the surface highway south of the Baltimore city line. Otherwise Greenspring Avenue leads south to Pimlico Avemue and the Pimlico Race Track at Northern Parkway. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Exit 22 departs Interstate 695 east / inner via a loop ramp to Greenspring Avenue. Greenspring Avenue ventures 2.2 miles north from Exit 22 to junction Maryland 130 (Greenspring Valley Road) on the drive to Cronhardt and Worthington. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Drawing to within one mile of the three-quarter cloverleaf interchange with Interstate 83 & Maryalnd 25 (Jones Falls Expressway) on Interstate 695 east / inner. Interstate 83 ties into the freeway from downtown Baltimore via the Jones Falls Expressway northbound. Maryland 25 ties into the north end of the Jones Falls Expressway at the intersection of Falls and Joppa Roads. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Auxiliary overhead touting the attractions of the Baltimore Inner Harbor and Baltimore Zoo for Exit 23A (Interstate 83 south). Interstate 83 provides a direct link to the central business district at its southern terminus via Fayette and President Streets. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Interstate 695 reduces to six lanes briefly as it passes over the Jones Falls Expressway at Exit 23. Exit 23A departs for Interstate 83 southbound ahead. The Jones Falls Expressway passes by the Coldspring, Woodberry, Charles Village, and Bolton Hill neighborhoods within Baltimore city. Use Interstate 83 southbound for Druid Hill Park as well. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Maryland 25 (Falls Road) passes over the Baltimore Beltway ahead of the Exit 23A ramp departure for Interstate 83 south. Maryland 25 parallels the Jones Falls Expressway closely between U.S. 1 & 40 Truck (North Avenue) and Brooklandville to the north of Interstate 695. Photo taken 10/10/04.
The Exit 23A gore point includes an Interstate 83 shield. This style of signing is typical for a freeway to freeway junction within the state of Maryland. Photo taken 10/10/04.
The cloverleaf ramp for Maryland 25 (Falls Road) departs Interstate 695 east / inner at Exit 23B. The Jones Falls Expressway continues one half mile north to its end at junction Maryland 25 (Falls Road) and Joppa Road. Maryland 25 continues north from there along Falls Road to junction Maryland 130 (Greenspring Valley Road) west and Maryland 131 (Seminary Avenue) east. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Interstate 83 & 695 share pavement between the Exit 23 and 24 interchanges. The overlap is officially signed with reassurance markers after the Interstate 83 on-ramp from the Jones Falls Expressway onto Interstate 695 inner. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Five lanes of Interstate 83 north & 695 east / inner prepare to split at the Exit 24 directional interchange at Seminary Park. Interstate 83 constitutes the right-hand two lanes of the Beltway for its northward departure to Tomonium, Cockeysville, and York, Pennsylvania. Photo taken 10/13/04.
This Interstate 695 Inner Loop reassurance shield omits Interstate 83. Sound walls are in place all along the northern reaches of the Baltimore Beltway. These barriers were installed in the late 1990s in conjunction with a widening project. Photo taken 10/13/04.
The second to last sign bridge for the Exit 24 split with Interstate 83 north on Interstate 695 east / inner. Interstate 83 serves the growing northern suburbs of Baltimore County through to the Pennsylvania state line. The freeway was built in the 1950s as part of the U.S. 111 corridor between Baltimore and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Photo taken 10/13/04.
Interstate 83 north parts ways with Interstate 695 east / inner at Exit 24. Exit 16 of Interstate 83 north serves nearby Timonium. Use Exits 18 and 20 for to Maryland 45 (York Road) for the community of Cockeysville. The freeway reaches the city of York in 37 miles and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 65 miles. Photo taken 06/01/03.
The next exit along the inner loop is Exit 25, Junction Maryland 139/Charles Street, one mile. Maryland 139 (Charles Street) provides a surface arterial southward from Interstate 695 to Maryland 134 (Bellona Avenue) outside of the Baltimore city line. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Inner loop/eastbound Interstate 695 at Exit 25, Junction Maryland 139/Charles Street. Maryland 139 follows Charles Street south into downtown Baltimore. Photo taken 06/01/03.
The next exit along the inner loop is Exit 26A, Junction Maryland 45/York Road, which heads south to Towson and north parallel to Interstate 83 toward the Pennsylvania State Line. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Maryland 45/York Road is the original alignment for decommissioned U.S. 111, which used to provide the main route from Baltimore north to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, via York. The highway was replaced by Interstate 83. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Inner Loop Interstate 695 at Exit 26B, Junction Maryland 45/York Road north to Lutherville. The next exit along the inner loop is Exit 27, Junction Maryland 126, Dulaney Valley Road. Photo taken 06/01/03.
