The state highway represents the original routing of U.S. 140 between Baltimore and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. However U.S. 140 followed Maryland 140 northwest from Baltimore to Westminster, and Maryland 97 / Pennsylvania 97 northwest into Adams County, Pennsylvania. Maryland 140 meanwhile continues west from Westminster to Taneytown and junction U.S. 15 at Emmitsburg. U.S. 140 was decommissioned in 1980 since it fell under the AASHTO criteria of "less than 500 miles". Interests to Maryland 30 (Hanover Pike) northbound should use Butler Road north to bypass Reisterstown ahead.
