Maryland 4

Maryland 4 provides a major north-south corridor through south central Maryland. The state highway continues Pennsylvania Avenue east from Washington, D.C. through the suburbs of Suitland and Meadows. The highway upgrades to a freeway bypass of Upper Marlboro and Bristol before turning southward into Calvert County. Maryland 4 maintains its four-lane identity with Maryland 2 from Sunderland south to the Patuxent River near Solomons. The state highway ends at Maryland 5 near Leonardtown, 64.85 miles south of its north end at D.C.

The landscape remains rural between Chaneyville and Sunderland. However develop continues to encroach on much of south-central Maryland with the expansion of the Washington metropolitan area. Maryland 231 intersects Maryland 2 & 4 (Solomons Island Road) at Prince Frederick. The state highway follows Church Street west from Main Street (Maryland 765) to Solomons Island Road.