A second overhead sign indicates the gore point for Exit 26A, Junction Maryland 45/York Road (former U.S. 111) northbound. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Eastbound/Inner Loop Interstate 695 next approaches Exit 27A, Junction Maryland 146/Dulaney Valley Road south to Towson and Exit 27B, Junction Maryland 146 north to Loch Raven Reservoir and Jacksonville. Photo taken 06/01/03.
The next exit along the inner loop is Exit 27B, junction Maryland 146/Dulaney Valley Road north to Loch Raven Reservoir. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Continuing its progress through one of the more populated areas along the beltway, Interstate 695 next approaches Exit 28, Providence Road. The mileage sign in turn lists the distance to the following three exits: Exit 29A, Cromwell Bridge Road; Exit 29B, Junction Maryland 542/Loch Raven Boulevard south; and Exit 30, Junction Maryland 41/Perring Parkway. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Since the inner loop of Interstate 695 is beginning to angle southeast after passing Exit 28, several of the Interstate 695 shields omit the directional banner (i.e., north, south, east, west) and instead have a sign indicating "Inner Loop." Photo taken 06/01/03.
Eastbound/Inner Loop Interstate 695 at Exit 28, Providence Road. Providence Road heads north to Loch Raven Reservoir and south into Towson. Photo taken 06/01/03.
The next exit along the inner loop of Interstate 695 is Exit 29A, Cromwell Bridge Road. Cromwell Bridge Road angles northeast toward Gunpowder Falls State Park. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Following Cromwell Bridge Road, the next exit is Exit 29B, Junction Maryland 452/Loch Raven Boulevard. Despite the name, Loch Raven Boulevard does not continue north of the beltway and thus does not serve Loch Raven Reservoir. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Interstate 695 Maryland is squeezed into this smaller, two-digit sized shield along southeastbound near Exit 30. Photo taken 06/17/00.
Maryland 41/Perring Parkway, the next exit, is the next pair of exits along the inner loop. A relatively short state route, Maryland 41 connects Interstate 695 in the north with Maryland 147/Harford Road in Baltimore. Maryland 41 has a cutoff ramp connecting southbound with westbound Northern Parkway. The parkway continues south into the city as Perring Parkway then changes to Hillen Road near Chinquapin Run Park. Photo taken 06/01/03.
The interchange between Interstate 695 and Maryland 41 is a cloverleaf; the first exit (Exit 30A) is for southbound Maryland 41/Perring Parkway. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Although Exit 30B is labeled as northbound Maryland 41 north, the state route ends just north of the interchange, at the intersection with East Joppa Road. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Another Interstate 695 Maryland small-scale shield is posted immediately after Exit 30; it is identical to the shield seen prior to Exit 31 along the inner loop. Photo taken 06/17/00.
The next three exits are Exit 31A, Junction Maryland 147/Harford Road south into Parkville and Baltimore; Exit 31B, Junction Maryland 147/Harford Road north to Carney, Cub Hill, Gunpowder Falls State Park, and Harford County; and Exit 31C, Junction Maryland 43/White Marsh Boulevard east to White Marsh (Junction Interstate 95 and U.S. 40). For through traffic to northbound U.S. 1, a better connection can be made via Exit 31C/Maryland 43 west rather than Exit 32B. Photo taken 06/01/03.
This interchange with Exits 31A-B/Junction Maryland 147 is a cloverleaf, but traffic for Exit 31C/Maryland 43 east must use the left lane to prepare for a left exit from the beltway. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Inner Loop Interstate 695 at Exit 31B, Junction Maryland 147/Harford Road. Harford Road/Maryland 147 head southwest into the city, terminating both Maryland 41/Hillen Road and Maryland 542/The Alameda before reaching its own southern terminus at U.S. 1 at East North Avenue. Photo taken 06/01/03.
The three center lanes continue east along the inner loop of Interstate 695, while the left lanes become exit only for Maryland 43 and the right lane prepares to exit only for U.S. 1/Bel Air Road. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Transcontinental U.S. 1, connecting the cities of the East Coast, passes through the city of Baltimore via Bel Air Road south to East North Avenue, then west to the Monroe/Fulton couplet west of downtown. The next exit (Exit 32A) along the inner loop serves southbound U.S. 1. Photo taken 06/01/03.
Another cloverleaf interchange, Interstate 695 meets U.S. 1. The first ramp (Exit 32A) serves southbound U.S. 1, while the second ramp leads to northbound U.S. 1. (For through traffic on northbound U.S. 1, a better connection can be made via Exit 31C/Maryland 43 west). Photo taken 06/01/03.
U.S. 1 also heads north from Baltimore, choosing to remain further inland as compared to Interstate 95 or U.S. 40. Serving the communities of Perry Hall, Bel Air, and Hickory, U.S. 1 bypasses the First State of Delaware but loops northeast into Philadelphia. Photo taken 06/01/03.
