Maryland 7 / Old U.S. 40

Maryland 7 constitutes the original routing for U.S. 40 through Cecil, Harford, and eastern Baltimore Counties. In all cases, Maryland 7 closely parallels the current four-lane U.S. 40 (Pulaski Highway) through the downtown areas of cities and towns in Northeast Maryland. In Cecil County there are three segments of Maryland 7 in existence. The first travels south of U.S. 40 between the Susquehanna River, Perryville, and Principio Furnace. The second segment travels southward toward Charlestown and into North East below U.S. 40. Segments three serves portions of Elkton to the north of U.S. 40 including Main Street and Delaware Avenue. These segments officially are given lettered prefixes.

Segment Western Terminus Eastern Terminus Road Names Mileage
7B Veterans Hospital east of Perryville Broad Street, Principio Furnace Road 3.56
7C west of Charlestown west of Elkton Old Philadelphia Road, Cecil Avenue 9.73
7D west Elkton east Elkton Main Street, Delaware Avenue, Howard Street, Jeffers Street 2.51

Maryland 7 (Principio Furnace Road) ties into U.S. 40 at the intersection of Belvidere Road from the north. Maryland 7 Segment C begins in 0.40 miles. Photo taken 07/25/04.
A short distance beyond the west end of Maryland 7 Segment C (Old Philadelphia Road) is the eastern conclusion of Maryland 7 Segment B (Principio Furnace Road). Principio Furnace Road sinks southwesterly to Principio Furnace, junction Maryland 327, and downtown Perryville. Photo taken 05/01/04.

Just west of the Jeffers Street terminus of Maryland 7 Segment B is the AMTRAK Northeast Corridor underpass of U.S. 40 (Pulaski Highway). A guide sign resides in the median of the Pulaski Highway for the forthcoming intersection with the west end of Maryland 279 (Elkton Road) and east end of Maryland 7 Segment C (Old Philadelphia Road). Photo taken 07/31/04.
Maryland 279 (Elkton Road) is the preferred route to Interstate 95 for all Elkton based traffic interests. The state route exists almost wholly as a four-lane facility between Maryland 213 (Bridge Street) and Interstate 95 (Exit 109). Maryland 7 parallels U.S. 40 along Old Philadelphia Road into the heart of North East to the left. Photo taken 07/31/04.
Maryland 279 westbound concludes across from the beginning of Maryland 7 Segment C (Old Philadelphia Road). U.S. 40 travels eastward toward downtown Elkton to the left and to North East and Perryville to the west. It is unclear why an Interstate 95 sign is posted here as Elkton Road interchanged with the freeway 3.5 miles to the northeast. Photo taken 12/19/01.
