Maryland 2

Maryland 2 constitutes a main thoroughfare between Solomons Island and the city of Baltimore in central Maryland. Most of the 80.56 mile highway comprises a four-lane divided highway. The state highway serves interests between the capital city of Annapolis and Glen Burnie, a large suburb of Baltimore, via the Governor Ritchie Highway.

Maryland 2 North
Maryland 2 constitutes six overall lanes on the Ritchie Highway through north Glen Burnie. Pictured here is the traffic light with Orchard Road just south of the Interstate 895 Spur northbound beginning. Orchard Road from the right and Shelly Road from the left intersect Maryland 2 0.3 miles north of junction Maryland 710 (Ordnance Road). Photo taken 10/13/04.
Interstate 895 Spur northbound directs motorists from Maryland 2 (Ritchie Highway) northbound onto both Interstate 695 west / inner and Interstate 895 north (Harbor Tunnel Thruway). The spur provides a direct freeway link to the tolled Harbor Tunnel south of downtown Baltimore as well as a connection to Interstate 97 south by way of Interstate 695 west. Photo taken 10/13/04.
Maryland 2 (Governor Ritchie Highway) northbound approaches the northern terminus of Maryland 170 (Belle Grove Road) and the Baltimore city line. The state highway meets Maryland 170 at the five point intersection with Jack Street, Hanover Street, and Potee Street. Maryland 2 continues northward along the four-lane divided Potee Street from Maryland 170 to Hanover Street near junction Interstate 895 (Exit 13). Photo taken 10/10/04.
Overhead sign assembly for the Maryland 2 (Ritchie Highway) split with Hanover Street at junction Maryland 170 (Belle Grove Road) and Jack Street. Potee Street begins at the traffic light and carries Maryland 2 north one block west of Hanover Street through to the interchange with Interstate 895. Hanover Street in conjunction with Patapsco Avenue (unsigned Maryland 173) serve the Brooklyn community of south Baltimore to the east. 1st Avenue links Maryland 2 with Maryland 170 to the left. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Maryland 2 South
Maryland 2 southbound begins at the St. Paul Street intersection with U.S. 1 (North Avenue) in the city of Baltimore. The state highway constitutes the one-way couplet of St. Paul Street (south) and Calvert Street (north) into the central business district. An off-ramp serves St. Paul Street from Interstate 83 southbound, and after that merge, Maryland 2 encounters Preston Street. Alternate Interstate 95 & 395 shields direct motorists west on Preston Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The alternate route bypasses downtown and the Inner Harbor area, connecting with Interstate 395 at Camden Yards. Photo taken 08/27/05.
Many older style Maryland 2 shields remain in use along St. Paul Street southbound and in Baltimore in general. Pictured here is the southbound reassurance marker posted ahead of the intersection with Biddle Street. Photo taken 08/27/05.

Southbound at the signalized intersection with Biddle Street. Biddle Street travels east to the Colington Square neighborhood of central Baltimore from Maryland Avenue to Broadway. Photo taken 08/27/05.
Maryland 2 (St. Paul Street) southbound next encounters Chase Street. Chase Street travels west to the Mount Vernon community. Photo taken 08/27/05.
Another older style reassurance shield lies along St. Paul Street southbound between Chase and Eager Streets. Row homes, typical of much of Baltimore, line Maryland 2 southbound through this stretch. Photo taken 08/27/05.
Eager Street provides access to the final mile of Interstate 83 southbound for Inner Harbor East and Fells Point. The final on-ramp departs Eager Street at Calvert Street (Maryland 2 north) for the freeway ahead of the Fayette and President Street terminus. Photo taken 08/27/05.
Maryland 2 approaches junction U.S. 40 (Orleans Street) beyond the intersection with Centre Street. U.S. 40 follows the Orleans Street viaduct east from St. Paul Street to Hillen Street. The Maryland 2 mainline passes under the viaduct itself along with Calvert Street and Interstate 83. To access U.S. 40, motorists must therefore merge onto a connecting roadway parallel to St. Paul Street. Photo taken 08/27/05.
Maryland 2 splits with St. Paul Street onto St. Paul Place at Centre Street. St. Paul Place passes underneath the Orleans Street viaduct to the east of the St. Paul Street intersection with U.S. 40. Centre Street meanwhile connects Monument Street with Druid Hill Avenue through the Baltimore central business district. Photo taken 08/27/05.
St. Paul Street carries two-way traffic parallel to St. Paul Place as it handles the movements between Maryland 2 and U.S. 40 (Orleans Street). U.S. 40 partitions into a one-way street couplet of its own west of Maryland 2 in the form of Franklin Street (west) and Mulberry Street (east). Photo taken 08/27/05.
South of downtown, Maryland 2 follows a concrete arch bridge with a draw span across the Middle Branch of the Patapsco River. Signed as Hanover Street, the state highway crosses the river between Cherry Hill and Interstate 95 in South Baltimore. The view depicted was taken from Broenig Park along the Patapsco River to the southeast. Photo taken 07/97.
This older-style Maryland 2 shield is located along southbound at the corner of Patapsco and Potter Streets in south Baltimore. Patapsco Avenue enters the scene from the Patapsco River crossing adjacent to Cherry Hill Park. The east-west street becomes unsigned Maryland 173 to the east en route through Brooklyn. Photo taken 10/14/01.
A second older style reassurance shield for Maryland 2 resides along Potee Street southbound after the intersection with Patapsco Avenue (Maryland 173). Potee Street carries Maryland 2 between Hanover Street and the Baltimore city line at junction Maryland 170 (Belle Grove Road). Photo taken 10/10/04.
Maryland 2 (Potee Street) intersects Maryland 170 (Belle Grove) at a five-way intersection with Hanover Street, Jack Street, and the Governor Ritchie Highway. Maryland 2 departs the city of Baltimore via the Ritchie Highway southbound to Glen Burnie. Maryland 170 turns southwest en route to Pumphrey and Linthicum. A Maryland 3 Business trailblazer is coupled with the Maryland 2 southbound marker posted after Maryland 170 for the connection in Glen Burnie with the Robert Crain Highway. Photo taken 10/10/04.
Continuing along the Governor Ritchie Highway southbound through the partial "Y" interchange with Interstate 895 Spur near Furnace Branch and Glen Burnie. Interstate 895 Spur dumps traffic onto Maryland 2 southbound ahead of the junction with Maryland 710 (Ordnance Road). Interstate 895 Spur links Maryland 2 and Interstate 97 with the Harbor Tunnel Thruway in Baltimore city. Photo taken 04/30/04.

Maryland 2 departs the greater Annapolis area for rural environs in southern Anne Arundel County. The state highway reduces to two lanes south of Maryland 214 near Londontown. Pictured here is the approach to junction Maryland 255 (Owensville Road) on Maryland 2 (Solomons Island Road) southbound. Photo taken 09/25/04.
